Today marks the 10th
anniversary of 9/11/01 attacks
on the World Trade Center, the
Pentagon. There will be a dedication of the 9/11 Museum. The
mission of the Memorial
Museum, located at the World
Trade Center site, is to bear
solemn witness to the terrorist
attacks of September 11, 2001
and February 26, 1993. At the
memorial visitors first walk
though a line of more than 200
white oak trees, then they
arrive at two 30 foot deep pits
on the exact spot where the
World Trade Center twin towers
stood to water cascading into
two voids, evoking a dust cloud
that accompanied the towers’
fall.

After more than a century,
Jacob Franklin Kinna no longer
lies in anonymity. The Civil War
veteran, who died of blood poisoning in 1893 after receiving a
gunshot wound, had been
buried in an unmarked grave at
the Yankton Cemetery. That
changed last week thanks to
researchers with the South
Dakota State Historical Society.
The occasion was commemorated Saturday with a memorial
service.
The headstone issued by
the U.S. Department of
Veterans Affairs and inscribed
“SERGT. J.F. KINNA, CO.C.
12OHIO.CAV.,” was discovered
at a Warner home in 1979 and
was eventually relegated to a
basement, where it stayed for
32 years. Finally, Brown County
Centennial Village in Aberdeen
became the caretaker of the
stone, and it was included in its
mock cemetery. Veterans in the
Aberdeen area became inter-
ested in the headstone and
decided to find out where it
belonged. They contacted the
State Historical Society, where
Carpenter and Virginia Hanson
took up the effort.
Yankton’s Stockmen’s
Livestock Market is celebrating
their 50th year in business. Gail
Sohler said he isn’t sure how he
survived the first three years
and created a successful enterprise. Gail and his wife, Janet,
purchased a decrepit livestock
facility along East Highway 50
that had almost no business. He
would eventually serve as
national president of the
Livestock Marketing
Association. The business is a
family affair, Sohler explained.
Aside from his wife, Sohler’s
son, Jay, and daughter, Lori, are
also involved in the operation.
Furthermore, many of the key
individuals at the market have
been employed there for
decades, said Sohler. Third and
fourth generations of families
are now doing business with
Stockmen’s and have become
part of an extended family.
Duane Haberman, who has
worked at Stockmen’s for 46
years, said that is exactly how
he feels about the company’s
customers.
