Year. Brooks spent almost 50 years providing obstetrician/gynecology services
to patients, and was the first fully trained
OB/GYN in the region when he arrived
in 1948. Meanwhile, Vi spent years in
the banking and non-profit sectors.
Later in their lives, the two collaborated
on a shared passion — designing and
escorting tour groups.

promotion, odor-control strategies, farm
aesthetics and innovative ideas used to

January 24Eleanor Wrede Nielsen, formerly of
Bloomfield, Nebraska marked a milestone on Saturday when she celebrated
her 110th birthday. She currently resides
in a nursing home in Norfolk, Nebraska.
She is the second oldest resident of
Nebraska. She was born on January
26, 1903, in West Point, Nebraska to
John and Anna Wrede.

Funeral Home has been honored with
the Patriot Award from the Department
of Defense’s Employer Support of the
Guard and Reserve (ESGR) agency.
She was nominated by Bravo Battery
Pfc. Jordan Schurman because of
Keller’s efforts to provide him with flexible hours for his National Guard duties
January 26Taylor Specht and her grandfather
Dean Specht were inspired by SDSU
men’s basketball coach Scott Nagy’s
work with “Samaritan’s Feet” and organized the Yankton project that served 150
children yesterday. Specht solicited
more than $3,000 in donations, which
she forwarded to Samaritan’s Feed for
the purchase of the shoes.
January 18Pauline Friedman Phillips, who under
the name of Abigail Van Buren, wrote
the long-running “Dear Abby” advice
column that was followed by millions of
newspaper readers throughout the
world, has died. She was 94.
Yankton Resident Todd Van Maanen
was recently honored as the South
Dakota Pork Producers Council 2012
Honorary Master Pork Producer. The
award is given to someone who actively
supports the South Dakota swine industry.
January 19The Northern State University marching
band of Aberdeen, which features four
area students, will be marching in the
inaugural parade. The Marching
Wolves include Carrie Pospishil and
Schuyler Boyd of Yankton, Kaitlin
Buchholz of Tripp and Ellie Wintersteen
of Olivet. The unit is among more than
40 organizations invited to participate in
the 57th inaugural parade. “The band
was selected from more than 2,800
applicants.
A downtown Yankton landmark has
been restored. Terri Cash, owner of
Temari Designs, will be moving into the
location once occupied by Meredith’s
Jewelers on Third Street in downtown
Yankton. Meredith’s had a sign with a
clock on it and Cash decided the clock
was too much of a landmark to take
down. “I didn’t just want to take down the
old sign and put up another one, so I
had the old sign and clock redone with
the store name,” she said. “The clock
has been a part of downtown for a long
time and I wanted to keep it there.”

during Mount Marty College homecoming festivities this week.

February 6Yankton County Auditor Paula Jones is
on unexpected medial leave. Larry
Jones, Paula’s husband yesterday, notified the Yankton County Commission.
The commission said the state would
assist Yankton County with the property
tax bills the commission called for a trio
of actions starting with the call to the
Department of Revenue to assist
Yankton County with calculating its tax
levies so property taxes can be paid.
The second resolution requests the
Department of Revenue and the South
Dakota Department of Legislative Audit
to complete and audit of Jones office
with the findings to be delivered to the
Yankton County Commission. The third
resolution would be for the commission
to make inquiries concerning temporary
assistance in the auditor’s office while
Jones is absent.
February 8Long-time Yankton landmark, the old
Trinity Lutheran Church on the corner of
Sixth and Capitol was demolished; the
church was built in 1903. The area is
owned by Sacred Heart Church and
church officials said the space would be
used as green space for the children at
Sacred Heart School.
The Mount Marty College cafeteria in
Roncalli is undergoing a facelift. The
renovation will feature a new layout that
will offer students multiple hot and cold
stations for food, an area just for pizza,
a new griddle, and an Asian wok station.

down as pope on February 28. The resignation is the first in 600 years,
Benedict said in 2010 that a pontiff
should resign if he got too old or infirm to
do the job, but surprised the world when

February 16A Scotland man gets life in prison for his
second-degree murder conviction in the
March 2011 death of his four-month-old
infant son Jacob Miller. He was also
sentenced to 50 years for aggravated
assault and 10 years probation for probation violation, will all sentences to run
consecutively.
Larry Hames was recently inducted into
the Sacred Heart Hall of Fame. Hames
acted as the liaison between the school
board and the construction company
during the St. Benedict school addition.
He also managed the investment certificate program for Sacred Heart and St.
Benedict and set up all the computer
networks in Sacred Heart Elementary
and middle school.
February 19Judi O’Connell and Jane Pugh were
honored with the “Woman of Distinction”
award during the 5th annual luncheon
held at Mount Marty College’s Roncalli
Center. The program honors women
from Yankton for their service to the
community. The keynote speaker was
Kristie VerMulm, who is a news anchor
for KTIV in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Yankton Police Department recently acquired a remote control robot
through a Department of Defense program. The remote control robot is
equipped with a camera that can be
sent into potentially dangerous environments to show officers what lies ahead.
The robot and the supporting equipment are worth more than $12,000k,
however the department obtained it for
only $200-the cost of shipping.

February 27Yankton city attorney James Goetz, 86,
died Friday. He served as the City of
Yankton’s attorney for 48 years. Goetz
graduated from Creighton University in
Omaha, Nebraska with a law degree at
age 22, he then came to Yankton to start
his practice, and he practiced law for
more than 60 years in South Dakota
and Nebraska.
The U. S. Senate has confirmed former
Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel to be
the nation’s next defense secretary. The
vote was 58-41, Hagel, 66, a former two
terms Nebraska Senator and twicewounded Vietnam combat veteran, and
he will succeed Defense Secretary
Leon Panetta.
March 1The Yankton River Walk committee has
unveiled 14 new sculptures with artists
hailing from eight states. Two Yankton
artists Roger Huntley and Scott Luken
will return. Other artists include

longer be used as a polling station.
During the general election of 2012
Yankton County and the Secretary of
State piloted the e-poll book and voting
center concept. With the new poll book
in place there is less need for so many
precincts and voting centers. Voters can
now go to any voting center to cast their
ballots. This replaces the need for
precincts.
March 11The Wynot boy’s basketball team has
captured their first boy’s basketball state
title with a win over Spalding/Spalding
Academy in double overtime. The victory was triumphant for Wynot fans that
saw the Wynot girl’s basketball team
win the state title last week.

February 23Eight youth archers competed earlier
this month at the National Field Archery
Association’s World Archery Festival in
Las Vegas. Out of the eight youths four
of them placed in the top 10 archers
included Kendra Hunhoff, Gabby

March 14Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 76, the
archbishop of Buenos Aires has been
elected as the new pope. He is the first
pope from the Americas, the first Jesuit
and the first named Francis, after St.
Francis of Assisi, the man who dedicated his life to helping the poor. His title will
be Pope Francis I.
Eagle Creek Software Services has
chosen Vermillion as their new project
center. They have the potential to create
1,000 new jobs. The company’s headquarters is in Eden Prairie, Minnesota
and was founded in 1999. The company provides consulting and technical
expertise in software development,

March 20Services were held yesterday for
Vermillion teen Madison Wallace, 16
who drowned in the Big Sioux River last
week after she attempted to rescue her
younger brother, Garrett after he slipped
into the icy water during a family outing
to Falls Park in Sioux Falls. Bystander,
Lyle Eagletail, 28, of Sioux Falls also
entered the water to help the children
and lost his life in the river also. Garrett
was rescued from the river later uninjured.
March 21-
The Missouri National Recreation River
officials are introducing a new attraction
to the park. A new mobile visitor’s center
that will be taken to area parks and
events in the hopes of attracting additional traffic to the river. The trailer has
already been at Mount Rushmore.
March 27Senator Tim Johnson has come home
to Vermillion to announce his retirement
from the U.S. Senate. Senator Johnson
with his wife Barbara by his side
announced he would not seek re-election for a third term. He will be 68 years
old at the end of his current term.
Johnson has held a political office since
he was first elected to the state legislature in 1978 while practicing law in
Vermillion. He has won 12 elections in
a row, which includes four in the state
Legislature, five in the U.S. House of
Representatives and three in the U. S.
Senate.
March 30The Yankton County Clerk of Courts
office has gone digital. Yankton joins 13
other counties in the First Judicial Circuit
and 14 counties in the Sixth Circuit in
making the switch. The new system
known as Odyssey, replaces various
legacy systems that have been in use
since the 1980’s
April 1Local archers will compete in the South
Dakota Archers Association State
Indoor Championships held in Sioux
Falls on March 23-24. Participants
included Jamie Van Lent, Kevin Colgan,
Hannah Bartos, Owen Warren, Fisher
Bartos, Tom Juffer, Alexis Sejnoha,
Michael Strom, Gabby Keiser, Kendra
Hunhoff and Eric Tollefson.
Pope Francis celebrated his first Easter
in front of 250,000 people who overflowed St. Peter’s Square. He pleaded
for world peace and remembered the
world’s needy people. Francis has
repeatedly put his concern for the poor
and suffering at the center of his messages
April 3Kelsie Thoreson, teen court coordinator
for the Boys and Girls Club of Yankton,
Moody and Brookings County, recently
brought the program to Yankton. Teen
court allows juvenile offenders to admit
guilt in the cases in order to have their
juvenile record cleared. The program
seeks to lower re-offender rates among
juveniles.
April 4Long-time journalist Hod Nielsen has
passed away at age 92. He was one of
Yankton’s most recognized World War II
veterans. He had countless friends and
followers including Yankton native Tom
Brokaw who feature Hod in his book
“The Greatest Generation” that honors
World War II veterans. Nielsen was a P38 pilot and was one of only seven pilots
whom in his group of 27 to survive.
Nielsen was decorated with the
Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal
with oak leaf cluster, and a President
Unit Citation. He achieved the rank of
Captain. He received numerous state
and national awards for his journalism.
He worked as the sports editor at the
Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan and
KYNT-AM sports radio broadcaster for
over 40 years. Nielsen was also known
as the voice of the Yankton Bucks and
the University of South Dakota, his alma
mater.
Roger Ebert, 70, first journalist to win a
Pulitzer prize for movie criticism, who,
on his long running TV review program,
wielded the nation’s most influential
thumb.
April 8Annette Funicello, 70, child star as a
perky Mouseketeer on “The Mickey
Mouse Club” in the 1950’s who then
teamed up with Frankie Avalon on a
string of 1960’s fun in the sun movies.
She died of complications from multiple
sclerosis.
April 9England’s former Prime Minister
Margaret Thatcher has passed away at
the age of 87. She was known as the
“Iron Lady” who ruled for 11 years, she
was the first and still only female prime
minister in Britain’s history.
April 10Charlie Gross, Brad Woerner and
Brooke Blaalid were elected during
Tuesday’s municipal election to the
Yankton City Commission. Gross and
Woerner were re-elected and Blaalid is
a newcomer to the commission. One of
the biggest issues facing the commission is the water situation, a possible
sports complex, recycling and the development of the Human Services Center
property, which is owned by the city.
Sarah Carda and Jim Fitzgerald were
elected to the two open seats on the
Yankton School Board.
April 11Jonathan Winters, 87, a comedian
whose breakneck improvisations and
misfit characters inspired people like
Robin Williams and Jim Carrey.
April 12Steve Mietz, superintendent of the
Missouri National Recreational River for
the past three years is leaving his post
to become the new superintendent at
