January 7, he was 82. He served

southeast South Dakota and
northeast Nebraska. He was
also an accomplished musician
who performed benefit concerts for Catholic churches and
schools. Lange was known as a
compassionate priest but was
also an accomplished musician.
He taught piano students, and
he performed benefit concerts
which each raised $25,000 —
or more — for Catholic parishes
and schools.

Susan Jacobs retired last week
as associate warden at Mike
Durfee State Prison (MDSP) in
Springfield, with additional duties at the Yankton Community
Work Center (formerly trustee
unit). She has held numerous
positions during her 26 years
with the South Dakota Department of Corrections (DOC), the
last 11 years as associate warden.
The landscape of Mount Marty
College athletics is about to look
quite a bit different. A Fieldhouse
and Cimpl Arena upgrades are
part of future plans, President
Marc Long told the Yankton
Quarterback Club Wednesday.
Mount Marty hopes to make an
announcement later this spring
detailing a “major gift” that
would support a fieldhouse, the
president told the crowd.

Today is the 25th anniversary
of the start of the 1991 Persian
Gulf War. The Persian Gulf War,
a U.S.-led effort to oust Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi forces from
Kuwait. Kuwait was liberated on
February 27, 1991.
Glen Frey, a Rock ‘n Roll rebel
who co-founded the Eagles with
Don Henley died yesterday at
the age of 67. Some of the Eagles’s famous hits include “Hotel
California” and “Life in the Fast
Lane”.

The suspect in an officer involved shooting last September has been sentenced to 25
years in the South Dakota State
Penitentiary on two charges of
aggravated assault against law
enforcement and one charge of
aggravated assault. Trae Angel
agreed to a plea deal in December.

Abe Vigoda known for playing
Phil Fish in the 1970s hit TV series “Barney Miller” died yesterday at the age of 94.

Crofton, Neb., head coach Aaron
Losing notches his 300th career
coaching win over previously
unbeaten Pierce, Neb.. He now
boasts a career win of 300-41.
The majority of those win coming
from his career with Crofton High
School.

Dr. Brooks Ranney of Yankton
will be celebrating his 100th
birthday on January 31. Ranney
came to Yankton after serving in
World War II he joined the Yankton Clinic in 1948. His specialty
was OB/GYN and he delivered
many babies throughout his career.
February 3
A Groundhog Day storm dumped
at least 10 inches of snow on
Yankton and larger amounts on
much of southeast South Dakota and northeast Nebraska.
Wind gusts were reported to be
46 mph creating a powerful blizzard, which brought the area to
a standstill.
Maurice White, founder of Earth,
Wind & Fire, whose band sold
more than 90 million albums
died yesterday at the age of 74.

Kirsti Skuza of Sioux Falls and
Luke Loecker of O’Neill, Neb.,
were crowned Lady and Lord
Marben during the Mount Marty
College Homecoming coronation
last night at Marian Auditorium.

The Denver Broncos defeated
the Carolina Panthers in Super
Bowl 50 Sunday at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., 24-10.
Von Miller led the Broncos with
a record tying seven sacks and
forced four turnovers. Quarterback Peyton Manning threw for
just 141 yards and committed
two turnovers in what could have
been his last game.

A second chance prom will be
held February 14 at Minerva’s
in Yankton all proceeds from the
event will go to the Ability Building Services Foundation. ABS is
a private not-for-profit community agency that provides prevocational activities, vocational
training, residential training and
other supports and services by
people with developmental disabilities in the Yankton area.

Father Valerian Odermman is the
new chaplain at Mount Marty
College. He is a native of North
Dakota, replacing Father Thomas
Wordekemper.
The Missouri National Recreational River preps for the National Park Service’s Centennial
celebration. The year-long celebration culminates on August 25
with the Founder’s Day program
at Riverside Park in Yankton
featuring musicians, artists and
presentations.

of the United States Supreme
Court, died yesterday at the age
of 79.

Powerful winds swept across
the area yesterday. Winds gusting up to 60 mph brought down
trees, damaged structures and
snapped power lines across the
area causing power outages in
some places.
Harper Lee, novelist, whose view
of racial injustice in a small
southern town, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” became a standard
reading for millions of people
and an Oscar winning film, died
yesterday at the age of 89.
March 2
South Dakota Senators voted
25-10 yesterday to increase the
state sales tax and use tax to
4.5 percent. The tax has been
4 percent since 1969. Governor Daugaard asked for the
higher tax to as part of a plan to
raise teacher’s salaries in public
schools and get South Dakota
out of last place nationally.
March 3
The Mount Marty College Women’s Basketball team will face
Purdue-Calumet in the opening
round of the NAIA Division II
Women’s Basketball Tournament
in Sioux City, Iowa. This is their
first tourney appearance in five
years.
Governor Dennis Daugaard vetoed a bill this week that would
have required transgender students to use bathrooms and
locker rooms that match their
sex at birth.
March 8

Plains Ag grain sorting facility at
Napa Junction.

Former First Lady Nancy Reagan’s funeral procession begins today in Simi Valley, Calif.
The police motorcade will take
her body to the Ronald Reagan
Presidential Library to be buried next to her husband, former
President Ronald Reagan. Mrs.
Reagan died Sunday at the age
of 94.
