June 13Jennifer Johnke has been chosen as
the new Yankton High School principal.
She is replacing Dr. Wayne Kindle; he
was recently selected as the new
Yankton School District Superintendent.
Johnke has been the assistant principal
at Yankton High School for the last three
years.
June 17Jessica Albers of Yankton competed in
the Miss USA pageant in Las Vegas last
weekend. She was one of 51 contestants; the crown was won by Miss
Connecticut, Erin Brady.
June 19Yankton County Auditor Paula Jones
will retire from her position and the end
of the month due to ongoing medical
issues. She has been on medical leave
since early February.
June 21The local chapter of the Experimental
Aircraft Association and the Yankton
Regional Aviation Association sponsored flights in a 1929 Ford Tri-motor
airplane that flew into Yankton yesterday. The plane was designed by Henry
Ford in 1929 and is touring the country
this summer stopping in 11 states offering rides.
June 24Yankton native Colton Iverson is awaiting a call from the NBA draft. Iverson is
a 2008 Yankton High School graduate
and is a first team member of the All
Mountain West Conference player as a
senior for Colorado State. He has
worked out for 18 NBA teams and is listed as number 43 on the website’s top
100 prospects for the draft.

Colton Iverson has been selected to
play professional basketball. Indiana
selected him in the second round – the
53rd overall pick in Thursday nights
NBA draft and was later acquired by the
Boston Celtics.
July 5Josh Loest, of Utica, will have his drawing published in the children’s magazine
“Highlights”; he drew a small mouth
bass and submitted it to the contest last
year.
July 6After 16 years on the Yankton School
Board Chris Specht is set to retire.
Specht was first elected to the board in
1997 and recently served as the board
president.
July 12Yankton native, Josh Hoffner helped
turn AP coverage of a sensational Arias
trial into new book. “Killer Girlfriend”.
Hoffner, a 1994 Yankton High School
graduate, served as the lead editor on
the coverage of the Phoenix based murder trial.

June 10Yankton native Layne Somsen has
been drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in
the 22nd round of Saturday’s MLB
Draft.
June 29Superintendent Dr. Joe Gertsema is
leaving the Yankton School District after
22 years. He will now be teaching college classes at the University of Sioux
Falls and an additional course at Dakota
Wesleyan University in Mitchell.

Steve Hermanson is retiring after 32
years as a volunteer firefighter with the
Yankton Volunteer Fire Department.
Hermanson followed in the footsteps of
his father Howard who was also a
Yankton firefighter for more than 25
years.

July 26The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge
welcomed their son George Alexander
Louis in London, England on July 23.
The new prince is now third in line to the
throne.
August 8A Niobrara, Nebraska couple were sentenced to 10 years in prison with 9 years
suspended for during down their
Springfield restaurant. Charles and
Kimberly Johnson are accused of setting fire to Libby’s Steakhouse to collect
insurance money. They were both convicted of felony arson and reckless burning, both Class 3 felonies.
August 14A groundbreaking ceremony was held
yesterday in Vermillion for Eagle Creek
Software Services. The facility will be
located southwest of Walmart. The facility is expected to create 200 new jobs in
the Vermillion market.
August 15Dozens of people toured the former
Post Office during an open house yesterday. The U.S. Postal Service via an
online bidding process is selling off the
structure. The post office was built in
1904 and use of it was discontinued in
January of 2012.
August 16Mount Marty
College
officials
announced a $3 million dollar renovation project that will benefit sciences and
nursing. The renovation of the Old
Library and former Mount Marty High
School building will begin today. The
project will provide a new home for science and nursing students currently
studying and working in Bede Hall that
was constructed in 1936.
August 20Yankton County was able to sell two of
its three properties during auctions held
yesterday. The former Yankton County
Highway Shop was sold to Joe
Schieffer, who owns Midwest Autoplex
property adjacent to the shop for
$142,000.
August 24Ellen McVay of Yankton was diagnosed
with Alzheimer’s disease three years
ago and was recently chosen for a 10member national advisory group for
people with early stage Alzheimer’s.
She and her husband Dr. Michael
McVay are active with efforts at the state
level. They were recently featured in an
interview with the Huffington Post, a
news website.
August 29Yankton Police officers Rob Buechler,
Jeremy McNinch, Monty Rothenberger
and Corporal Brad Parker received
meritorious services certificates for their
part in rescuing an unconscious woman
from the Missouri River on July 21.
The Yankton High School marching
band has been invited to perform as part
of the 2013 McDonald’s Thanksgiving
Parade in Chicago.
September 7Former USD Athletic Director Jack
Doyle died yesterday in California at the
age of 80. He was athletic director for 15
years. He was hired in 1971 as the
men’s assistant basketball coach. He
was named head coach in 1973. He
became the athletic director in March of
1982 and retired in 1998.
September 14Yankton Area Progressive Growth and
the National Field Archery Association
are forming a partnership to purchase
20 acres of property along Highway 50
just south of Applied Engineering. The
land is adjacent to the NFAA Easton
Yankton Archery Complex. Yankton officials hope people in the industry will see
the possibilities Yankton could hold for
them
September 16Monday gunman Aaron Alexis went on
a rampage at the Washington Naval
Yard in Washington, DC killing 12 people before being shot to death by law
enforcement officials. He had complained to police in early August in
Rhode Island that people were talking to
him through the walls and ceilings of his
hotel rooms and sending microwave
vibrations into his body to deprive him of
sleep. Alexis was a 34-year-old information technology employee at a defense
related Computer Company and used a
valid pass to get into the Naval yard.

September 20Roger Kubal, the maintenance manager at Sapa in Yankton, learned he had
thyroid cancer at a company sponsored
Health & Safety Day last year. He is now
cancer free. Sapa offers there more
than 400 employees free of charge
health screenings each year.
September 21Friends and family remembered former
fire chief Pat Smith at his funeral today.
Smith served as the Yankton Fire Chief
from 1973 to 1996. Smith was transported to the cemetery on the Yankton
Fire Department’s Engine Two. He
overseen the construction of Fire
Station No. 1 at Fifth Street and Douglas
Avenue and laid the foundation for
Station Number Two.
September 24Yankton College’s board of trustees
approved a preliminary agreement with
the Yankton County Historical Society to
occupy 3,200 square feet of space on
the third floor of the historic Mead building once it is restored.
September 25A 1971 Cold case may finally see closure after skeletal remains were found
along with a 1960 Studebaker near a
bridge in Union County. Pam Jackson
and Cheryl Miller both of Vermillion were
last seen on May 29, 1971. A lower than
usual water level
September 27JJ Henja and Susanna Kinsley were
crowned the Pioneer Days prince and
princess during the Yankton High
School’s homecoming coronation. The

October 2The government shutdown means a
halt to area services for the National
Park Service, the U.S. Department of
Agriculture’s Rural Development offices
and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The
U.S. Postal Service will keep delivering
mail and the Social Security beneficiaries will continue receiving checks and
active military will continue serving their
tour of duty.
October 4Yankton native Father Kristopher
Cowles played a key role in St. Joseph
School in Pierre being selected as a
National Blue Ribbon Award. Cowles
has served the last two years as an
associate pastor at Sts. Peter and Paul
Catholic Church in Pierre, located next
to the school.
October 7Wayne, Nebraska is cleaning up after
an EF4 tornado hit Friday night leaving
behind millions of dollars in damage. 15
people were injured in the storm, but
there were no fatalities. Several tornadoes touched down in Nebraska, South
Dakota and Iowa. This same storm sys-
