USD Student to Train on Broadway
VERMILLION — A University of South Dakota theatre major has been accepted into this
summer’s session of the Open Jar Institute,
New York City’s most Broadway-integrated
actor training program.
Braeden Garrett, a junior from Centralia,
Washington, will be one of only 60 students
to spend a week in New York. He’ll take part
in one-on-one workshops with some of the
Garrett
Broadway’s best teaching artists, vocal
coaches, acting teachers and choreographers.
Garrett will also meet with casting directors
and agents, and get to see some of Broadway’s best shows,
interact with the casts and be part of backstage tours.
“We in the Theatre Department are thrilled for Braeden
and excited by this fantastic opportunity. We know that he
will excel in New York and are proud that he will showcase
the talent we have here at USD Theatre,” said Raimondo
Genna, interim department chair.

Duo To Teach Classical Music At School
Musicians OboeBass! will conduct workshops for local
students as part of the South Dakota Arts Council’s Artists In
Schools & Communities program. The artists will work with
Sacred Heart Elementary School students during the week of
Feb. 22-26.
Rolf Erdahl and Carrie Vecchione bring music to life for
students of all ages through their program “Pages of Music
with Rolf and Carrie.” During the residency, the musicians
demonstrate their instruments, introduce musical concepts
and history, and share literature about music to show students the creative power and sheer joy that await them in
the wild, wonderful, multifaceted world of music. The duo’s
series of original programs blends storytelling, performance,
and children’s literature about music in a memorable, engaging way.
This program is sponsored by Friends of Sacred Heart,
with support provided by the South Dakota Arts Council with
funds from the State of South Dakota, through the Department of Tourism and State Development, and the National
Endowment for the Arts.
The Bookworm ... For Kids
Get This ‘Goat’ As A
Valentine’s Gift For Kids
“Mr. Goat’s Valentine” by
Eve Bunting, illustrated by
Kevin Zimmer; © 2016, Sleeping Bear Press. 32 pages
———
BY TERRI SCHLICHENMEYER
Be Mine, Valentine.
Surrounded by pink and
red hearts, that’s what the
card said and it came from
your best classroom friend.
Another Valentine is from
your teacher, and you got one
from a kid you know on the
bus. Everybody gets Valentines on V-Day but in the new
book “Mr. Goat’s Valentine”
by Eve Bunting, illustrated by
Kevin Zimmer, some are more
special than others.
The headline in the Goat
Times was a big one. How
could Mr. Goat miss it? It was
Valentine’s Day, and he had to
find something really superspecial for his first love. She
surely deserved it. He wanted
to tell her how much she
meant to him, so Mr. Goat
put on his big straw hat and
headed out.
He didn’t go far before he
came to Miss Nanny Goat’s
“weed stall.”
Among the flowers and
plants, Miss Nanny Goat had
the perfect bouquet for Mr.
Goat to give his first love.
Everything was presented
beautifully in a rusty, dented
tin can — sticky weeds, ugly
weeds, pigweed, ragweed,
and crabgrass — and he
knew his first love would enjoy that. She was quite “fond
of a ragweed salad” and rusty
cans were yummy when you
salted them.
Mr. Goat’s nose took him
to the next place on his journey: Mr. Pygmy-Little Goat
was offering smelly rotten
eggs for sale. “Guaranteed
foul and disgusting,” he promised, so how could Mr. Goat
resist? He couldn’t, so he
bought four of them.
There were other stalls
nearby but Mr. Goat wanted
to hurry… until he came
across Miss Skunk’s pretty
pink perfume cart. Being
helpful, she spritzed Mr. Goat
with her special perfume so
he’d smell wonderful for his
first love. As he walked away,
she reminded him that he
needed a Valentine card to go
with the weeds and the rotten
eggs.
After walking a while, Mr.
Goat began to think: maybe
he did need a card to go with
everything else, but where
USD Choral Ensembles To Give
Washington Pavilion Performance
would he get one? And if he
couldn’t get one, what else
could he do? What would his
first love think?
Awwww, who needs
chocolates and roses when
you can have stinkweed and
rotten eggs for V-Day? Who
wants a bunch of sappy
cards? Your child surely
doesn’t — especially when
“Mr. Goat’s Valentine” is
already so darn sweet.
And yet, this book isn’t
sugary-smoochy. Author
Eve Bunting and illustrator
Kevin Zimmer instead allow
your child to laugh at Mr.
Goat’s taste in food and gifts.
There’s a definite sense of
“eeeuuuww” here (maybe
even about mushy-gushy
love in general), but it’s there
without giving the slightest
hint of who that “first love”
might be or what she may
think of the wonderful gifts.
By the time you get to the
end of this book, I think you’ll
both be charmed.
Kids ages 4-to-7 will get
the giggles from this book,
which makes it a just-right
substitute for candy in this
month of amour. One look
at “Mr. Goat’s Valentine” and
your child will want it to be
hers.
Utica Township Board
Annual Meeting
SIOUX FALLS — The University of South Dakota Chamber
Singers and Concert Choir have been selected to present
concerts on the American Choral Directors Association North
Central Conference Feb. 18-20 at the Washington Pavilion in
Sioux Falls, one of only five collegiate choirs in the six-state
region chosen by audition for a featured performance at the
conference.
“With so many outstanding choral ensembles in the region,
to be chosen truly demonstrates the sustained excellence and
dedication of these students,” said conductor David Holdhusen.
Choirs selected for the bi-annual ACDA Conference must
submit one selection from each of the past three years to be
judged by a panel of respected choral musicians. The chamber
singers open the conference with their performance at 9 a.m.,
Thursday, Feb. 18.
The USD Concert Choir, directed by Timothy Campbell,
was asked by the organization to join with the South Dakota
Symphony and three other college choirs in the presentation of
“Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem,” a powerful work that is operatic
in scope, filled with drama and rarely performed. This concert
will be presented twice, once at the conference on Feb. 19 and
again as part of the SDSO’s regular season Feb. 20. Tickets for
the SDSO performance are available at the Washington Pavilion
Box Office.
The Chamber Singers and Concert Choir return to Vermillion on Sunday, Feb. 21, for the 3 p.m. USD Spring Choral Showcase in Aalfs Auditorium at Slagle
Hall. The concert also features the
Vermillion Children’s Choir and
Men’s and Women’s Chorus. The
choirs will perform music by master
composers like Handel and Mozart,
as well as modern repertoire, spirituals and folk songs. The concert is
free and open to the public.
