Washington, DC in March. Binder also serves as the president

With the announcement of a
$400,000 Transportation Alternative Program grant from the
South Dakota Transportation
Commission the trail system in
Yankton’s northwest corner is
moving forward. The grant will
be used to fund phase one of
a three phase plan. Phase one
runs from the end of the sidewalk on the Walmart property to
Adkins Drive.

The fire at the Colonial Inn is still
unsolved a year later. The case
was ruled an arson, but to date
no arrest have been made.
Yankton County Treasurer Pam
Marchand has announced her
resignation effective July 1. She

ever “Rock-A-Thon for Tuesday,
March 17. The fundraiser is one
of two going on at the Center.
Many community members and
leaders are seeing who can raise

The South Dakota State University Jackrabbits beat the University of South Dakota Coyotes 7257 for the championship of the
Summit League Women’s Basketball Tournament held in Sioux
Falls. This is their sixth tournament title in seven seasons.
The Tom and Leann Rockne family were chosen to be the newest inductees into the Sacred
Heart School’s Hall of Fame. The
Rockne family with eight children
who have graduated from SHA or
are current students have a long
history with the Catholic school

The Discovery Church of Yankton
is putting together a coffee shop
in the former Brunick’s Furniture
building in downtown Yankton. It
will be staffed by volunteers and
will provide coffee and baked
goods to the public for a donation rather than a set cost.

The Yankton School District is
looking at options for dealing
with the aging Crane-Youngworth
Facility. The stadium is nearly
90 years old and is showing
structural issues that require
either renovation or demolition.
Engineering studies came back
saying the structure issues need
to be dealt with in the next 3-5
years.

Avera Sacred Heart Hospital will
be doing a $3.5 million yearlong renovation project starting
this week. The project, which will
update patient care rooms on its
fifth floor/surgical floor, is being
done to improve the hospital’s
patient care facilities.

A security briefing yesterday at
the National Field Archery Association Easton Archery Center
complex brought together law
enforcement, firefighters and
other emergency personnel. They
are preparing for the World Archery Youth Championship set
for June 8-14.

Yankton’s own Roger Haas will
be celebrating their 25th anniversary under a new name the
Hansen-Haas Memorial Tournament. The name change is to
honor Dale “Ole” Hansen who
was one of the original organizers of the event who died in August of 2013 after a long bout
with cancer.

contest to find Yankton’s next
big idea, for the community’s
development the top prize is
$10,000.

Three scholarships have been
created in honor of Khrista
Ibarolle. The Yankton High School
Class of 2002 and Khrista’s parents Wayne and Lori will choose
the winners. The three scholarships focus on three of Khrista’s
passions band, athletics, and
the arts.

The search continues for a missing boy, Lincoln Hilt of Hartford,
who is presumed to have fallen
into the Missouri River during a
family fishing excursion to Yankton’s Riverside Park on Sunday.
April 8
Dakota Plains has renewed their
interest in locating a facility
near Napa Junction, northwest
of Yankton. Yankton Area Progressive Growth executive vice
president Jeff Jones approached
the Yankton County Commission
with the possibility of a Tax Increment Finance (TIF) district.
April 9
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was convicted on all thirty charges yesterday
in the Boston Marathon bombing. The jury will now decide
whether he should be executed
or life in prison. Two shrapnel
packed pressure cooker bombs
exploded near the finish line on
April 15, 2013. Tsarnaev carried out the attacks with his now
dead brother Tamerlan.
April 11
The body of missing boy, Lincoln
Hilt, was found around 2:44pm
on Friday about 100 yards east
of the boat dock where he disappeared from during a fishing
outing on Easter Sunday. The five
day search drew regional attention and drove a large amount of
social media traffic. The search
was plagued by poor weather.
April 13
Former senator and secretary of
state Hillary Clinton announced
her candidacy for president of
the United States through an online video yesterday. She would
make history as the first female
commander in chief.

Valley Springs fireman Steve Ackerman death will be felt across
the state. The 38-year-old Ackerman, a volunteer firefighter, lost
his life when he responded Sunday night to a Brandon house

David Smith, also perished in
the blaze. A funeral service is
scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at
the Brandon Valley High School
gymnasium in Brandon. It’s predicted that there will be a large
turnout of fellow firefighters from
across the state at the visitation
and funeral to pay their final respects to their fallen brother. According to state records he will
be the 43rd Line of Duty Death
we have recorded since 1929.
April 17
Bob Gravholt of Lesterville finally
received honors from the Korean
War. He received an “Ambassador for Peace” medal and proclamation from the South Korean
government, 61 years after the
truce was declared. Gravholt
received the recognition for his
service with “Operation Platform”
which assisted the prisoner exchange after the war ended.
April 21
The bird flu has been detected
on an Iowa farm. Up to 5.3 million hens must be destroyed
after the highly infectious and
deadly flue was confirmed by the
U.S. Department of Agriculture.
April 22
Gayville-Volin High School hosted their first varsity meet on their
new track complex yesterday. It
was a four year process of fundraising and construction. Cost
was approximately $350,000.
April 23
After 40 years of business,
Kopetsky’s Ace Hardware in
downtown Yankton will be closing
and consolidating to its 2404
Broadway location. Kopetsky’s
Ace Hardware started in downtown Yankton in 1975 when Leo
Kopetsky purchased a 3,500
square foot Coast to Coast hardware store.

Grammy winning “King & Country” a Christian rock brother duo
will present a concert at Mount
Marty College’s Laddie Cimpl
Arena next week. King & Country
is considered one of the rising
stars of Christian rock and rock
music in general.
Patty Vavra, deputy treasurer for
Yankton County is set to assume
the duties of outgoing treasurer
Pam Marchand. Marchand has
been treasurer since 1997 and
is set to retire effective July1.

Dean Rettedal, Mount Marty
College band director & faculty
member is retiring after 33 years.
His final event will be the MMC
Concert Band’s spring performance which will be held tomorrow on the Mount Marty College
campus.

Yankton County officials are
looking at ways to help create
a visible identity for the county.
A committee is now working on
trying to create a county seal incorporating elements important
to the area.
Yankton RiverWalk will be kicking
off their fifth year with the installation of 15 new sculptures on
May 8th. The event will be followed by an artist celebration at
the Old Mill.

First Dakota National Bank of
Yankton has pledged $75,000
to be used to help the community host next month’s World
Archery Youth Tournament at
the NFAA Easton Archery Center. Hundreds of young archers
from dozens of countries around
the globe will be descending on
Yankton for the event.
April 14
Senator Marco Rubio(R-Florida)
announced his candidacy for
president of the United States
yesterday at the Freedom Tower
in Miami.
May 4
Bob Mason of Yankton’s Redeeming Grace Bible church is
the local director of the National
Day of Prayer event which will be
held on May 7.
Ann Schiedel was announced
the School Nutrition Employee of
the Year for South Dakota at the
Yankton school board meeting
last night. She will be recognized
at the School Nutrition Association of South Dakota State Conference this year. She will also be
entered into regionals to try for a
national title.
The Yankton County Commission
is looking to create a regional
rail authority. The board will be
giving the public a chance to find
out more information and give
their input. Plans are to create
the authority, in conjunction with
the City of Yankton and include
Yankton County.
April 15
A tractor trailer carrying more
than 20 tons of grocery items
worth more than $200,000 was
destroyed in a fire on Highway 81
just south of Yankton. The blaze
started in the engine compartment and traffic was detoured
for hours.
President Barak Obama is seeking to remove Cuba from the

Lynn Starzl and Elizabeth (Starzl) Koerner won the respective
2015 Mother of the Year and
Young Mother of the Year titles.
They are believed to be one of
the few, if not the only, mother
and daughter to win the titles at
the same time and both advance
