June 28 Avon teacher Paul Kuhlman was recently honored as the recipient of the Presidential Award for Math and Science Teaching. Kuhlman teaches math and science at both the middle and high school. He receives a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation and will attend an award ceremony and several events in Washington, D.C. June 29 Mount Marty College has announced a $150,000 gift for a botanical laboratory from the Otto Ullrich Trust Fund. The lab will be known as the Otto Ullrich Memorial Botanical Laboratory. July 21 12 people were killed and 59 wounded in a shooting in an Aurora, Colorado movie theatre. The theatre was featuring a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises”. The gunman was identified as 24 year old James Holmes. July 23 Sally Ride who blazed the trail as the first American woman in space has died of pancreatic caner she was 61. July 25 Yankton welcomed the United States 2012 Paralympics Archery team earlier this week to begin their final training for competition at the Olympics being held in London next month. Sherman Hemsley who portrayed the character “George Jefferson on “The Jeffersons” died at the age of 74. August 2012 August 1 Michael Hampton, the Yankton postmaster for the last 13 years is retiring after a 29 year career with the United State Postal Service. A retirement party will be held next week at Ben’s in downtown Yankton. August 9 Sanford Health announces a $20 million donation for a new athletic arena at the University of South Dakota. The basketball and volleyball arena will seat 6,000 people. Sanford will also continue to serve as the exclusive sports medicine provider for USD for the next 15 years. August 17 Brenda and Dave Spencer are the 2012 Captain and Belle for this year’s Riverboat Days celebration in Yankton. Yankton’s Riverboat Days summer celebration had an autumn feel to it this year, which helped bring thousands of people out for the festivities. August 18 Mark Kalch a kayaker originally hails from Australia and now lives in London with his girlfriend and their two young children. Now a half-world away from his family, Kalch pulled into Yankton on Thursday as a stop on his journey covering the entire Missouri-Mississippi river system. “My goal is to kayak the longest river on each continent, which has never been done before,” he said. “I kayaked the Amazon, which was the longest river in South America, and now I am traveling the MissouriMississippi river system, which is the longest in North America. Eventually, I want to take on the seven rivers in seven continents.” August 20 Phyllis Diller, housewife turned humorist has died at the age of 95. She poked fun at herself with her trademark cackle. August 21 Lauren Hanson has accepted the position as the new United Way and Volunteer Services of Greater Yankton. She replaces Pam Kettering who is retiring on December 31st. August 23 The Tri-State Old Iron Antique Tractor Association will be taking part in a parade at the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island next week that will attempt to set the world record of the longest tractor parade. The current record was set in Germany in 2008. August 25 Neil Armstrong who became a global hero as the astronaut who made “one giant leap for mankind” with a small step onto the moon has died at the age of 82. Last year there was record flooding on the Missouri River that severely damaged Larson’s Landing RV Park west of Yankton. Today they are re-opening the park. August 29 Wally Bosch who recently retired from the Yankton School District has found a new home with the St. Rose School in Crofton, Nebraska. He accepted the position of the school administrator.
