So far the city has granted approval for wind towers at the new Eco Auto Wash and the Yankton Public School Administration Building February 12 Mount Marty Professor Jim Reese’s latest published book of poems showcases personal reflections, which is titled “Ghost on 3rd” which was recently published by New York Quarterly Books. He teaches English at MMC and the Yankton Federal Prison Camp. The Missouri River Watershed School Festival is expanding their program that is just in their second year. The event will be held on May 7th at Riverside Park in Yankton. The event will focus on river issues and will feature 15 educational presentations. Organizers are also adding an evening program for the public at the Yankton College Alumni Theater in the Summit Activities Center. February 13 Seven Yankton medical personnel will be traveling to Haiti to help with the medical needs created by the January earthquake. The groups of seven are Physical therapist Matt Dvorak, Trenton Heinz, RN, Dr. Tom Gilmore, Dr. Jan Johnson, Physicians assistant Jim Frerk and anesthesiologists Mike Campbell and Steve Bunkers of Brookings. February 15 The rivalry between the University of South Dakota and South Dakota State has been renewed. Since USD has now joined Division II, the schools are rivals again. The schools’ women’s basketball teams will be playing tonight in Brookings. February 16 The winners of the 2010 Women of Distinction are Pam Kettering and Pam Rezac. Kettering was awarded the Woman of Distinction Outstanding Community Service and Rezac received the award for Outstanding Professional. February 17 USD students Danielle Dornbusch and Jeb List collected shoes for the Cheyenne River reservation project “Share Your Project”. The reservation that was already suffering from poverty has been devastated by recent blizzards. February 18 The Yankton County Commission has okayed funds to restore the Dakota Theatre roof project. The commissioners approved $6,000 to go towards the restoration. Chuck Lambertz, the executive director of the Lewis & Clark Theatre Company, said the repairs would be done in three stages. February 24 RTEC was honored as “Friend of Technology” with the Yankton High School. After the meeting of the Southeast Area Friends of Technology the partnership between RTEC and YHS has been recognized as one of the best in the state. February 25 Yankton’s Sacred Heart Catholic Church hopes to get construction underway this spring on their approximately $6 million community and education center addition. The Yankton City Commission granted a conditional use permit. Father Mark Lichter said the project has been in the works for the last 15 years. February 27 shop online at www.missourivalleyshopper.com As part of National Heart Month, the Press & Dakotan publisher and his wife utilized the year-old “Planet Heart” screening program at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital (ASHH) in Yankton. Gary and DeeDee Wood each received a score of zero, which signifies no sign of hardened plaque in the arteries. “Their zero is phenomenal. Zero is what we would all like to be,” said Lisa Miller, the hospital’s supervisor of cardiopulmonary services. The Woods belong to an elite group, Miller said. “The zero score means that 90 percent of people have more plaque than you,” she told them. “Planet Heart” is a cutting-edge program offered at only two sites in South Dakota, including Yankton, said Jay Gravholt, the ASHH director of marketing and public relations. March March 1 Jack and Margaret Lyons were honored yesterday as Yankton’s 2009 Citizens of the Year during a program held at the Elks Lodge. Hundreds of people turned out to honor the couple who are longtime music teachers and have been involved in numerous civic activities and for all they have contributed to Yankton during the past 45 years. The couple will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this summer. The massive earthquake that struck central Chile over the weekend, according to their President, has affected two million people. So far at least 300 people have been confirmed killed in the earthquake that struck early in the morning. The 8.8 earthquake, one of the biggest ever, triggered a tsunami that has been sweeping across the Pacific, although waves were not as high as predicted. Chile is vulnerable to earthquakes, being situated on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where the Pacific and South American plates meet. The earthquake struck 70 miles northeast of the city of Concepcion and it is the biggest to hit Chile in 50 years. Widespread damage to roads and buildings has been reported in many areas, including the capital where a chemical plant caught fire. March 8 David Barnes of Yankton’s Sacred Heart School emerged as the champion of the 2010 Yankton Regional Spelling Bee held this past weekend at the Summit Activities Center in Yankton. Finishing second in the Bee was Greg Hauer of Yankton Middle School. Colin Browen of Edison Middle School, Sioux Falls, placed third. Barnes now advances to the state spelling bee set for Saturday, March 27, at the Yankton Community Library. The Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan sponsored the local spelling bee. March 13 Stockmen’s Livestock Auction of Yankton is bringing video filming and sales to the auction barn. The owner Gail Sohler welcomed Curt Olson as the new Video Auction manager. Olson has worked for Sohler at the St. Onge sale barn in western South Dakota. The video sales will be held weekly in addition to the regularly scheduled ring auction and broadcast live on the Internet. March 17 Highway 46 North of Lesterville has been closed due to floodwaters eating away at the road. Highway 48 at the Iowa state line has been closed due to flooding along the Big Sioux River. Also an extended portion of Highway 19 south of Centerville has been closed since it is under water. March 20 David Barnes, of Yankton's Sacred Heart School emerged as the champion of the 2010 Yankton Regional Spelling Bee. An Ilbanez electric guitar that was presented to Governor Rounds during a concert in Pierre in 2006 to help dedicate the South Dakota Vietnam War Memorial has been handed over to a new home: the National Music Museum in Vermillion. March 25 This weekend the Roger Haas Tournament will celebrate their 20th anniversary with an alumni game and appreciation dinner. The tournament began in 1991 as a modest event that would give kids one more chance to pay a little more basketball before winter ended. The tournament was named after Roger Haas. He was involved with the youth both locally and regionally. He also worked with the South Dakota Special Olympics and the Yankton Morning Optimist Club that has numerous programs dedicated to youth. Roger died suddenly at the age of 42. Event organizers then formed YBI Inc. and have been celebrating this event since in Roger’s memory.
