President Barack Obama
has ordered his administration
to stop defending the constitutionality of a federal law that
bans recognition of gay marriage; a policy reversal would

rights and benefits of gays.
Oil prices are skyrocketing
they topped $100 a barrel yesterday. The national average
was $3.19. This is 53¢ more than
a year ago. Analysts expect
between $32.5 and $3.75 this
spring.

Dakota Territory will be celebrating their 150th birthday on
March 2. On March 2, 1861
President James Buchanan
signed into existence Dakota
Territory. The territory included
what is now North and South
Dakota, Montana and
Wyoming. Yankton was named
the capital.

Boller Printing had recently
notified the school that it would
be ending their 50-year print
relationship due to unforeseen
circumstances at the business.
Instead of the school paying for
the printing of the paper it will
be published in the Press &
Dakotan and will be supported
by advertising dollars.
An Open House was held
yesterday honoring the 90th
birthday of Howard “Hod”
Nielsen. It was held at the
Walnut Village. Nielsen was a
longtime print and broadcast
journalist, local businessman,
and athletic and education
booster. The event also included a program that featured
remarks by several of his
friends, as well as a recorded
message from Tom Brokaw,
who featured Nielsen in his
book “The Greatest
Generation.”

Chris A. Miller of Scotland,
SD is facing murder and
manslaughter charges relating
to the death of his four-monthold son Jacob. Miller, 37, will
appear in court today. Jacob
Miller died earlier this week at
a Sioux Falls hospital.
Gayville Postmaster Dick
Fuhrer is retiring after 48 years
with the USPS. He has been
the postmaster in Gayville for
the last 31 years.

Yankton is set to host the
first ever Special Olympics
South Dakota State Basketball
Tournament this weekend.
Approximately 500 Special
Olympians are expected to participate said Yankton area coordinator Jan Putnam.
A powerful 8.9 earthquake
hit Japan yesterday. The earthquake spawned a deadly tsunami. Hundreds of people are
killed and missing. The death
toll is expected to rise. People
in Hawaii were also bracing for
a tsunami, which is moving at
500 mph. across the Pacific.
Japanese officials said they are
also having radiation problems
inside the damaged nuclear
power plant.

The Yankton School District
is mulling an opt-out. The state
of South Dakota passed an 8.6
percent cut in the per student
allocation. The total deficit for
the district’s general fund is an
estimated $3.2 million.

The Yankton School District
passed a resolution for a $4.175
million per year opt-out for the
school district. Jason Bietz
said that the board chose to opt
out of the school tax levy limitations, which effectively gives
them enough revenue for the
next five years, which is based
on the current projections.
There has been a third
explosion in four days at the
nuclear power plant in Japan.
Japanese officials say the radiation levels at the plant are
within safe limits. International
scientists are worried there
could be another Chernobyl
incident like what happened in
1986 in the Ukraine.

Chris A. Miller, 37, of
Scotland was indicted yesterday on murder and manslaughter charges related to the death
of his four month old son Jacob.
Miller was indicted on tow
alternative counts: second
degree murder, a Class B felony
with a mandatory penalty of life
in prison, and first degree
manslaughter, a Class C felony
with a maximum penalty of life
in prison.

Applied Engineering of
Yankton expects their new
25,000 square foot expansion to
be completed by the end of the
year. Tom Bohnet of Applied
Engineering said the new addition is necessary to keep up
with the growing demands of
customers.
Former U.S. Secretary of
State Warren M. Christopher
died at the age of 85.

Twenty-seven members of
the Yankton High School
National History Day competition are moving on to represent
the school at the state competition in Brookings in April. This
year is the largest group ever to
advance from the school.

SD Governor Dennis
Daugaard signed into law that
women in SD who want an
abortion will have to face a
three-day waiting period. This is
the longest waiting period in
the nation. The women would
also have to undergo counseling at pregnancy help centers.
SD Supreme Court Justice
Judith Meierhenry has
announced her retirement for
the bench. She will officially
retire in June. Meierhenry, 67,
was appointed to the bench by
then Governor William Janklow
in November 2002.
Oscar winning actress
Elizabeth Taylor has died at the
age of 79.

Former Vice-Presidential
candidate Geraldine Ferraro
has died at the age of 75. She
was the first female major party
nominee.

The Yankton community
turned out in full force for the
Yankton School Board meeting
on the opt-out. The board read
the names of the 22 teachers
