Andersom taught in the Yankton School District for 46 years. Anderson also guided students as the advisor for the “Woksape” from 1963 to 2008. December 2012 December 3 The YankTON Challenge held their award ceremony honoring the businesses and individuals who lost the most weight. December 8 Yankton School District Superintendent Joe Gertsema will resign from his position effective at the end of the school year after 22 years. Gertsema said the October incident in which he was charged with driving under the influence in Vermillion was not the reason for his resignation and did not play into his decision. Brian Gustad of Yankton will be taking over the Yankton County Highway Superintendent position on December 17th. Gustad replaces Alan Sorensen who is retiring after 19 years in the position. December 12 The Yankton Missouri River KOA Campgrounds of America was recently awarded the 2012 KOA President’s and Founder’s awards, this is the highest honor campgrounds can receive. The award was presented at the KOA annual International Convention held in Orlando, Florida in November. Darwin Jans of Yankton was indicted for second degree murder in connection with the death of Larry Goodman of Yankton. In addition to the murder charge he is also charged with aggravated assault. On September 19th Yankton police officers responded to an incident at the Sir Charles Apartments in downtown Yankton they found Goodman unresponsive as a result of an apparent assault. November 15 Jessica Albers won the title of Miss South Dakota USA. She won the title at the state pageant held Sunday, Nov. 4 at the Brandon Valley Performing Arts Center in Brandon. She will represent South Dakota in the Miss USA pageant. November 17 The football rivalry between South Dakota State University in Brookings and the University of South Dakota in Vermillion has been renewed with the battle between the two schools today at the football game starting at 2:00 p.m. this is the first football game since 2003. November 23 Larry Hagman who portrayed oil baron J.R. Ewing on the television series “Dallas” has died at the age of 81. November 24 Amy Nelson has been hired to be the new City Manager for the City of Yankton. She will begin her duties in January 2013. She has served as the city manager of Canton for the last four years. Sister Mary Arthur Schramm, a Benedictine sister from Yankton, was recently named a living legend by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. She is a native of Siegel and has been a member of Sacred Heart Monastery since 1952. November 29 The Bloomfield Nebraska junior-senior high school was recently named a “National Blue Ribbon School” by Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman. The award is for academic excellence; Bloomfield is one of five schools in Nebraska chosen for the U.S. Department of Education honor. November 30 Former South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds announced yesterday that he will challenge Senator Tim Johnson in the 2014 U.S. House race.
