The Lancers qualify for the NAIA Opening Round Tournament to be held in Oklahoma City, OK. The Yankton Menards held their grand opening over the weekend. The Menards store will be hosting several celebrities and activities throughout the week as part of their grand opening celebrities. May 10 The discharges at Gavins Point Dam were halted yesterday so officials from the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers could inspect the structure for any damaged caused by the record flooding last summer. May 12 Lewis & Clark Resort near the Marina just got bigger. Owners Jeff and Judy Wahl recently opened the new 4,000 square foot lodge. The resort currently features 24 hotel rooms, 17 modern two and three bedroom cabins and an outdoor swimming pool. The Yankton City Commission is discussing the possibility of purchasing property on the Human Services Center property. The 36 acres of ground is located on the southeast corner of the HSC campus and the intersection of Highway 81 and 50. The property is valued at $1.95 million. May 15 Nancy Wenande was elected the new Mayor of Yankton. Nancy is the second woman to hold this position. The first was current state Senator Jean Hunhoff, who was mayor from 19951997. May 16 Doug Winstead is retiring after 22 years with the Yankton School District. He knows he has changed the way students go about recycling. He started recycling projects three years ago for the Technical Education lab. Hartington Cedar Catholic alumni Russ Hochstein presented his alma mater Hartington Cedar Catholic High School with a Hochstein graduated in 1996. He has maintained close ties with his alma mater. Former Republican U.S. Senator Jim Abdnor has died he was 89. He ousted George McGovern from the Senate, only to lose his seat after one term. May 17 Donna Summer, Queen of Disco whose songs such as “Last Dance” has died, she was 63 years old. May 18 Dave and Brenda Spencer have been chosen the 2012 Riverboat Days Captain and Belle. The Spencers and their family have been involved with Riverboat Days for years. May 20 Robin Gibb, part of the “Bee Gees” has died at the age of 62. They had such hits as “Stayin’ Alive” and Night Fever”. May 23 Nancy Saunders has been named the United Way Volunteer of the Year for her involvement with organizations such as 4-H, soccer, basketball, Meals on Wheels, Big Friend-Little Friend and others. May 24 The Viborg and Hurley High Schools are celebrating their last high school graduations. Hurley has only four graduating seniors. The Viborg-Hurley districts will merge on July 1st. May 25 Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees died on Sunday after a long battle with cancer. He co-founded the Bee Gees in 1958 with his brother Barry and Maurice. They helped define disco in the 1970’s. May 26 Airbrush artist Mickey Harris recently painted a new sign for Yankton’s Modern Body Shop. The sign portrays Ray and Darrell Livingston’s restored cars. The sign is on the south side of the building located at 212 Douglas Ave. May 30 The United States Post Office located in Mission Hill, SD will remain open following a new decision for USPS not to proceed with some of its closings. June 2012 June 4 Yankton will be hosting the 2012 State Fire School this weekend. There will be a parade, hose races, and learning events. The public is encouraged to attend. Family Feud host Richard Dawson dies at the age of 79 from complications related to cancer. He made his mark on the 1960’s sitcom hit “Hogan’s Heroes.” The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers has found an “anomaly” under the concrete apron in front of the Gavins Point Dam spillway, but they are unsure what the source of the issue may be. A Yankton man who pleaded guilty in March to killing his girlfriend in 2011 received a 200-year sentence to a state penitentiary Thursday with 100 years suspended.
