the force. He is taking over as
the jail administrator for Yankton
County.
President Barack Obama held
a historic meeting with Cuban
President Raul Castro yesterday
in Havana, Cuba. The President
was hoping to help end more
than a half century of hostility
to the Cuban people and their

Ag Center is seeking state approval of NorthWestern Energy
for its new grain handling facility northwest of Yankton. At the
present time NorthWestern Energy and Bon Homme-Yankton
Electric territories overlap at the
Napa Junction site.

USD Women’s Coach Amy Williams has been named the new
head women’s basketball coach
at the University of Nebraska.
Williams is a University of Nebraska alumnus and a former
Husker women’s basketball player and graduate assistant coach.

Vermillion Alumnus Lt. Col. William A. Schroeder, a 1995
graduate of Vermillion High
School and the commander of
the 342nd Training Squadron at
the 37th Training Wing at Lackland, Air Force Base in Texas,
was murdered in a shooting by
a disgruntled student last week
on the base.

Doris Roberts, who played the
meddling mother on “Everybody
Loves Raymond, died yesterday
at the age of 90.

Two educators and a journalist will enter the Yankton High
School Fine Arts Hall of Fame
during an induction ceremony
Tuesday. Paul Harens, Cindy
Uken and Kathleen West. Paul
Harens moved to Yankton in
1980. Harens became involved
in fine arts with Debate and Oral
Interpretation. Harens has been
married to Kathy (Weniger) Harens for 42 years. They have two
children and two grandchildren.
Cindy Uken is currently digital
managing editor for Townsquaremedia Billings. Townsquaremedia specializes in creating
local, original content. Prior to
this, Uken was the health care
reporter at the Billings Gazette,
Montana’s largest newspaper,
where she was employed from
September 2010 to December
2014. Kathleen West has long
been a champion of the arts,
not only in the Yankton School
District but also in the Yankton
community. West began working
in the Yankton school system in
1979 as a first-grade teacher.
She later moved to the fourthgrade level before becoming an
elementary school principal in
1989, holding that position until
she retired in 2003. Kathleen is
married to Norman West.

Layne Somsen, a Yankton and
South Dakota State grad, was
called up by the Cincinnati Reds
on Monday. He joined the National League Central club as
it opened a three-game series
with a 5-3 loss to the New York
Mets. Somsen did not pitch in
the contest
Music legend Prince, whose real
name was Roger Nelson, passed
away Thursday at the Paisley
Park studios in Chanhassen,
Minn., reportedly after battling
an unspecified illness since April
15. He is best known for his hits
“Purple Rain,” “1999” and “Little
Red Corvette.” He has sold more
than 100 million copies of his
records which also earned him
Grammys and an Academy
Award.

Dawn Plitzuweit was announced
Friday as the new University of
South Dakota women’s basketball coach. She has spent the
last four seasons as head coach
at Northern Kentucky, and before that was an assistant coach
for five seasons at Michigan.
While head coach at Grand Valley State in Michigan, she captured a NCAA Division II national
championship in 2006. She
takes over at USD for Amy Williams, who is leaving to become
head coach at the University of
Nebraska.
Outdoors artist Terry Redlin
dies after battle with dementia.
He died Sunday night, April 24,
2016, of complications from a
nine-year struggle with dementia
in a care center in the Watertown
area. He was 78. The family of
outdoors artist Terry Redlin says
a public viewing will be held Friday at the Watertown art center
that bears his name. Redlin is
known for his paintings of wildlife and outdoors scenes. In the
1990s he was named America’s
most popular artist in annual
gallery surveys conducted by
U.S. Art magazine.

Colette Abbott, the wife of University of South Dakota President James Abbott, died suddenly Wednesday at the couple’s
residence in Vermillion. She was
59. Officials said Colette Abbott
had recently been diagnosed
with cancer and was awaiting surgery. The former Colette
Pugh grew up in Pierre, attended
USD and married James Abbott
in 1987. They have three adult
daughters and two grandchildren.

The Yankton City Commission
appointed Commissioner Charlie Gross the mayor. Charlie has
held the position of mayor four
times in the past. Incumbent
Amy Miner and newcomer Tony
Maibaum were also sworn into
office.
May 13
Beadle Elementary music
teacher, Lea Ann Schramm, and
Yankton School District (YSD)
orchestra teacher, Kim Evander,
are retiring at the end of the
2015-16 school year. Both
are the last Yankton College
(YC) alumni to work in the YSD.
Evander and Schramm attended
the YC Conservatory of Music
from 1972-1976. Evander has
been the YSD orchestra teacher
for the last 10 years while Schramm, who is currently teaching
music in Beadle and Stewart elementary schools, has been an
YSD teacher for 27 years.

Morley Safer, of CBS news died
today in Manhattan. He was 84.
Safer was in declining health
when he announced his retirement last week; he was a huge
presence on 60 Minutes for 46
years,

UCLA police chief says two
people were killed on campus
yesterday; one of them may
have been the gunman. About
two hours after the first 911
call came in around 10 a.m.,
with the center of campus still
saturated with officers, and on
lockdown Los Angeles Police
Chief Charlie Beck said it was
a murder-suicide and declared
the threat over. Two men were
dead in an engineering building
office, and authorities found a
gun and what might be a suicide
note, he said.

Muhamad Ali died at the age of
74 yesterday after a three decade battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was a three time world
heavyweight boxing champion.

The Yankton Gazelles won the
South Dakota State Class AA
Girls’ Golf Tournament in Mitchell. It was the first girls golf title
in Yankton High School history.

On Sunday, Yankton’s Dakota
Territorial Museum will have
an 80th anniversary celebration from 11 am-3 pm. According to museum director Crystal
(Mensch) Nelson, the museum
was started in 1936 by the
Daughters of the American
Revolution (DAR), who salvaged
the original museum known as
the Territorial Counsel building.
After it stopped being used for
legislation, it had been used as
a grain bin. The Yankton County
Historical Society will celebrate
their 55th anniversary this year
as well.
June 13
Amanda Jackson and her cadaver dog “Chief” were recently certified and serve as an additional
asset for the Yankton County
Search and Rescue Association.
In addition, the Labrador holds
the distinction as Yankton County’s first cadaver dog,
Authorities have started to name
the victims of the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando,
Fla., that left at least 49 victims
and the shooter dead, and 53
people injured. The massacre
happened on Latin night at the
Pulse nightclub in the heart of
Orlando yesterday. Florida Governor Rick Scott said many of
the victims were from Puerto
Rico. A Florida security guard
named Omar Mateen was the
attacker.

Renner 6-3 in the championship
game Sunday afternoon at the
Lewis & Clark Wooden Bat Classic at Bob Tereshinski Stadium

The parents of a Nebraska toddler killed by an alligator at
Walt Disney World say they’re
devastated by the loss of their
son, Lane Graves. An alligator
grabbed 2-year-old Lane Graves
from shallow water in a lake at a
Disney hotel Tuesday. The beach,
located at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa across a
lake from the Magic Kingdom,
had “no swimming” signs but
no warning about alligators. The
company said it will now add gator warnings.
