Morgan Goche, a junior Dairy Manufacturing major specializing in microbiology, recently represented South Dakota State University (SDSU) in Washington, D.C. as one of the 20 undergraduate recipients of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Outlook Forum Student Diversity Program Award. A native of Bancroft, Iowa, Goche grew up on a diversified operation where her father and brother raise corn, soybeans and beef cattle. Goche first became interested in the USDA program in 2015, which is for college juniors, seniors and graduate students from U.S. land grant universities. Each university submits two undergraduate and two graduate-level candidates to the USDA. The USDA then selects the undergraduate and 10 graduatelevel finalists. “Nutrition, food science and agricultural policy really interest me,” says Goche. The application process entailed writing an essay on “Agriculture as a Career” and providing a letter of recommendation. Goche’s essay focused on the common purpose of the agriculture industry and how this purpose can impact the global food system. “Goche is clearly a future leader in agriculture,” says Vikram Mistry, Professor and SDSU Dairy Science Department Head. The Agricultural Outlook Forum was held in late February, and Goche arrived two days prior to the forum to participate in the Student Diversity Program. The program included speakers from each area of the USDA discussing the department’s broad reach and many programs. During the Agricultural Outlook Forum, Goche and her fellow program participants attended the Forum’s seminars and panels, meeting U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and toured Washington, D.C. Goche attended sessions on Brazilian agriculture, food security, sugar and sweeteners and new agricultural markets. “I was so excited to get to go,” Goche says. “It was a really awesome week.” Goche says her dream job would be a research and development position with a dairy manufacturer. Inspired by her participation in the Agricultural Outlook Forum, she says she eventually plans to pursue a career with USDA. “I want to make food healthier,” Goche adds. At SDSU, Goche is involved in Dairy Club, Health Sciences Club and serves as a peer mentor.
