July 8 Micah Xavier Johnson ambushed Kopetsky’s and shot a group of people in Dallas, Texas, killing five police officers and injuring nine others. Two civilians were also hurt. Johnson was an Army Reserve Afghan War veteran who was reportedly angry over police shootings of black men and stated he wanted to kill white people, especially white police officers. The shooting happened at the end of a peaceful Black Lives Matter organized protest against police killings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, La., and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minn., which had occurred in the preceding days. Following the shooting, Johnson fled inside a building on the campus of El Centro College. Police followed him there, and a standoff ensued. In the early hours of July 8, police killed Johnson with a bomb attached to a remote control bomb disposal robot. It was the first time U. S. law enforcement used a robot to kill a suspect. The shooting was the deadliest incident for U.S. law enforcement since 9/11. July 27 Wells Fargo Bank in downtown Yankton was robbed late yesterday afternoon, and a suspicious package was left at the crime scene. Police received a 911 call at 4:55pm from the bank. August 8 A Tyndall police officer has been released from the hospital after suffering injuries this weekend when a driver struck him with a vehicle and fled. The search continues for the male driver and the White Ram 1500 truck in the hit-and-run incident. The truck has Iowa license plates DYF593. Tyndall policeman Kelly Young was investigating a driving complaint Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of Frank’s Trading Post, according to the Bon Homme County sheriff’s office. September 7 Thomas Patterson, the missing Briar Cliff student is presumed drowned in the Missouri River near Burbank. He was swimming with friends in the river when he disappeared on Sunday afternoon. September 15 The royalty for Yankton High Schools annual homecoming festivities has been announced for 2016. This year’s homecoming candidates include, McKenzie Schroeder, Cheyanne Crisman, Jacey Anderberg, Kelsey Westerman, Kristen Rezac; and Jordan Bak, Jordan Kathol, Treyson Slate, Avery Brockberg and Nate Stephenson. The YHS coronation will be held Thursday, September 22, at the YHS Gym. September 16 Yankton High School will induct four people into the Yankton High School Athletic Hall of Fame next week. Members of the 2016 class include: Bob Winter, Bob Brimmer, Ramsey (Kavan) Fitzsimmons and Al Letich. Bob Winter’s success spans 47 years in Yankton. He started as a science teacher in 1963 and retired in 2010 as the activities director. Bob Brimmer (athlete, class of 1967), found success on the football, basketball, track and baseball teams. He has practiced general surgery for 35 years in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Ramsey (Kavan) Fitzsimmons (athlete, class of 2005) is currently a teacher and coach in the South Sioux City, Neb., school district. She still holds state track records in the 1600-meter run (4:43.5), sprint medley relay; (4:04.7) and 3200-meter relay; (9:01.19) at Yankton High School. Al Letich (athlete, class of 1925). He moved to Yankton ahead of the 1923-24 school year when his brother, Clem, was hired as the Bucks head basketball coach. Al the helped guide Yankton to a state championship that season and then again in 1925, and was named all-state both seasons. In those days, the South Dakota state championship team, as well as the runnerup, then competed at a national tournament in Chicago. Beadle School is named after General W.H.H. Beadle, a prominent educator in the Dakota Territory and was built in 1926 with 100 students in attendance. The school was built on the northeast edge of town at 1214 Mulberry. Stewart Elementary School the “new” elementary school in Yankton is 50 years old, the school was built in 1966 on the northern edge of Yankton to address the growing needs of the community. Current Principal Jerome Klimisch said that what most people in town don’t realize is that Stewart was named after two long-time teachers and principals who donated the land where the school sits to the district. “Kate and Jennie Stewart both graduated from Yankton High School and then went on to teach here,” Klimisch said. “Kate was a teacher and principal at Garfield Elementary for 43 years (1893-1936). The shooting sparked violent protests that injured more than 12 officers after some witnesses said the victim, 43-yearold Keith Lamont Scott, was unarmed. September 23 TAvery Brockberg and Kristen Rezac were named Prince and Princess at Yankton High School’s annual Pioneer Days homecoming coronation Thursday night at the Summit Activities Center gym.
