Eric Robert and Rodney Berget, will be charged with first degree murder and felony murder following the death of Ronald Johnson. April 18 More than 45 people are dead after more than 60 tornadoes ripped across the southern part of the United States. More than 240 tornadoes were reported to the National Weather Service in the last three days. April 21 Colton Iverson of Yankton, has chosen to head to Colorado State University for his senior year. He will have to sit out the 2011-2012-basketball season due to transfer rules. April 26 Kyle Bender of Yankton has missing since December, his body has been found in the river. Authorities confirmed Monday that the body found is that of the missing Yankton man. Bender was last seen at his mother’s home on December 11. A friend near the boat ramp in Riverside Park found clothing and a cell phone believed to be his in mid February. Nicholas Hines, 28, of Yankton has been transferred to Yankton from a Sioux Falls hospital; he is accused of shooting Brianna Knoll, 25, of Yankton during a murder-suicide attempt. Hines has been charged with first-degree murder. April 28 President Barack Obama has release his birth certificate to the press hoping to end the controversy on the place of his birth. Obama was born in Hawaii and released the certificate hoping to end the controversy over whether or not he is eligible to hold office. President Barack Obama has chosen Leon Panetta to lead the defense department. Panetta was chosen to replace Robert Gates. April 29 Holly Hoffman of “Survivor” came to Yankton last night to celebrate and speak at the Yankton’s Celebrate Women Celebration held each year. Hoffman, of Eureka, SD was trying to discover herself, long before she spent nearly 40 days in a Nicaraguan rain forest. Killer tornadoes continue to rip across the Southern part of the United States. More than 290 people in eight states have died. It is the nation’s deadliest tornado outbreak in almost forty years. Great Britain’s Prince William and Kate Middleton wed at London’s Westminster Abby. William is the son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana. William is second in line to the throne. May 2011 May 2 Osama bin Laden is dead. President Obama said, “Justice has been done”. There has been a global manhunt that has lasted nearly a decade. He was killed in an operation lead by the United States. May 4 Dr. Tom and Jane Gilmore were named Yankton Volunteers of the Year for 2010. They do so much volunteer work for the community and Dr. Gilmore has taken care of more babies and mothers on the reservation during his medical career, so he knows the conditions that need to be met. Lori Christensen, Cedar Catholic High School teacher has been named “Secondary Teacher of the Year” for the Omaha Arch diocese’s rural schools. The award honors individuals who have given exemplary service in the Catholic Schools for the Omaha Archdiocese. She will receive $5,000 for this award. May 7 Father Tim Lange will be celebrating his 50th year of ordination as a Roman Catholic Priest. A celebration will be held on May 29th in Menominee, NE with a 10:00am mass with a concert and dinner and open house to follow. The Mount Marty College Choir has been offered a contract by a California label for worldwide distribution of a compact disc. Jack Donahue, Chris Fischer and Jaime Kulbel will be entered into the Yankton High School Athletic Hall of fame. The recognition banquet is at 6:30pm on May 12th. Donahue was a member of the YHS class of 1944. He has had a long coaching career in Pickstown and Onida; he retired from teaching and coaching in 1987. Fischer is a member of the YHS Class of 1994. He still holds the school record in the 100, 200 and 400. Fischer is an associate professor or radiology and course director the radiology education program at the Sanford School of Medicine at the University of South Dakota. Kulbel was a member of the YHS Class of 1995. Kulbel was the first state cross-country champion in the Yankton girl’s history and helped lead the Gazelles to the 1995 state title. She is currently working on a nursing degree at the University of Wisconsin. May 9 Brooks and Joan Schild of Yankton have been selected as Captain and Belle of Riverboat Days. The event will be held on August 19-21. May 10 The Yankton City Commission welcomed two new members Jake Hoffner and Craig Sommer, Nancy Wenande was also reelection for a third term and David Knoff will serve a second term as mayor. Outgoing members Duke Ellingson served for 21 years and Judy VanDerhule served nine years. May 12 Gas prices jumped more than 25¢ overnight. The cost is now over $4 per gallon. There are fears that flooding on the Mississippi River will disrupt refineries. Jason Schmidt of Mount Marty College has been named the GPAC Player of the Year of Baseball. The Lancers also had three other players earn All GPAC Honorable mention; they are Jared Miller, Dillon Lambley and Jason Livermont. May 17 The Hovden log cabin that is located next to the Dakota Territorial Museum is being restored in time for Yankton 150th celebration. Preservationist Gary Barker is restoring the cabin and is using the same type of material and tools that were used when Norwegian immigrants built the cabin 150 years ago. May 18 Minnesota Twins fans are mourning the loss of Harmon Killebrew, 74, who died of esophageal cancer yesterday. He hit 573 home runs and still ranks 11th on the all time list. May 20 Freeman attorney Cheryle Wiedmeier-Gering will become the new judge in the First Circuit next month. She is a native of Menno, SD. She will replace retiring Judge Arthur Rusch of Vermillion. May 21 Jesse Bicknell will be a member of the YHS Class of 11 2011 but he will not just be receiving a diploma this weekend he will also be receiving his pilot’s license. He has been taking flying lesson since he was 16. He plans to join the Air Force as part of its military police canine unit late this year. May 23 A deadly tornado ripped through Joplin, Missouri this weekend. This was the nations deadliest tornado in more than 60 years. The twister also damaged St. John’s Regional Medical Center. Many are dead and missing. Another tornado ripped through Minneapolis, Minnesota and An Open House was held to honor the 90th birthday of Howard “Hod” Nielsen. Nielsen was a longtime print and broadcast journalist, local businessman, and athletic and education booster.
