Deepwater Horizon rig is feared
to be gushing into the Gulf of
Mexico at five times the latest
estimate of the US Coastguard,
according to satellite imagery
studied by industry experts. The
view from space indicates that
the oil may be leaking at a rate of
25,000 barrels a day, dwarfing
the figure of 5,000 barrels that
US officials and the British oil
giant BP have used in recent
days. That would mean that nine
million gallons might already
have escaped from the underwater well following the April 20
explosion that killed 11 rig workers. It suggests the disaster will
almost certainly prove greater
than the Exxon Valdez tanker
spill off Alaska in 1989, which
released 11 million gallons and
was the worst previous spill at
sea.

A local funeral director was
recently selected for a national
post in his profession.
Kevin Opsahl, funeral director and owner of the OpsahlKostel Funeral Home and
Crematory, was named president of the International Order of
the Golden Rule, or OGR, a
worldwide organization of
approximately 1,000 independently owned funeral homes.
Opsahl
was
officially
installed as president during the
organization’s recent annual
conference in Colorado.” It’s
funny how most times you think
the work a person does is unnoticed,” he said. “It’s not just my
work, but also the full-time, parttime staff at the business that
provides services for families.”
OGR members, who consist of
funeral homes from the U.S.,
Canada, Mexico, Australia and
the UK, work from the motto,
“service measured not by gold,
but by the golden rule.” Opsahl
said that phrase is the basic
principle for how independent
funeral homes should treat and
comfort families.

Animal Days is an opportunity for pet owners and potential
pet owners to come together
gathering information on caring
for animals and, perhaps, meet a
future member of their family.
The 6th annual Animal Days was
held over the weekend in
Yankton at Riverside Park, said
Tasha Anderson, executive
director of the Heartland Human
Society. “We want everyone to
have the opportunity to come
together, socialize their pets and
learn how to protect them. The
pet owners will come to listen
and learn. They also like to
spend time together; for that
matter, they like to give their animals an opportunity to socialize
as well.”

named the new activities direc-
teachers Ellen Bollig, Dr. Tim
Mulhair, Arlene Stoebner and
Bob Winter, all of whom are
retiring this year, have taught in
the district for a combined total
of 133 years. Bollig has taught at
Lincoln for 19 years, 17 of them
as a first grade teacher. Mulhair
stressed how much he has
enjoyed every year working with
the students and especially his
co-workers. Stoebner also
credited her co-workers and
expressed her amazement that
40 years had gone by, stating it
felt like only four.
However, perhaps the funniest moment of the night came
when Winter used songs ranging from “Somewhere Over the
Rainbow” to “My Way” to
explain his philosophy on work-

Ray Pravecek and Roy
Voracek, both of Yankton, were
among the more than 100 World
War II veterans who took part in
the fifth South Dakota Honor
Flight trip to Washington, D.C., at
the end of April. The two men
were among a handful of veterans from the Yankton area. In
addition to the WWII Memorial,
the veterans visited the Korean
War Memorial, the Vietnam War
Memorial, Arlington National
Cemetery and many other sites.
Voracek, 84, was drafted into the
Army as an 18-year-old in 1944.
He ended up as part of the First
Cavalry Division battling through
Manila in the Philippines during
1945. Pravecek was also drafted
into the Army at a young age.
“Nobody wanted to go, but
somebody had to go to take care
of it,” he said. Pravecek was
stationed in Tokyo, Kobe and
Yokohama during the occupation of Japan.
