34th annual Cribbage tourney. At
least 300 cribbage players from

The Star Brite Inn Motel will soon
become the new location for the
Yankton homeless shelter. The
shelter plans to move into the
new facility in November. The
shelter board also is starting a
fundraiser to help with expenses
of the purchase of the building
and daily operating expenses.

The Crofton girls’ cross country
team won their 10th consecutive Class D cross country title. It
was also the Lady Warriors’ 19th
state cross country title overall,
also a state record. Haley Arens
also won the individual title.

Dan Koupal, 25 of Dante and
auctioneer at Stockmen’s Livestock market I Yankton qualified
for the 1016 World Livestock
Auctioneer Championship in
Kentucky. He finished in the top
10 at a regional qualifying event
on October 16 in Saint Onge.

Mason Buhl, 16, of Canton will
be charged as an adult with attempted murder and the commission of a felony while armed
with a firearm. A judge entered a
not guilty plea on behalf of the
16 year old in court yesterday.
Buhl, is accused of shooting
and injuring the principal inside
the Harrisburg High School last
month.
Cory Heckenlaible of Utica
clinched the 2015 World Championship of Mod drag racing at
the International Hot Rod Association’s Summit Super Series
held in Memphis, Tennessee.

Fred Thompson died at the age
of 73. He was the Tennessee
lawyer, GOP presidential candidate; Watergate attorney and actor who starred on the television
show “Law and Order”.

The Kansas City Royals defeated
the New York Mets 7-2 to win the
World Series early Monday. This
is the team’s first World Series

Dakota that were affected by the
deadly bird flu virus during the
spring have restocked and are
raising birds again. The H5N2 virus wiped out 48 million turkeys
and chickens in the U.S.

A Yankton man faces four charges
of attempted murder, four counts
of aggravated assault against a
law enforcement officer, and one
count of aggravated assault after an overnight shooting hear in
Yankton. The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is
handling the investigation at the
request of the Yankton Police
Department because it was on
officer involved shooting.

Margaret Lyons, 78, of Yankton
died on Monday, November 2.
Lyons and her husband, Jack,
moved to Yankton in 1965. Jack
taught at Mount Marty College
for 33 years and Margaret at
Yankton Public Schools for more
than 25 years. When she retired
in 1999, she was teaching music
at Webster Elementary, Lincoln
Elementary and Yankton Middle
School. She also helped form
the Yankton Children’s Choir with
LeAnn Schramm in 1994. She
and Jack were also named the
Yankton 2009 Citizens of the
Year.
November 9
A life jacket station has been
erected near the boat ramp at
Yankton’s Riverside Park. The station is a result of collaboration
between Yankton County Search
& Rescue, the City of Yankton,
Yankton County Emergency Management and private businesses
in the city. The concept had support from the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers. Sapa Extrusions also
helped purchase materials for
the station itself and Kopetsky’s
Ace Hardware donated the first
life jackets. The station works on
the honor system that users will
return the life jackets after use.
November 11
The recently completed Springfield Veterans Memorial overlooking the Missouri river will
provide a new place for paying
tribute to the Bon Homme community this Veteran’s Day. The
$160,000 monument weighs
30,000 pounds and required
five years of planning and fundraising.
November 13
Yankton’s Meridian Bridge is
a setting in the new independent film “Until Forever” based
on a true story about a young
man named Michael Boyum,
from Minnesota diagnosed with
leukemia. The movie is about
Michael struggling to live, his
brother Matt is battling depression and tires to end his own life.
It’s also a love story between Michael and his childhood sweetheart, Michelle, who are seeking
answers to questions of faith, life
and love. There will be a free local screening of “Until Forever”
at Calvary Baptist Church on November 22.

After 26 years, the City of Yankton’s holiday decorations have
gotten an upgrade. The new
lights cost $33,000 which was
included in the 2015 budget.
The decorations include 60 blue
and white snowflake lights, 20
48 inch evergreen sprays, 36
20 foot garland pole wraps and
32 banners to go along with the
snowflake lights.
Yankton’s Junior Archery team
represented the United States
earlier this month at the Binational Games in Tijuana, Mexico.
The Yankton Hot Shots Junior Archery team select4ed six female
compound archers ages 12-16
to participate.

Three local brothers earned Eagle
Scout honors within two years of
each other Thomas, Morgan and
Austin Hill all of Yankton. Thomas
received his designation earlier
this month and is in the process
of planning his ceremony.
December 3
Fourteen people are dead and
more than a dozen wounded in a
San Bernadino, California mass
shooting. Two heavily armed attackers opened fire during a
luncheon banquet at a social
services center building. The
attackers escaped, setting the
region on high alert, about four
hours later a man and woman
in an SUV armed with handguns
and assault rifles, dressed in assault style clothing were killed. It
is the nation’s deadliest shooting
since 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut.
December 4
Yankton school officials and law
enforcement authorities are investigating an incident in which
two unauthorized persons were
found at Yankton High School.
An investigation is ongoing.
Ten years later the Yankton area
and members of Bravo Battery
are remembering their fallen
comrades. A display honoring
the memories of four Charlie Battery (now Bravo Battery) soldiers
who were killed during the unit’s
2005-2006 mission to Iraq can
be seen in the entry way of the
Yankton National Guard Armory.
Two of the soldiers --- Dan Cuka
and Rich Schild --- died during
a roadside bombing in Baghdad
on Dec. 4, 2005. A third, Allen
Kokesh Jr., died two months later
of injuries sustained in the attack. A fourth, Greg Wagner, was
killed the following spring.
Three people were killed in a
head-on collision on Highway
81 approximately 11 miles north
of Yankton around on Friday. According to Yankton Deputy Fire
Chief Larry Nickles, two total
vehicles were involved in the accident. Nickles said one was carrying four people while the other
was carrying two people. One
patient was flown to Sioux Falls
with unknown injuries and two
other victims were transported
to Avera Sacred Heart Hospital
with unknown injuries. The highway was shut down following the
incident. The names of the victims have not been released. The
South Dakota Highway Patrol is
investigating the incident.
December 7
Three people sustained lifethreatening injuries Saturday in
a one-vehicle accident on Old
Highway 50 east of Yankton. The
crash clipped an electrical pole,
which caused a power outage
for approximately 950 Yankton
residents. Old Highway 50 was
closed for several hours the
highway was reopened sometime Sunday morning once the
accident site was cleared. Responders had to be routed east
of the James River Bridge on new
Highway 50 and then north to
old Highway 50 as the highway,
blocked by power lines, prevented responders from reaching
the scene, said Yankton Deputy
Chief/Fire Marshal Larry Nickles.

Charlie’s Pizza House of Yankton’s spicy meatball and sauerkraut pizza is no stranger to
Food Network Magazine’s annual
“50 States, 50 Pizzas” list, having made it on the list in 2011.
It was recently announced they
made the list again this year.

The Yankton High School marching band is traveling to Orlando,
Florida this week to participate
in the Russel Athletic Bowl halftime show on December 29.
December 24
Ted Mickelson of Anderson Realty received the Lewis & Clark
Board of Realtors’ 2015 “Realtor
of the Year” award for his dedicated involvement in real estate
and the board. Mickelson joined
the real estate business on January 20, 1970. On December 31,
Mickelson will officially retire after 45 years of service.

Natalie Maria Cole died today at
the age of 65. She had struggled
with a variety of health issues in
recent years; the cause of death
was reportedly congestive heart
failure. Cole was an American
singer, songwriter, and performer.
The daughter of Nat King Cole,
Natalie rose to musical success
in the mid–1970s as an R&B
artist.
