came out yesterday and stopped
just short of calling Tom Brady,
quarterback of the New England
Patriots a cheater. The report left
little doubt that he had a role in
having footballs deflated before
New England’s AFC title game
against Indianapolis in January
and probably in previous games.
The report stated that two Patriot employees official locker
room attendant Jim McNally and
equipment assistant John Jastremski executed the plan.

teacher of the year. The senior
class of Yankton High School
voted on the award that was
sponsored by Lewis & Clark Specialty Hospital. Hejl recently retired after 21 years of teaching.

Yankton’s Evan Payer, 10, captured first place last weekend in
the Junior Mini 65cc, age’s 7-11
division at the AMSOil AMA Amateur National Arenacross Championships in Las Vegas. Payer
was raised in a motocross family.
His father, Waylon, owns Yankton

for about 30 years.

Beth Kaltsulas was named the
Yankton School District Teacher
of the Year. She teaches sixth
grade math at Yankton Middle
School. She started her teaching career in 1986 at Beadle
Elementary School. She taught
fourth, fifth, and sixth grade for
25 years before moving to YMS.
She will begin her 29th year of
teaching this fall.

The Tri-State Old Iron Association
is celebrating their 10th anniversary this weekend. As part of
their celebration there will be a
display of more than 100 tractors at the JoDean’s parking lot
in Yankton on Saturday June 6.
There will also be an indoor viewing of various items made and
collected by the club members.

Layne Somsen a Yankton native
and South Dakota state graduate is one step away from Major
League Baseball. He was called
up the Class AAA Louisville by
the Cincinnati Red’s organization
yesterday.

Local officials welcomed archers
from around the world to the
World Archery Youth Championships. Opening ceremonies were
held yesterday afternoon. More
than 500 archers from 51 countries were in attendance. There
were also performances by the
South Dakota National Guard
band, Amanda Payne of The One
Arm Bandit & Company put on a
show featuring two trained bison,
the Osni Ponca Heduska Society
Native American group also performed three songs.

The Yankton City Commission
is mulling the possibilities of
making closed sessions public
record. Spearheading the effort
with the city commission is City
Commissioner Nathan Johnson.

The Yankton School board is
seeking the public’s input on
the Crane Youngworth/ Williams
Field project. Superintendent
Dr. Wayne Kindle will be holding
community meetings to outline
the details of both plans.
June 17
The Yankton County Commission
passed a Tax Increment District #1 encompassing the land
around Napa Junction. Commission chairman Todd Woods said
this is a way of helping development in the county move forward.
The 2015 World Archery Youth
Championship has concluded
and officials said it was an overwhelming success. According to
officials there were a total of 574
archers from 51 countries that
competed.

City Finance Officer Al Viereck
who has been working in Yankton’s city government for more
than 17 years was the recipient
of the 2015 South Dakota Municipal League Finance Officer of
the Year award.
A Sioux Falls man drowned at
the Lewis & Clark Marina west
of Yankton on Tuesday night.
Richard Minder, 54, was on a
sailboat that was docked when
he fell into the water and did not
resurface.
June 19
A white man who joined a prayer
meeting inside a historic black
church and then fatally shot
nine people was captured without resistance yesterday after an
all-night manhunt. Dylan roof,
21, spent nearly an hour inside
the church before killing the six
women and three men including
the pastor.

This year’s VFW/Ladies Auxiliary
State Convention was held in
Yankton at the Kelly Inn. Senator John Thune gave the formal

Two Yankton residents were
killed in a two vehicle accident
that occurred Sunday afternoon
five miles west of Yankton on
Highway 52. Khuyen Nguyen,
52 and Ryan Nguyen, 39 were
pronounced dead at the scene
of the crash. Two occupants in
the other vehicle were injured.
Khuyen Nguyen drifted across
the center line and into the path
of an eastbound vehicle driven
by Corey Sestak. Sestak and
the passenger in his vehicle,
Katherine Sestak, 30 both of
Sioux Falls, received serious but
non-life threatening injuries. The
investigation is continuing into
the crash.
July 15
Joshua Hudson, a man accused
of murdering his uncle in Yankton
in 2014, has pleaded guilty to a
single count of first degree homicide as manslaughter. Hudson
was in court yesterday where he
accepted a guilty by reason of
insanity to charges of homicide
in the second degree, aggravated
assault and grand theft.
July 18
Jeff and Jolene Steffen and their
children Jenna and Cole were
named the Farm Family of the
Year by the Yankton Chamber
of Commerce’s Agri-Business
Committee at the Chamber’s
annual Ag Gala. The Steffens
farm southeast of Crofton in Nebraska.
August 8
The Lewis & Clark traveling exhibit which stopped in Yankton
in 2002 as part of the bicentennial commemoration of the
Lewis & Clark Expedition will be
finding a permanent home at
the Mead Building, the future
home of the Dakota Territorial
Museum in Yankton. The exhibit
was acquired in 2007 from the
American Rivers, Inc. in Washington, D.C. They wanted the exhibit
to be donated to an organization
along the Missouri River where it
could be seen. Yesterday members of the South Dakota Army
National Guard began hauling
the 20 crates from storage to the
Mead Building.

Pro Football Hall of Famers
Frank Gifford died at 84. He led
the New York Giants to a league
championship in 1956 and later
teamed up with Howard Cosell
and Don Meredith in the “Monday Night Football booth.
August 10
Two Yankton residents were injured when their small plane
crashed into a cornfield in Cedar
County, Nebraska on Saturday
night. Pilot Ronald Feimer, 56
and his son Alan, 16, were taken
to Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in
Yankton for unknown injuries.
August 11
After years of slow growth of affordable housing in Yankton,
the Westbrook Estates project
is taking shape and aiming at
addressing the city’s housing
needs. Dan Specht is the head of
Yankton Area Progressive Growth
committee. Westbrook Estates is
located along West City Limits
Road. The first phase will include
70 apartment units, 16 four-plex
lots and 28 duplex units and 29
single family homes.

The Yankton School Board was
awarded the 2015 School Board
of Excellence Award by the Associated School Boards of South
Dakota at their annual conference in Sioux Falls this past
weekend.

Yankton Madison Dangler was
crowned the 2015 Czech Days
Queen.

The Meridian Bridge RV Resort continues to take shape at
the foot of the Meridian Bridge
on the Nebraska side and the
campground is set to open to
their first guests. Work has also
begun on the walking trails to
beach area along the river and
to the bridge’s walking trail.

Yankton High School’s Broc
Mauch and Adam Walter won
third place in their division at the
National History Day competition
at the University of Maryland last
week. Their project was titled
“Leadership and Legacy: George
C. Marshall and the Marshall
Plan.”
August 18
Don and Marlys List have been
selected to be the grand marshals at this year’s Riverboat
Days parade. Don has spent
more than 25 years marching
with the VFW honor guard. The
Lists have been active with the
military and related causes in
the Yankton area for many years.

University of South Dakota
senior Autumn Simunek was
crowned Miss South Dakota
2015 recently in Hot Springs.
She will represent South Dakota
as the Miss America pageant in
Atlantic City in September.
August 19
The Yankton County Commission
is set to start a series of town
hall meetings, attended by two
commissioners each, in county
communities to speak on commission matters and gain input
from the public. The meetings
come as the commission gears
up for a referendum on the levy.
July 8
A public meeting was held last
night at the Yankton High School
Theater to collect input on the
Crane-Youngworth/Williams
Field project. Members of the
Building and Grounds committee made a formal presentation outlining the details of the
project to the public. The school
August 21
Authorities have confirmed the
body found in the Missouri River
near Elk Point is the 19 year
old swimmer missing since last
Sunday. The victim was identified as Brant Joseph Blaha of
Dante, SD. Blaha was in a group
