The death toll keeps rising
in Joplin, Missouri. This was
the nations deadliest tornado in
more than 60 years. The estimate number of injured is more
than 900. The death toll stands
at 125.
U.S. Army Corp officials
continue to make adjustments
to the regulation of the Missouri
River. The gates of the Gavin’s
Point dam are open and releasing up to 60,000 cu.ft. Per second and will start raising up the
flow to 85,000 cu. Ft. per second
on June 3rd. The record release
of the dam stands at 70,000 in
1997.

Yankton based Charlie
Battery has been activated to
help fight flooding in the Pierre
and Fort Pierre area. The alert
went out for 300 soldiers with
the 147th Field Artillery
Battalion and the 139th Brigade
Support Battalion of the South
Dakota National Guard.
Judge Arthur Rusch of the
First Judicial Court is retiring
from the bench on June 8th. He
has been doing this job for 17 ½
years now and decided it is
time to do something different.
Rusch lives in Vermillion with
his wife Lana and they have
four grown children.

St. John’s Lutheran Church
was named one of the winners
of the 2011 Department of
Defense Freedom Award. The
award is given to employers for
exceptional support of their
employees serving in the Guard
and Reserve. St. John’s is the
first church to win the award.
The Reverend Dave Gunderson,
pastor of St. John’s Lutheran
Church nominated them for the
award. He just returned a
month ago from Afghanistan.
The Army Corp of Engineers
has announced that Gavins
Point Dam is releasing 78,000
cubic feet per second. The
South Dakota Army National
Guard and the Federal Bureau
of Prisons will be helping fill
sandbags.

years old today. The paper was

after 36 years. Hisek became
the assistant chief in the mid
1990’s.

Avera Sacred Heart
Hospital announced yesterday
that it would contribute $750,000
to Mount Marty College to help
fund the new educational facilities. The proposed Avera
Science Laboratory will be part
of the college’s new healthcare
and science center.

hosted by the Yankton Area
Chamber of Commerce and the

Robert Heine, a graduate of
Yankton High School received a
check for $1,000 as the winner
of the P.A.Y. Scholarship. The
Jim & Sharon Petrik Family was
chosen as Family of the Year.

in the nation at the National
History Day competition held n

Yankton/Mission Hill author
& historian Bob Karolevitz died
Friday, June 17, he was 89. He
was the author of 37 books and
more than 3,000 columns and
well as a host of many other
articles. He was inducted into
the South Dakota Newspaper
Hall of Fame in 1996 and the
South Dakota Hall of Fame in
1986. He was also named
Yankton’s “Citizen of the Year”
in 1997. He wrote columns for
the Yankton Daily Press &
Dakotan and the Vermillion
Plaintalk. Some of his books
include “Yankton: A Pioneer
Past” and Yankton: The Way It
Was”. His wife Phyllis, daughters Jill and Jan, son-in-law
Patrick and grandson Sam survive Bob.

District teacher Judy
Tereshinski was honored as the
Yankton School District Teacher
Of The Year. By the Yankton
Education Association.
Tereshinski has been a teacher
for 41 years.

Herndon performed at the
Dakota Theater last night, this is
his first visit to Yankton and is
part of a 16-day national tour.

legislators cannot agree on a
budget. The shutdown ends up
lasting for three weeks.

Dam spillway are at a record
160,000 cubic feet per second
and are expected to stay there
through into the month of
August.
Jim and Sharon Petrik have
been named the Yankton area
Farm Family Of The Year. The
Petrik Farm is located between
Gayville and Volin near old
Highway 50; they live in the
same house that Jim grew up
in. The Petriks have four children ages 9 to 20.

In Orlando, Florida a jury
finds Casey Anthony not guilty
of murder, manslaughter, and
child abuse in the 2008 disappearance and death of her twoyear-old daughter Caylee.

Private funds have been
raised to keep Yankton Middle
School extracurricular activities
from being eliminated. Football,
volleyball, cross country, basketball, wrestling, track and oral
interpretation programs for 7th
and 8th graders would have
been eliminated due the a $1.2
million budget cuts for the 20112012 school year.

One of Yankton’s most recognized voices has come home.
Scott Kooistra, who was the
voice of KYNT radio from 1985
to 2000, has returned to KYNT
and to Yankton as sports director and host of the AM station’s
