Yankton resident Mary
Broders came forth Thursday to
claim her prize. She brought the
winning ticket containing the
numbers 1, 20, 21, 29 and 38, as
well as the Hot Ball of 4 to the
Sioux Falls Lottery office. She
won $10.02 million. Broders said
she almost didn’t purchase a
ticket for the May 26 Hot Lotto
because she was in a hurry to
get to her job on the night shift at
Vishay
Dale
Electronics.
Ultimately, she did stop at the
Casey’s General Store located at
Eighth and Burleigh in Yankton.
The next morning, as she was
reading the newspaper at home,
Broders discovered she had the
winning ticket.

A large crowd gathered at
the new fire station, located at
201 West 23rd Street, for the
dedication ceremony and an
open house held last night. The
facility was occupied in
February, but it was only recently that landscaping work was
completed. “It feels great to get
the citizens in so they can look
at the building,” Fire Chief Tom
Kurtenbach said. He added that
it really is like a second home for
firefighters. While the downtown station will remain operational, the new station is where
the department’s training and
meeting facilities are located.

Although speculation has
been rampant in media reports
that an intruder in a Yankton
home last week was a fugitive
from the law who has gained
notoriety on the West Coast,
police have been unable to confirm those suspicions. After teletyping facts about a case
unfolding in Yankton last week
to other law enforcement agencies, Yankton’s assistant police
chief, Jerry Hisek, said his
department began receiving
calls from other authorities
warning that it could be a 19year-old man named Colton
Harris-Moore. He is also known
as the “Barefoot Bandit”
because he allegedly leaves his
bare footprints at the scenes of
his crimes. According to the
Seattle Times, Harris-Moore has
been on the run from authorities
since April 2008 when he
escaped from a Renton, Wash.,
halfway house.

rebuked his Afghanistan war
commander for “poor judgment” yesterday and considered whether to fire him. Gen.
Stanley McChrystal is prepared
to submit his resignation at a
meeting with Obama today at
the White House, two military
officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Obama summoned McChrystal to explain
disparaging comments about
his commander in chief and
Obama’s top aides. The meeting
was a last-ditch moment for the
general once considered the
war’s brightest hope.
