born in Bon-Homme County
and raised in Avon, SD. He
was also known for his
advocacy for world nutrition,

helped lead the uprising at
Wounded Knee in 1973 has
died at the age of 72.

Donald Moeller who was
twice convicted and sentence to die for killing 9 year
old Becky O’Connell in 1990
was executed by lethal
injection last night at the
South Dakota State
Penitentiary in Sioux Falls.

With the roof restoration
phase for the historic Mead
Building renovation nearing
completion, the Yankton
County Historical Society
(YCHS) is making plans for
the next step of the project.
Renovations on the 103year-old building and future
home of the Dakota
Territorial Museum began
this summer. With the roof
nearly complete, the YCHS is
now turning its attention to
the repair or replacement of
the nearly 250 windows on
the three floors and basement of the building. To pay
for the restoration of the

Richard “Dick” Anderson
died Wednesday November
28 at the age of 72.
Andersom taught in the
Yankton School District for
46 years. Anderson also
guided students as the advisor for the “Woksape” from
1963 to 2008.

Yankton School District
Superintendent Joe
Gertsema will resign from
his position effective at the
end of the school year after
22 years. Gertsema said the
October incident in which he
was charged with driving
under the influence in
Vermillion was not the reason for his resignation and
did not play into his decision.
Brian Gustad of Yankton
will be taking over the
Yankton County Highway
Superintendent position on
December 17th. Gustad
replaces Alan Sorensen who
is retiring after 19 years in
the position.

The Yankton Missouri
River KOA Campgrounds of
America was recently
awarded the 2012 KOA
President’s and Founder’s
awards, this is the highest
honor campgrounds can
receive. The award was presented at the KOA annual
International Convention
held in Orlando, Florida in
November.
Darwin Jans of Yankton
was indicted for second
degree murder in connection with the death of Larry
Goodman of Yankton. In
addition to the murder
charge he is also charged
with aggravated assault. On
September 19th Yankton
police officers responded to
an incident at the Sir
Charles Apartments in
downtown Yankton they
found Goodman unresponsive as a result of an apparent assault.

USA. She won the title at the
state pageant held Sunday,
Nov. 4 at the Brandon Valley
Performing Arts Center in

between South Dakota State
University in Brookings and
the University of South
Dakota in Vermillion has
been renewed with the battle between the two schools
today at the football game
starting at 2:00 p.m. this is
the first football game since

Larry Hagman who portrayed oil baron J.R. Ewing
on the television series
“Dallas” has died at the age
of 81.

Amy Nelson has been
hired to be the new City
Manager for the City of
Yankton. She will begin her
duties in January 2013. She
has served as the city manager of Canton for the last
four years.
Sister Mary Arthur
Schramm, a Benedictine sister from Yankton, was
recently named a living legend by the American
Association of Nurse
Anesthetists. She is a
native of Siegel and has
been a member of Sacred
Heart Monastery since 1952.

The Bloomfield Nebraska
junior-senior high school
was recently named a
“National Blue Ribbon
School” by Nebraska
Governor Dave Heineman.
The award is for academic
excellence; Bloomfield is
one of five schools in
Nebraska chosen for the
U.S. Department of
Education honor.

Former South Dakota
Governor Mike Rounds
announced yesterday that
he will challenge Senator
Tim Johnson in the 2014 U.S.
House race. Rounds served
as governor from 2003-2011,
while Johnson, a native of
Vermillion has been in the
Senate since 1996.
