bene?ts and veteran
programs. Those
served include the
veteran, widows of
veterans, dependent
children of veterans
as well as dependent
parents who lost a
son or daughter in
military service.
“This opportunity
came up, and seeing
as how I’m a vet,
I thought I could
help some others
that need some help
getting through
the paper work,”
McDonald recently
told the Yankton Daily
Press & Dakotan.
The variety of
issues in which
McDonald might
become involved in
any given week is
considerable. A list
might include; GI
loans, compensation,
pensions, education,
rehabilitation,
medical and
dental treatment,
hospitalization or
outpatient treatment
or nursing home
care, residency at
the State Veterans’
Home, other state
bene?ts, Social
Security, alcoholism
and drug dependency
treatment,
employment and
unemployment,
small business
loans, corrections
of military records,
review of discharges,
burial in a national
cemetery, expense
reimbursement,
headstone or burial
allowance, obtaining
?ags, as well as
the protection of
veterans’ and
widows’ preferences.
These are only some
of the issues that can
come up, and there
can be many more.
McDonald has
an important yet
dif?cult role. Many
issues are complex
and if a Service
Of?cer does not
know all the answers
due to complexity
or ever-changing
federal laws, rest
assured they know
where to obtain the
information and
how to help each
of their clients cut
government red tape.
“VA bureaucracy can
be pretty maddening,
and I’m going to do
the best I can to work
for you,” McDonald
told the Yankton Daily
Press & Dakotan.
“If I don’t know the
answer, I’ll try my
hardest to ?nd out.”
McDonald, having
served in the U.S.
Navy in the 1970s,
acknowledges that
that there may be
a whole group of
veterans needing
help. McDonald told
the Missouri Valley
Shopper that when
offered the position,
he took some time
to think about it.
He recognized
many veterans
from the Vietnam
era came home
to an undesirable
situation. Many of
these veterans are
now between the
ages of in the 65-75.
McDonald wants
them to know things
are different now.
“These are my guys”
McDonald stated.
Recent world
events have led to
a new generation of
veterans who will
need assistance.
These young men
and women come
from a faster paced
and technologically
advanced
environment than
those from previous
wars. Their needs
and expectations are
much different from
those who served
before them.
Since the original
legislation in 1944
South Dakota’s
network of County
& Tribal Veterans
Service Of?cers have
assisted thousands
of veterans and their
family members, and
the job is nowhere
near done.
The Yankton County
Veteran Services
Of?ce is located on
