An indication of the quality
of a year’s film output is the
amount of difficulty I have in
narrowing down a list to 10
favorites. After completing
the process for 2015, I felt as
though I’d been attacked by
a bear from “The Revenant,”
wounded multiple times in a
“Hateful Eight” shoot-out and
then left to live out my final
moments with Jar Jar Binks
(who — spoiler! — thankfully did not appear on the big
screen in 2015). That means it
was a really great year in film!
Behold the fruits of my
suffering:
10. “Hard to be a God”
(available on DVD and on
demand)
“Hard to be a God,” the
last film of Russian director
Aleksei German, took 15 years
to make. At times, it’s as if
the darkest of Monty Python
skits had been stirred into a
Hieronymous Bosch painting.
Each frame of this science fiction film is meticulous. Never
has slop and bodily excretions been filmed with such
precision. Because of this, the
story of a group of scientists visiting a planet going
through its “medieval stage”
— and treated as gods while
doing so — is, well, hard to
watch for the squeamish.
However, the artistic achievement that this film represents
is undeniable.
9. “The Duke of Burgundy” (available on demand)
“The Duke of Burgundy”
defies many expectations. It
takes a certain fetish typically
played for laughs in film, or
at least not often treated with
much depth, and uses it as a
springboard for a tender love
story between two women.
Based on what we see of this
community, there do not appear to be any males — and
the study of insects is a popular pastime for its inhabitants. Director Peter Strickland builds a lush vaguely
Victorian world (that includes
a visual tribute to American

experimental filmmaker Stan

mesmerizing soundtrack to
create something seductive,
beautiful and just a little
unsettling.
8. “Entertainment”
(available on demand)
The comedian played by
Gregg Turkington (a variation
of his real-life Neil Hamburger
persona) may be among the
most alienated and lonely people you’ve ever met on screen.
He slogs through the American
West playing shows in prisons,
dive bars and other third-rate
venues insulting his audiences
and trying desperately to connect with a daughter we never
see. I loved Rick Alverson’s
“The Comedy” several years
ago. While “Entertainment”
isn’t as aggressive in its confrontational style as that film,
it throws plenty of punches.
Admittedly, it would be hard
to pinpoint “the point” of this
blackest of black comedies,
but I saw in it a meditation on
the increasing alienation that
seems to be engulfing so much
of America and has fueled our
current journey into the heart
of darkness.
7. “Wild Tales” (available on demand)
It is human nature to want
to watch as people lose their
grip on reality and retaliate
when confronted with an unjust, frustrating or heartbreaking situation — at least if we
can do so from a distance. The
Argentine import “Wild Tales”
is an anthology of six stories
that chronicle people in extreme situations, and each one
is a gem. From a bride who
finds out during her wedding
celebration that her husband
has probably been unfaithful,
to what is perhaps the craziest
case of road rage you’ve ever
seen, these dark, humorous
stories will keep you glued to
the screen. When the madness
has ended, you’ll be dying to
discuss what you’ve just seen
with a friend.
6. “The Big Short” (in
theaters)
