Yankton voters have once
again defeated the opt-out.
The Yankton School District
will be forced to drastically
cut the budget for the 20122013 school year. Voters
were asked to approve a
two year opt out to help
restore funding cuts lost
through state funding. There
was a 32% voter turnout.
The measure was defeated
58% to 42%.

The South Dakota State
Jackrabbit men’s basketball
team has earned their first
NCAA tournament bid and
the women claim their fourth
straight trip. The game will
be broadcast on ESPN2.
They are the first school in
the country this year to
qualify both the men and
women’s team.

A plea bargain has been
reached in the Nicholas
Hines case. Hines had originally been charged with
first-degree murder in connection with the first-degree
murder of 25 year old
Brianna Knoll of Yankton. He
had pleaded not guilty by
reason of insanity. As part of
the plea agreement the
charge was downgraded to
first-degree manslaughter, a
Class C felony punishable by
up to life in prison and/or a
$50,000 fine.

The Yankton Sack Pack
Program has reached their
goal of raising $25,000 for
the program. Mike Huether,
mayor of Sioux Falls, along
with his wife, Cindy
announced that they would
match up to $25,000 for the
program. The Huethers are
natives of Yankton. The program provides meals to students who have nutritional
needs.
Yankton is hosting the
South Dakota Special
Olympics State Basketball
Tournament this weekend.

couple has been arrested
for the October 2010 fire that
destroyed two businesses in
downtown Springfield, SD
including the couple’s steakhouse and damaged a third
one. Charles and Kim
Johnson are each charged
with second-degree arson
and reckless burning.

Twenty years ago yesterday Tammy Haas’ life ended.
The Yankton girl would have
been 39 years old. The incident is still surrounded by
mystery and painful memories. Her death is still
unsolved to this day.

Lt. Governor Matt
Michels of Yankton has
changed his position from
full-time to part-time.
Governor Dennis Daugaard
announced the change yesterday in a press release.
The status was due to personal and family reasons.

“American Bandstand”
host and rock n roll legend
Dick Clark died yesterday at
the age of 82. He was known
as “the world’s oldest
teenager”. He hosted New
Years Eve for four decades
for ABC from Times Square.

The Yankton Walmart
won the Supercenter of the
Year award for 2011. There
are 3,029 Walmart
Supercenters nationwide.
Yankton manager Chad Bent
was presented the award at
the company’s annual meeting last month in Orlando,
Florida.
Mount Marty College will
induct four new members
into the 2012 MMC Athletic
Hall of Fame. New members
include Dr. Richard Lofthus,

and Teresa (Ellis) Jensen.
The induction ceremony will
