January 31, 2017 • Page 14 Prosecutors charged a white Oklahoma police officer with first-degree manslaughter yesterday less than a week after she killed an unarmed black man on a city street and just days after police released graphic videos, saying in court documents the officer “reacted unreasonably.” Tulsa officer Betty Shelby fatally shot 40-year-old Terence Crutcher on September 16. The affidavit filed with the charge says Shelby “reacted unreasonably by escalating the situation from a confrontation with Mr. Crutcher, who was not responding to verbal commands and was walking away from her with his hands held up, becoming emotionally involved to the point that she over reacted.” Beth Kaltsulas a math teacher at Yankton Middle School was honored as the 2017 South Dakota Teacher of the Year. She has been with the Yankton School District for 30 years. She will now represent South Dakota at the national competition in December. Nikki Heinz was recently named the SHAPE SD Elementary Teacher of the Year, an award that recognizes the best physical education teacher in the state. Heinz who is the PE Teacher for both Beadle and Webster elementary students has been at the two schools for 22 years. October 15 Pro Football Hall of Famers Frank Gifford died at 84. He led the New York Giants to a league championship in 1956 and later teamed up with Howard Cosell and Don Meredith in the “Monday Night Football booth. Police in Des Moines, Iowa, and Urbandale, Iowa, are shocked by the death of two of their officers. They were both fatally shot while they were in their patrol cars. September 26 Golfing legend Arnold Palmer, who helped turn the sport from a country club pursuit to one that became accessible to the masses, died yesterday at the age of 87 from heart complications. He was a seven time major winner. October 24 Mount Marty College (MMC) is continuing its year of progress by doing something not many colleges in the country have done — making archery a collegiate sport program. Last week, MMC President Dr. Marc Long announced that the college will partner with the National Field Archery Association (NFAA) and the U.S. Collegiate Archery Association to make this happen. MMC will be one of the first colleges to offer archery as a collegiate sport in the Midwest. November 29 Grant Tinker was an American television executive who served as Chairman and CEO of NBC from 1981-1986. He was the co-founder of MTM Enterprises and a television producer of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and other television hits in the 1970s and transformed NBC. He died yesterday at the age of 90. November 30 Yankton High School is adding a cluster of agriculture-based classes and will also be adding an FFA (Future Farmers of America) chapter starting in the 2017-2018 school year. YHS instructor Brandon Wagner is getting his Ag certification. One person was killed and two others injured in a two-vehicle crash early Monday afternoon east of Yankton. The male driver of the van later died as a result of his injuries. The occupants of the other vehicle each suffered serious non-life threatening injuries. The male passenger was later airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital. December 5 One person was killed and another person injured in a onevehicle weekend crash north of Yankton, according to the Department of Public Safety (DPS). The accident occurred just before 3 a.m. Sunday, 10 miles north of Yankton and just east of U.S. Highway 81. A 2008 Dodge Charger was eastbound on 300th Avenue when it went into the north ditch and rolled several times. Both occupants were transferred to a Yankton hospital. One male, age 35, died as a result of his injuries. The other occupant, a 30-year-old male, sustained serious, non-life threatening injuries. A shooting occurred at 10:21 p.m. Dec. 3 in the 600 block of Green St. following a vehicle pursuit initiated by the South Dakota Highway Patrol. After the pursuit terminated, the incident escalated and resulted in a trooper firing his weapon and wounding the suspect. The Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) of the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office is investigating the incident. Curtis Wayne Adams Sr., 58, Yankton, was arrested. December 8 Casey’s Convenience store on 4th Street was robbed at gunpoint. The robber got away with an undetermined amount of cash. December 9 Less than 24 hours after a convenience store in Yankton was robbed, a suspect is in custody. Yankton police said Zachery Edward King Conner, 23, was arrested yesterday in connection with an armed robbery at the Casey’s General Store on Fourth St. Wednesday night. Yankton Police Department (YPD) chief Brian Paulsen told the Press & Dakotan that Conner was apprehended at 4:24 p.m. Thursday in the 500 block of Green St. thanks to a tip from the public. for attempted murder in the first-degree, aggravated assault against law enforcement and aggravated eluding law enforcement following his release from Avera Sacred Heart Hospital. December 17 President Obama put Russia’s Vladimir Putin on notice yesterday that the United States could use offensive cyber muscle to retaliate for Russia’s interference in the U.S. Presidential election. Many believe that Putin knew about the email hacking that happened in the presidential race. December 19 A winter storm that brought in bitter Arctic air broke many records across the Upper Plains this past weekend, it snapped a record that had stood in Yankton for more than 130 years. Yankton officially recorded -27 degrees yesterday. December 20 After nearly five months on the run a Sioux City, Iowa, man has been captured in Arizona for allegedly hitting and injuring a Tyndall policeman with his vehicle. Travis McPeek, 35, was arrested this past weekend in Phoenix, Ariz. He is accused of running his vehicle into Tyndall policeman, Kelly Young, during an August 6 traffic stop. Tonya Olson has been named the new head of the Yankton Community Library; she will replace Kathy Wibbels, who has held the position for the last eight years. December 21 Yankton’s Social Security Office is moving to their new location on 1818 Broadway, the new office provides more security and privacy for both employees and clients. Yankton County Commissioners voted unanimously to give all county employees a 2 percent raise after initially rejecting it in July. The Islamic State is claiming responsibility for yesterday’s attack on a Berlin, Germany Christmas market. A stolen truck was driven through the market, killing 12 people and injuring at least 45. German forces are still hunting for the person or persons responsible. A massive fireworks blast in Tultepec, Mexico, killed at least 26 people and injured many more. A market that was best known for their fireworks celebration. The blast leveled the market and some nearby homes were also damaged. December 22 Yankton eighth grader Matthew Mors set a record tying 41 points at the Yankton High School Boys basketball game last night. Yankton hosted Sioux Falls Washington. Washington claimed a 68-65 victory. He tied the record set by Chad Nelson set in 1974. December 23 Longtime Yankton physician, Dr. Brooks Ranney died yesterday at the age of 101. He helped establish the now Yankton Medical Clinic. He was a local pioneer in obstetrics, gynecology and prenatal care. He was also an author, city commissioner and mayor. He and his wife Vi were named Yankton Citizens of the Year in 2012. December 26 George Michael, an English singer, songwriter and record producer who rose to fame with the musical group Wham, died yesterday at the age of 53 from heart failure. He went on to a successful solo career in his 1987 debut album “Faith” that sold more than 25 million copies worldwide. Former Senator and astronaut John Glenn died at the age of 95. He was the first American to orbit the earth in 1962. He returned to space in 1998 aboard a Space Shuttle flight. He is the last survivor of the original Mercury 7 astronauts. He served 24 years in the Senate from Ohio. December 27 A Christmas storm brought ice and rain across the upper plains. The storm brought a blizzard to the western and northern parts of South Dakota. An ice storm plunged the central and northeastern portion of the state into darkness. Winds gusts were reported up to 72 miles per hour in Yankton. The wind caused power outages, damaged building and even uprooted trees. The South Dakota Rural Electric Association reported they had roughly 16,400 customers without power. December 12 Alan Thicke, best known for his role as the beloved Dad on the TV sitcom “ Growing Pains,” died yesterday at the age of 69. He also composed the theme songs for the game show, “Wheel of Fortune” and sitcoms “Diff’rent Strokes” and “The Facts Of Life.” December 28 Carrie Fisher, “Star Wars” Princess Leia, dies at 60. She suffered a cardiac event on a flight from London to Los Angeles on December 23; she was the daughter of screen legend Debbie Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher. December 15 The suspect in an officerinvolved shooting that took place on December 3 has been charged with attempted murder in the first-degree.
