October 9Yankton is set to kickoff South Dakota’s
125th anniversary celebration on
November 2nd. A 125th Birthday
Inaugural Ball will be held at the
Riverfront Event Center in downtown
Yankton. South Dakota became a state
on November 2, 1889.
December 2Kiley and Jennifer Hammond are the
new owners of Stockmen’s Livestock
Market in Yankton. They purchased the
business in October from Gail Sohler,
who sold the business after more than
half a century of ownership.
October 10Three Yankton Minimum Unit inmates
raised more than 1,000 pumpkins,
which tipped the scales at more than
20,000 pounds. More than 700 of these
pumpkins will be distributed at area elementary schools and other sites.
December 5Nelson Mandela, 95, Colossus of the
20th century who emerged from 27
years in prison to negotiate an end to
white minority rule in South Africa and
became that nation’s first black president.
October 11An Army of 50 volunteers helped harvest 400 acres of beans at the late
Denny Halvorson farm northwest of
Irene yesterday. Denny battled cancer
and suffered a stroke before passing
away two weeks ago at the age of 56.
December 6Australian Brian Morris recently found a
South Dakota 147th Field Artillery
Regiment ring along the beach at
Yeppon, Central Queensland, Australia.
Morris is attempting to find the owner or
his descendants. The South Dakota
147th Field Artillery was stationed in the
country during World War II.
October 19Twenty-five years ago the Yankton
Federal Prison Camp opened in
Yankton. Eight of its original employees
still work at the facility. Ken Coyle, Deb
Stucky, Monty Smith, Ray Quinlivan,
Richard Muller, Laura Bartunek, Tom
Lewno, and Dave McKee. The federal
Bureau of Prisons purchased the 14
major buildings spread across 30 acres
on the former Yankton College campus
for $3.1 million in May 1988.
The St. Helena Dance Hall turned 100
years old this year. German immigrants
came to Nebraska and settled in the St.
Helena area thanks to the 1862
Homestead Act. The hall was originally
built as a place to hold their ethnic gatherings, the place still stands today with
improvements because of the St.
Helena Social Club.
October 26Adam Grimm of Burbank was recently
named the winner of the 2014-15
Federal Duck Stamp Contest and his
daughter Madison was awarded the
Federal Junior Duck Stamp Contest. At
age 6, she was the youngest winner in
the history of the award, which is open
to students in grades K-12.
October 28Keep Yankton Beautiful used a grant
from the Otto Ullrich Memorial Trust to
install in the city’s parks two multi level
drinking fountains that can be used by
people and dogs.
November 2Yankton is hosting the inaugural celebration of the 125th anniversary of
South Dakota becoming a state. The
Yankton Quasquicentennial Committee
has planned for a celebration featuring
historic re-enactors, respected dignitaries, and music and dancing. The
Yankton Antique Auto Association members will also line the streets with their
historic automobiles. Governor Dennis
Daugaard and Lt. Governor Matt
Michaels will be in town for the celebration.
November 5Stewart Elementary school physical
education teacher Lisa Card is the 2013
recipient of the South Dakota
Association for Health, Physical
Education Recreation and Dance’s
Elementary Teacher of the Year award.
November 13The Gayville-Volin school district has
upgraded their security with an access
feature at the building entrance. The
1,400 square foot addition and other
building improvements carries a price
tag of around $200,000. The new addition addresses some school security
issues by providing more controlled
access to the school and increasing visibility by the administration.
Nelson Mandela, 95, former president
of South Africa and recipient of the
Nobel Peace Prize, died yesterday.
Mandela was South Africa’s first black
president and spent nearly one third of
his life as a prisoner of apartheid.
Mandela, 95, was a global symbol of
sacrifice and reconciliation.
December 7Yankton native Tim Hausmann is the
manager and wine buyer for the Little
Wine Shoppe in the St. Anthony Park in
St. Paul, Minnesota.
He recently
became a certified sommelier.
December 11Yankton’s city attorney David Hosmer
has announced his resignation effective
December 31. He is joining Randy
Johnson at Legacy Financial Group as
a financial planner.
December 12South Dakota Magazine recently
released the book “South Dakota 125: A
Pictorial History” that features photos
from every year since South Dakota’s
inception in 1889.
Bernie Hunhoff, who wrote the book
along with John Andrews and Roger
Holtzman, publishes the magazine.
December 14While construction of a large grain elevator in Yankton County has been
delayed. Bill Beukema, general manager of the Parkston-based Dakota Plains
Ag Center, said the company is waiting
on the state to grant it rail access for
what is being called Dakota Plains Napa
Junction. The facility would be located
along the railroad approximately three
miles northwest of Yankton. It could be
up to a $50 million grain shuttle facility.
December 16
Yankton attorney Jason Ravnsborg
announced he is running or Senator Tim
Johnson’s seat. Ravnsborg, 37, has
never run for any office but does have a
military background. The University of
South Dakota graduate has served 17
years in the U.S. Army holding the rank
of major in the Army Reserves. He was
deployed overseas, and his 2009-10
mission to Afghanistan marked his
fourth command of a military operation.
December 17Avera Sacred Heart Hospital’s Northern
Lights addition is now in operation. The
$17 million project has been under construction for a year and a half. The addition includes the kitchen/cafeteria, a
new pharmacy, laboratory, and physician’s entrance, sleeps labs, physical
therapy, administrative offices, a new
waiting area and expanded conference
space.
November 15Jan Putnam of Yankton received the
Special Olympics South Dakota Don
Baker Award. She has served the
SOSD for 16 years, 13 of those years
she has been head of the Yankton
Delegation. The Don Baker award is
given annually in honor of Baker, a former volunteer and official starter for
Special Olympics events.
December 18Parks Superintendent Jim Snook has
been chosen as Yankton’s City
Employee of the Year. This is the first
year the award has been given out. City
Manager Amy Nelson brought forward
the idea. She was previously city manager in Canton where they have the program. Snook began working for the city
35 years ago at the age of 18. He
became the superintendent of the parks
department seven years ago.
November 20Yankton County Commissioner Mark
Johnson is resigning his position effective December 31. He is taking a position with the TransCanada that owns the
Keystone Pipeline that runs through the
Yankton area.
December 20Mount Marty College recently began
web casting joining the rest of the Great
Plains Athletic Conference. The webcasts through Livestream can be
accessed through the college’s website

November 21A do-it-yourself licensing terminal has
been installed in the Yankton Hy-Vee

December 21Two donations at Mount Marty College
will honor its past and present presidents. The two $50,000 gifts are intended for naming opportunities in the new
Avera Science and Nursing Laboratory
Complex. The naming rights will be tributes to Sister Evangeline Anderson and
Sister Marie Helene Werdel.
November 2250 years ago today President John F.
Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas,
Texas.
The memory of that day is like a wound
that never heals. People today can still
tell you where they were and what they
were doing when they heard the news.
The nation was in a deep state of shock
and mourning that such a thing could
happen here in the United States. This
tragic event changed our nation forever.
December 24Longtime Yankton doctor Duane
Reaney passed away earlier this week
at the age of 90. Reaney was a 1945
graduate of the University of South
Dakota’s School of Medicine and practiced family medicine in the Yankton
area for more than 40 years. During that
time, he delivered more than 5,000
babies and enjoyed caring for people of
every age at his practice.
November 25The Yankton High School Marching
Band will be performing in the
McDonalds Thanksgiving Parade in
Chicago, Illinois.
November 29Yankton native Gunnery Sgt. William
Janssen, a 1995 Yankton High School
graduate will be put in charge of all
Marine recruiting in eastern South
Dakota, southwest Minnesota and
northwest Iowa, he will start the position
next spring.
November 30Chris Sudbeck of Yankton needed a kidney transplant and his wife Myla, offered
her kidney to save his life. However, she
was not compatible, she was able to
donate her kidney to a 20 year old
Rochester, Minnesota woman and her
father in turn donated his kidney to
Chris. The Mayo Clinic of Rochester
arranged the pair donation. The
Sudbecks and the Rochester family
agreed to meet and remain in contact
with each other.
December 27Former U.S. Senator Larry Pressler
announced he is running for Senate as
an independent. Pressler, 71, served
two terms in the U.S. House of
Representatives and three terms in the
Senate. He lost a re-election bid in 1996
to Democrat Tim Johnson who is not
seeking re-election.
December 28John Kramer will be taking over the
duties of President of the Yankton Area
Progressive Growth on January 1,
2014. Kramer, 62, is filling the position
vacated by Mike Dellinger in August.
December 31JJ Hejna has been named the Press &
Dakotan Prep Male Athlete of the Year.
He has broke many records at Yankton
High School this year. He participates in
basketball, football and track & field. In
football he caught 63 passes for more
than 1,205 yards and his 10 receiving
touchdowns for this year broke a single
season record.
