records. They have cracked the
10,000 mark for the first time in
school history. This fall’s total

South Dakotan Republican
Senator John Thune says he is
mulling over the thought of a
presidential run in 2012. He said
he would make his decision
sometime next year.
Tony Curtis, who started in
Hollywood in the 1950s to find
fame in roles from “The Defiant
Ones” to “Some Like It Hot,”
died on Wednesday at his home
in Henderson, Nev., near Las
Vegas. He was 85.

October 4
Willie Nelson kicked off the
25th annual Farm Aid Concert in
Milwaukee, Wisconsin over the
weekend. More than 30,000 fans
showed up at Miller Park for the
marathon concert. Farm Aid
was organized to help American
farmers.
October 5
The Supreme Court began a
new era this week with three
women serving together for the
first time. Eelena Kagan took her
place on the bench Monday.
She replaces John Paul Stevens
who retired after 34 years.

A federal judge ruled against
a group of parents who had
sued to keep open the SD
School for the Deaf, claiming the
school is closing in favor of an
outreach education and contracted services would deprive
the students of their due
process right and violate the
state constitution and the federal Individuals with Disabilities
Ac.
October 7
Randy Moss has been traded back to the Minnesota
Vikings. The Vikings pulled off
their biggest blockbuster since
acquiring Brett Favre.

A fire in downtown
Springfield has destroyed two
businesses, Libby’s Steakhouse
and Boschma Legal Services.
The cause of the fire is under
investigation. Two other businesses, Mr. Golf Car Inc. and
Doug Food, have smoke and
water damage.

The
South
Dakota
Association of Healthcare
Organizations recently gave the
Distinguished Service Award
president and CEO of Avera
Sacred Heart Health Services
to Pam Rezac. SDAHO represents 54 hospitals and 34 long
term care facilities across the
state.
October 13
The rescue attempt to free
the 33-trapped Chile miners who
have been stranded in the San
Jose mine since August 5 has
begun today. All 33 miners were
rescued. They were shuttled up
a narrow escape hatch. The
miners were trapped for 69
days; this was the longest
underground entrapment in
human history. The rescue took
22 hours and 37 minutes to be
completed.

Rob Buechler, 37-year-old
Yankton police officer and E-4
specialist with the South Dakota
Army National Guard’s Charlie
Battery, was selected as the
Charlie Battery Soldier of the
Year. He will be competing in
Regionals and will also have a
chance to go to Nationals.

L&M Radiator’s held a
groundbreaking ceremony yesterday on the plant site located
at 2204 West City Limits Road.
There will be a 40,000 square
foot expansion in addition to the
existing
42,000-square-foot
facility by early next year, and
the project will result in the addition of just more than 50 jobs.
The company currently employs
68 individuals.
October 22
The recent fire in Springfield,
SD at Libby’s Steakhouse has
been ruled suspicious by
authorities. Local, state and federal authorities are still investigating the blaze.
October 26
The Midwest experienced a
“Wind Machine”. Winds were
in excess of 80 mph. Many
places lost power, many airline
flights were cancelled. The
weather sparked tornadoes and
blizzard like conditions. The
massive storm stretched from
the Dakotas to the eastern Great
Lakes; waves on beaches were
reported to be up to 25 feet. Over
56 tornadoes were reported
across the country. Minnesota’s
barometric pressure was at a
record low of 28.21 inches.

In recognition of National
Disability Awareness Month,
Wal-Mart was honored as the
top employer while a Wal-Mart
employee Elmer Anderson was
honored as the top employee.
Anderson has worked as a
maintenance associate at WalMart since 2007.

The mail bomb plot that
stretched from Chicago to
Yemen may have been aimed at
blowing up planes in flight has
been thwarted. Senior U.S. officials believe that the Yemen
based militant is behind the plot.
One of the explosive devices
found inside a printer cartridge
in Dubai had flown on two airlines before it was seized by
authorities.
November 2
The New York Giants have
won the World Series, beating
the Texas Rangers 3-1 in a tense
game 5. The last time the Giants
won was in 1954.
November 3
Republican Lt. Governor
Dennis Daugaard won the
Governors race with Matt
Michels of Yankton as his running mate for Lt. Governor.
Republican Kristie Noem has
defeated Democratic Rep.
Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin for
the lone South Dakota House
seat. Incumbents Nick Moser
and Bernie Hunhoff each won
another two years in the
Legislature. Jim Vlahakis won
for Yankton County Sheriff.
Incumbents Bruce Jensen and
Allen Sinclair retained their
seats on the Yankton County
Commission while newcomer
Garry Moore took the third seat.
November 4
Two new leaders for the
Yankton based Charlie Battery
are Commander Captain Joshua
Smith and new top non-commissioned officer, First Sergeant
Chad Durfee. The new commanders look forward to working with the Yankton unit.
November 6
The United States Postal
Service may be closing
Yankton’s downtown facility. The
district office in Sioux Falls contacted the Mayor stating the
facility was one among several
nationwide that was chosen to
be “placed on the market for
possible future sale.” Public
input on closure will be sought
for 30 days. Then the USPS will
move ahead with plans to consolidate its operations at the Fox
Run Carrier Annex.

position. He has been the director for the last five years. Dangel

rate is holding steady. The South
Dakota Department of Labor
reported a 4 percent unemployment rate for October. The number of unemployed individuals in
