Visker was the featured speaker during last night’s inaugural
Candlelight Vigil to honor victims of domestic violence that
was held at the Yankton County
4-H Grounds. During the event a
candle was also lit in honor of
Brianna Knoll of Yankton who
was killed in April during an
alleged act of domestic violence.

cropland in Cedar County,
Nebraska burned yesterday
afternoon. The warm and windy
weather along with the dry conditions on the ground helped
fuel the blaze. More than 11
communities in two states

The Yankton Fire
Department will be hosting an
Open House during National
Fire Prevention Week. They will
also unveil the “Ground Zero
Monument”/ The Yankton Fire
Department is one of 2 or 3 in
the state to have been selected
to receive a piece from Ground
Zero through an application

A Yankton man was killed
yesterday after a pickup slipped
out of gear and rolled down the
river embankment, killing him.
Edward Metter, 65, was killed in
the incident downstream from
Gavins Point Dam.

Sgt. James Dvorak of
Yankton won the non-commissioned Officer of the Year competition for the state of South
Dakota. He now advances to
the Region 6 “Best Warrior”
competition next June in Idaho.

A house fire overnight left
three people homeless in
Yankton. An early morning fire
at the Don and Vi Heimes residence at 2001 Locust was
declared a total loss. No
injuries were reported.

Moammar Gadhafi was
killed in a battle in his hometown of Sirte, Libya. He was the
leader of Libya for more than 40
years. His death came two
months after he was driven
from power and into hiding. The
U.S. had briefly led the relentless NATO bombing campaign
that sealed Gadhafi’s fate,
Washington later took on a secondary role and Britain and
France said they hoped his
death would lead to a more
democratic Libya.

vowed to hold public forums
about the possibility of the
school district pursuing a second opt-out attempt before the
end of the calendar year.
A 7.2 magnitude earthquake
killed at least 279 people in
Ercis, Turkey over the weekend

A South Dakota inmate was
sentenced to death yesterday
for killing a prison guard by
bashing him with a pipe, covering his mouth with plastic wrap
and then wearing the dead
man’s uniform during an
attempt to escape. Second
Circuit Judge Bradley Zell, sentenced him to die by lethal
injection.
The St. Louis Cardinals
defeated the Texas Rangers in
Game 7 of the World Series.

Bradley Zell sentenced Eric
Robert, 49, to death, one day
after Robert told Judge Zell he
regretted not killing another
officer or that he will kill again.
Robert plead guilty to bashing
63-year-old Ronald Johnson
with a pipe on April 12, he also
covered his mouth with wrap
and wore the dead officers uniform in a failed escape attempt.
A white “Halloween” storm
with record setting snowfalls hit
the northeastern part of the
United States, knocking out
power to millions, and 39
deaths were blamed on the
storm.

The Yankton Guard Unit has
been know as Charlie Battery
for the last 43 years, it was
recently announced that effective September of 2012, it will
be known as first battalion
147th infantry, Bravo Battery.
The South Dakota Peace
and Justice Center recently
honored Father Leonard Kayser
of Yankton for a lifetime of work
and influence. Kayser who has
been an ordained Catholic
priest for the past 52 years has
been involved with the social
justice system since it began in
the 1970’s.

Former Governor William
Janklow has been diagnosed
with brain cancer. Janklow, 72,
a Republican who dominated
politics in South Dakota for
more than a quarter of a century said that the cancer is
aggressive and he is undergoing treatment at the Mayo Clinic
in Rochester, MN.

Thousands of protesters
gathered in Washington, DC to
oppose the plan for a transnational oil pipeline that they fear
could harm the environment.
The crowd gathered around the
White House at one point wanting to pressure President
Obama and his administration
on deciding whether or not to
approve the massive Keystone
project.
A Los Angeles, California
jury convicted Michael
Jackson’s doctor, Conrad
Murray of involuntary
manslaughter for supplying an
anesthetic implicated in the
Jackson’s death.
Former heavyweight champion boxer, Joe Frazier died at
the age of 87.

District is raising funds to build
a new track facility. School officials and organizers announced
