April 16Two bombs exploded in the crowded
streets near the finish line of the Boston
Marathon. The bombing killed three and
injured more than 140. Yankton native
Matt Dewald finished 20th in the
marathon. Two more unexploded
bombs were found near the end of the
course. The blast took place 10 seconds apart and about 100 yards apart,
knocking people to their feet, shattering
windows and sending smoke rising over
the streets. Officials are afraid terrorists
have struck the U.S. again.
Diana Roth of Yankton was named the
2012 Volunteer of the Year. She worked
at the Yankton School District for more
than 20 years and volunteered with
RSVP, at the schools, hospital and her
church.

April 23Al Neuharth, founder or USA Today,
died Friday, he was 89. His legacy can
be found at the University of South
Dakota in Vermillion, his alma mater as
well as the school newspaper the
Volante. Many students from Yankton
and the surrounding area said he never
forgot his South Dakota roots.
April 26Two community contributors, a teacher
and a Yankton High School graduate
make up this year’s class for the YHS
Fine Arts Hall of Fame. Jack and
Margaret Lyons, Richard Anderson and
Michael Amon will be inducted as members of the 2013 class. Michael Amon,
a 1997 YHS graduate, is the news editor of the Greater New York section of
The Wall Street Journal. Richard “Dick”
Anderson taught for the Yankton Public
School District from 1962 to 2008. He
spent his entire career in Yankton, first at
the junior high school from 1962-68, followed by the senior high school until his
retirement in 2008. “It’s definitely an
honor for him to be inducted, and
through the years, he respected all of
the previous inductees,” Louise
Anderson said about her husband, who
passed away last November. “I’m sure if
he were here today, he would be humbled and saying it wasn’t his time to be
inducted.” Jack and Margaret Lyons are
both retired music teachers who
received the 2004 Yankton Area Arts
Advocate Award and were named 2009
Yankton Citizens of the Year. Jack, a
1952 graduate of YHS, was a faculty
member and music department and
division chair at Mount Marty College
from 1965-98. He started the college
Vespers, was involved with annual
music tours and directed many college
musicals. Margaret was involved with
the Yankton public school system for 25
years before retiring in 1999. Margaret
has also worked with the Yankton
Children’s Choir, as well as various
church groups and choirs.
George Jones, 81, a hard living country
singe who recorded dozens of hits
about good times and regrets and
peaked with the heartbreaker “He
Stopped Loving Her Today”.
April 27Kyle Duke of Yankton has set his sights
on qualifying for the 2016 Paralympics
archery competition. To qualify he must
participate in Paralympics archery tournaments around the country during the
next three years to build up his points
and experience.

April 17Yankton School District has chosen Dr.
Wayne Kindle to be the next
Superintendent of the Yankton School
District. Kindle has been principal at
Yankton High School since 2007. He
began his career with the Yankton
School district as a sixth grade teacher
in 1991, in 1994 he was the associate
principal at Yankton Middle School and
became principal in 1995.

April 29Mount Marty College has named
Ginger Moeller as the new vice president of finance. She recently served as
the associate controller at South Dakota
State University in Brookings.
April 30Lois Eli of Yankton will have the distinction of being the longest serving employee of Yankton County when she retires
today. Governor Dennis Daugaard has
issued an executive proclamation designating tomorrow as “Lois Eli Day” in
South Dakota.
May 1Former Yankton County Commissioner
William “Bill” Tamisiea died Saturday at
the age of 85. He was a county commissioner from 2000-2004 and 2006-2010.
After learning the family business he
bought Baggs & Tamisiea, a John
Deere implement dealership, from his
father, Ralph Tamisiea and Clint Baggs.
May Day was greeted with 2 inches of
snowfall and freezing temperatures in
Yankton. Looking at the records,
Yankton had measurable snow twice in
May in 1944 with 3.2 inches and .5 inches in 1945.
May 2Three college friends of Boston
Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar
Tsarnaev were arrested for aiding him
after he allegedly committed his crimes.
May 3Jacob and Luke Feimer, along with their
parents, Doug and Katie, are being honored as the ambassador family for the
local March of Dimes annual March for
Babies event.
Football players from two different eras,
a girls’ basketball star and a coach comprise the 2013 class of the Yankton High
School Athletic Hall of Fame. Emil
Cwach, an offensive lineman from the
1950s; Scott Nedved, Yankton’s all-time
leader in rushing yards; Gayle
(Hiemstra) Vail, who led the Gazelles to
three straight title appearances in the
early 1980s; and Gene Bormann, who
made his name as an outstanding track
and cross country coach, will be inducted into the hall during the YHS AllSports Recognition on Thursday, May 9.
May 6Gail Sohler, 75, owner of Stockman’s
Livestock in Yankton is retiring after 51
yeas as owner of the business. A retirement party will be held in his honor
tomorrow. He will be turning over management of the business to long time
field representative and manager
Duane Haberman.
May 7“Charles” Chuck Lambertz, 61, of
Yankton died unexpectedly last week.
He has served as executive director of
the Lewis & Clark Theatre until health
issues forced him to retire in August
2012. Lambertz began working at the
theatre in 2005.
May 8Rodney Bert, 50 was sentenced to
death again for the killing of prison guard
Ronald Johnson; his first conviction was
overturned by the state Supreme Court
earlier this year.
Irene-Wakonda Superintendent Larry
Johnke is retiring next month after 43
years in education. Secondary Principal
Dave Hutchison will be taking over the
position.
Jeanne Cooper, 84, soap opera star
who played Katherine Chancellor for
nearly four decades on the “Young and
the Restless”.
May 9Bob Tereshinski is retiring from Mount
Marty College after more than 20 years.
He is currently Vice President and Dean
of Academic Affairs. He has served as a
baseball coach, instructor, professor
and dean. The new Vice President and
Dean of Academic Affairs is Suzy
Kalsow, She has served as the associate vice president for academic affairs
and the dean of graduate and professional studies for nearly two years at
Buena Vista University in Storm Lake,
Iowa.
Ariel Castro, 52 of Ohio has been
charged with four counts of kidnapping,
three counts of rape of three women
that he kept captive in a house for over
a decade. The women were bound with
ropes and chains and subjected to prolonged sexual and psychological abuse
and suffered miscarriages.
May 10The upgrades to Gavins Point Dam
spillway gates have begun. It is going to
be a two year project according to Dave
Becker, Gavins Point operations project
manager. The repairs began last year
due to the 2011 flood and the fact that
the structure is 55 years old.
May 11The National Field Archery Association
complex will be getting a $1 million
upgrade. The project is slated to begin in
June. The association is set to host the
World Field Archery Championships in
2014. President Bruce Cull said they
are expecting 800 participants hailing
from 50 states and at least 30 nations.
May 16President Obama has ousted IRS
Director Steve T. Miller amid a scandal
involving the agency. The agency had
improperly targeted the tea party group
for scrutiny when they filed for taxexempt status.

many years and helping out behind the

active in Riverboat Days.
May 17The Yankton School District is saying
goodbye to 18 staff members who have
more than 512 years experience.

Andrew Baker has been named the
new Head Men's Basketball Coach at
Mount Marty College. Baker will be the
8th head coach in Lancer history. He
succeeds Jim Thorson, who recently
resigned after leading the program the
last 18 years. Baker has been the assistant coach to the Lancer men's program
the past two years.
May 22An EF5 tornado hit Moore, Oklahoma
on May 20 and claimed 24 lives, nine of
those were children. Countless homes
were destroyed by the tornado. The
twister had winds of at least 200 mph
and was on the ground for 40 minutes.
The tornado tore the roof off and
knocked down walls and destroyed the
playground
of
Plaza
Towers
Elementary. Seven of the nine children
killed were at the school.
May 23Trinity Lutheran Church will be dedicating their new sanctuary this weekend.
The new 11,00 square feet $2.5 million
addition marked a major milestone for
the church. The public is welcome to
attend the worship service and open
house.
May 25Sister Margo Tschetter is retiring after 34
years of service to Sacred Heart
Catholic School and the Yankton
Catholic Community. She has taught
school for 45 years and currently taught
fifth grade at Sacred Heart School. She
will be honored at an open house on
Sunday at the Sacred Heart Church
parish hall.
May 29The Mount Marty Lancers have signed
Tiffany Tramp of Crofton, Nebraska to
run cross-country and track for Mount
Marty College. Tiffany is the daughter of
Shawntel and Mark Tramp. She recently graduated form Crofton High School
in Crofton, Nebraska.
May 30For more than 25 years Yankton residents have been able to wake up to “
Morning Coffee” on KYNT AM 1450.
