Erin VanMaanen of the 12th Combat Aviation Brigade performed in the Day Land Navigation during the U.S. Army Europe’s Best Warrior Competition, held recently in Grafenwoehr, Germany. She is the only woman among the nine finalists. September 7 Lewis & Clark Specialty Hospital celebrated their 10th year with an expansion with a 26,100 square foot addition. The new $4.9 million Medical Plaza, which is a separate building located near the Specialty Hospital will house the Lewis & Clark Family Medicine, Lewis & Clark Physical Therapy; Ear, Nose and Throat Associates, PC; Yankton Surgical Associates, PC; Shindler Foot Clinic, Lewis & Clark Urology, Ltd and the Lewis & Clark full service laboratory. Dr. Scott Shindler dedicated a light sculpture in memory of his late wife Karen. September 8 A Mosas fossil was unearthed last week near Santee, Nebraska. Local students had the opportunity to view the dig site and hear a paleontologist tell about the fossil. The fossil was 75 million years old. September 14 Amber Tacke and Jase Likness were named the Yankton High School Pioneer Princess and Prince during the Yankton High School Homecoming activities. Other candidates included Kelsey Fitzgerald, Mikala Hora, Maria Binder, Sarah Santos, Frae Binder, Dustin Dvorak, Michael Rucker, John Fanta, Kellen Soulek and James Hisek. September 15 Jackie Quinn was recently named the new Yankton Area Arts executive director, taking over for Amy Miner who left to teach at Yankton High School. September 17 Ted Nugent “Kids Kamp” offers a taste of outdoor fun. Nearly 300 people turned out over the weekend for a day of outdoor activities and instruction at the camp in Yankton. Activities included archery, air rifles, trap shooting, fishing, and sling shots, geo-caching and other things. September 19 Yankton is celebrating the 40th year for the Old Time Fiddle Contest & Jamboree, that was founded by Wilbur Foss, this weekend. September 21 Baldwin Filters of Yankton is planning a $28 million expansion at their Yankton facility. Baldwin Filters is a member of the Franklin, Tennessee based Clarcor organization that manufactures mobile, industrial and environmental filtrations products, and consumer and industrial packaging products sold in domestic and international markets. September 25 Silky voice and clean-cut crooner Andy Williams has died at the age of 84. He had hit records such as “Moon River” and many popular Christmas shows. September 28 Laurie Larsen and her fellow Patches band members will be inducted into the Nebraska Country Music Hall of Fame in October. Patches is an all girl country band that was formed in 1977. October 5 Frank Fritz of The History Channel’s hit series “American Pickers” spoke to a crowd of approximately 160 people Thursday at the NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Complex in Yankton during the inaugural Wire Me Awake conference. Scott Kooistra of Yankton has submitted a bid for Yankton to host the Grand National Cribbage Tournament in 2015. He will serve as the director. The tournament draws more than 300 players from 30 states. October 8 Yankton native Alyssa Van Meeteren was crowned Miss Dakota 2012 at the University of South Dakota’s homecoming football game. Mister Dakota was Brennan Tjelemland of Blair, Nebraska. Yankton natives Tom and Meredith Brokaw were the parade marshals. October 10 Yankton native Laura Johnson who graduated from Yankton High School in 2008 and attended the University of Oregon is set to begin a two year volunteer service with the Peace Corps in Lesotho, a tiny nation locate is southern Africa. October 12 In recognition of her con- tributions to the field of women’s health, Dr. Mary Milroy was recently given the 2012 Spirit of Dakota Award. The Spirit of Dakota Society, a non-profit organization, gives the annual award to a South Dakota woman who has made outstanding contributions to her community and state. The announcement was made during a ceremony held Oct. 6 in Huron.
