Many people aren’t aware of the MNRR and its unique role, said Stephanie Moser, director of the Yankton Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). “Every group I talk to, at least half don’t know that Yankton has a national park. We need people in the community to realize what a gem we have with a national park in our backyard,” she said. “And visitors want to visit a national park, especially for the 100th anniversary. They can plan their vacation to include a variety of national parks, with Yankton as one of them.” The newly-formed Friends of the MNRR can play a key role in terms of fundraising, education and advocacy, Moser said. In addition, courses can be offered to promote the river as a safe and fun environment. The MNRR is much more than a body of water, said Carmen Schramm, executive director of the Yankton Area Chamber of Commerce. “We’re bringing education about the river. We’re teaching the historical part that goes from pioneer to modern-day use of the river and why it’s so important that we protect it,” she said. “We also need to talk about how to enjoy the river. The water is just one part of it. We have Meridian Bridge, the trails, the parks and all that go with it.” The tourism conference and Yankton Day are crucial parts of reaching state agencies and legislators about the needs of Yankton and the Missouri River, Schramm said. The annual Chamber trip to Washington will connect the Yankton delegation with congressional members and federal agencies. “We’re proud of Yankton.
