The program helps participating athletes develop physical fitness and social skills, as well as helping with relationship building and developing friendships. Athletes must be a minimum of 8 years old, and there is no maximum age. Currently, Yankton Area Special Olympics is practicing and participating in the sports of Basketball and Cheerleading and has 64 athletes participating who range in age from 8 years to 64 years. Other sports which Yankton Special Olympics is currently offering` for athletes are Volleyball, Soccer, Swimming, Track & Field, Softball and Bocce. All of the sports that are offered allow for various skill levels of our athletes, from beginners to advanced. Unified Sports programs are also incorporated for our Junior athletes (ages 8-15) and for our Senior athletes (16+) when appropriate. Our athletes are not strictly from Yankton, but from many surrounding areas as well. Currently our athletes fall within a 40 mile radius all directions from Yankton, thus why we say Yankton Area Special Olympics. While the main focus of the Special Olympics program is about getting our athletes more skilled at the sports they enjoy and allowing them to excel at that sport in their own way; it also gets them out and moving which benefits their health. But, more importantly we believe the socialization skills our athletes acquire through teamwork and communication go a long way into assisting them in their daily life whether at work or navigating through personal appointments or daily tasks. Yankton Area Special Olympics hopes to continue to grow. We are continually seeking new programming ideas and have a few fun things planned for getting more involved within the community. Because we are non-profit, we continue to fundraise to be able to offer our athletes the ability to travel for State Tournaments.
