black man, was shot and killed
by officers of the Baton Rouge

black man by the Baton Rouge,
La., police after a video of the
encounter, aired repeatedly on
television and social media,

After a 43-year career with the
South Dakota Department of
Transportation (DOT), retired
Yankton area engineer Ron Peterson will be honored with an
induction into the South Dakota
Transportation Hall of Honor. According to the DOT, the Transportation Hall of Honor was created
to recognize those people who
made a lasting impact on the
state’s transportation systems.
Philander Castile, 32, was shot
last night by a police officer in
suburban St. Paul, Minn., in the
second fatal encounter between
police and an African-American
man to gain national attention
this week. Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, began streaming video live on Facebook immediately after the officer fired.
In the stream she said Castile
was stopped for a broken taillight, had notified the officer
that he was licensed to carry a
handgun and was reaching for
his wallet at the officer’s request
when he was shot.
July 8
Micah Xavier Johnson ambushed
Kopetsky’s
and shot a group of people in
Dallas, Texas, killing five police
officers and injuring nine others. Two civilians were also hurt.
Johnson was an Army Reserve
Afghan War veteran who was reportedly angry over police shootings of black men and stated he
wanted to kill white people, especially white police officers. The
shooting happened at the end
of a peaceful Black Lives Matter
organized protest against police
killings of Alton Sterling in Baton
Rouge, La., and Philando Castile
in Falcon Heights, Minn., which
had occurred in the preceding
days. Following the shooting,
Johnson fled inside a building
on the campus of El Centro College. Police followed him there,
and a standoff ensued. In the
early hours of July 8, police
killed Johnson with a bomb
attached to a remote control
bomb disposal robot. It was the
first time U. S. law enforcement
used a robot to kill a suspect.
The shooting was the deadliest
incident for U.S. law enforcement since 9/11.

A large truck plowed through
revelers gathered for Bastille Day
fireworks in Nice, France, killing
at least 84 people and sending
others fleeing after the driver
drove for more than a mile along
the Riviera, the city’s famed waterfront promenade. The driver

Steven “Chopper” Johnson
passed away unexpectedly Monday at age 65. He and his wife,
Marlene, were named Riverboat
Days 2014 Captain and Belle.
He was a volunteer firefighter
with the Yankton Fire Department for 36 years; he co-founded Riverboat Days and the Yankton Community Holiday Feast.

Wells Fargo Bank in downtown
Yankton was robbed late yesterday afternoon, and a suspicious
package was left at the crime
scene. Police received a 911
call at 4:55pm from the bank.
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the call.

Hillary Rodham Clinton accepted the democratic presidential
nomination for president at the
Democratic National Convention
in Philadelphia, Pa. She chose
Virginia Senator Tim Kaine as
her vice presidential running
mate. She made history as the
first female to ever be nominated for president of the United

August 8
A Tyndall police officer has been
released from the hospital after
suffering injuries this weekend
when a driver struck him with
a vehicle and fled. The search
continues for the male driver
and the White Ram 1500 truck
in the hit-and-run incident. The
truck has Iowa license plates
DYF593. Tyndall policeman Kelly
Young was investigating a driving
complaint Saturday afternoon in
the parking lot of Frank’s Trading Post, according to the Bon
Homme County sheriff’s office.
The gas station and convenience
store is located along South Dakota Highway 50 on the south
side of Tyndall.

Today is the start of the 33rd annual Riverboat Days with Jolene

The summer Olympics were held
in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. U.S.
swimmer Michael Phelps ended
his historic Olympic career with
a 23rd gold medal. Teammate
Ryan Lochte’s drunken night
got him suspended from his
sport for 10 months. He won’t
be allowed to participate in the
2017 world championship as
a result of this scandal. Three
other swimmers involved in the
episode of a robbery at a Rio
gas station –Gunnar Bentz, Jack
Conger and James Feigenmalso
face suspensions.

One month after the bank robbery at Wells Fargo Bank in
downtown Yankton authorities
still only have a few leads according to Yankton Police Chief
Brian Paulsen.
An earthquake measuring 6.2
on the Richter scale yesterday
in Pescaara Del Tronto, Italy, has
killed 250 people the search for
survivors continues along with
more aftershocks.

A Yankton County resident
has become the state’s first
West Nile virus-related death
in 2016. The individual was in
the 88-89-year-old age group
according to the South Dakota
Department of Health.
Gene Wilder, a two-time Oscar
nominee and comedy star, has
died at the age of 83 due to
complications from Alzheimer’s
disease. He appeared in many
classics “Willie Wonka & the
Chocolate Factory,” “Young Frankenstein,” and “Blazing Saddles.”

Habitat for Humanity is expanding into Clay County. They are
hoping to help solve the affordable housing problem by
expanding their services in to
Clay County. Throughout the
years, there have been numerous requests from people in Clay
County according to executive
director Julie Dykstra. They have
also moved into new offices at
218 Capital.
Kathy Wibbels, director of the
Yankton Community Library is
retiring in December. She has
worked in this position for the
last eight years.
September 7
Thomas Patterson, the missing
Briar Cliff student is presumed
drowned in the Missouri River
near Burbank. He was swimming
with friends in the river when he
disappeared on Sunday afternoon.
September 15
The royalty for Yankton High
Schools annual homecoming
festivities has been announced
for 2016. This year’s homecoming candidates include, McKenzie Schroeder, Cheyanne Crisman, Jacey Anderberg, Kelsey
Westerman, Kristen Rezac;
and Jordan Bak, Jordan Kathol,
Treyson Slate, Avery Brockberg
and Nate Stephenson. The YHS
coronation will be held Thursday,
September 22, at the YHS Gym.
September 16
Yankton High School will induct
four people into the Yankton
High School Athletic Hall of
Fame next week. Members of the
2016 class include: Bob Winter,
Bob Brimmer, Ramsey (Kavan)
Fitzsimmons and Al Letich. Bob
Winter’s success spans 47 years
in Yankton. He started as a science teacher in 1963 and retired in 2010 as the activities
director. Bob Brimmer (athlete,
class of 1967), found success
on the football, basketball, track
and baseball teams. He has
practiced general surgery for
35 years in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Ramsey (Kavan) Fitzsimmons
(athlete, class of 2005) is currently a teacher and coach in the
South Sioux City, Neb., school
district. She still holds state
track records in the 1600-meter run (4:43.5), sprint medley
relay; (4:04.7) and 3200-meter
relay; (9:01.19) at Yankton High
School. Al Letich (athlete, class
of 1925). He moved to Yankton
ahead of the 1923-24 school
year when his brother, Clem, was
hired as the Bucks head basketball coach. Al the helped guide
Yankton to a state championship
that season and then again in
1925, and was named all-state
both seasons. In those days, the
South Dakota state championship team, as well as the runnerup, then competed at a national
tournament in Chicago. The
1924 Bucks squad advanced
all the way to the championship
game of that tournament, where
they lost to a team from Windsor, Colo.
Heavy rains yesterday caused
flash flooding throughout the
area. Yankton saw a record 3.21
inches fall at WNAX Radio Station breaking a record that has
stood since 1927. Lesterville
received more than 5 inches of
rain causing some roads to be
closed.
September 17
Yankton’s Beadle Elementary
School is celebrating 90 years
of educating kids when it hosts
a 90th anniversary open house
Thursday, September 22. Beadle
School is named after General
W.H.H. Beadle, a prominent educator in the Dakota Territory and
was built in 1926 with 100 students in attendance. The school
was built on the northeast edge
of town at 1214 Mulberry.
Stewart Elementary School
the “new” elementary school
in Yankton is 50 years old, the
school was built in 1966 on the
northern edge of Yankton to address the growing needs of the
community. Current Principal
Jerome Klimisch said that what
most people in town don’t realize is that Stewart was named
after two long-time teachers and
principals who donated the land
where the school sits to the district. “Kate and Jennie Stewart
both graduated from Yankton
High School and then went on to
teach here,” Klimisch said. “Kate
was a teacher and principal at
Garfield Elementary for 43 years
(1893-1936). Her sister, Jennie,
taught for 52 years from 18921944, as well as was principal
at both the Junior High School
and Central

September marks the 10th anniversary of the return of Yankton-based Charlie (now Bravo)
Battery from Operation Iraqi
Freedom. 151 member returned
home, four did not. More than
30,000 people lined the streets
of Yankton on September 30,
2006, to welcome them home
with a massive parade.
Area people demonstrated at
the Meridian Plaza this past
weekend to join in the national
protests against the $3.7 billion
pipeline. The 1, 172 mile line
would carry more than 400,000
barrels of crude oil daily. Yankton Sioux Tribe members are
also participating in a demonstration against the pipeline on
the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe
reservation on the North DakotaSouth Dakota border.

University of South Dakota
senior Autumn Simunek was
crowned Miss South Dakota
2015 recently in Hot Springs.
She will represent South Dakota
as the Miss America pageant in
Atlantic City in September.
September 21
Police in Charlotte, N.C., yesterday fatally shot a black man
they said was armed as they
were searching for someone
else. The shooting sparked violent protests that injured more
than 12 officers after some witnesses said the victim, 43-yearold Keith Lamont Scott, was
unarmed.
