Here Are A Few Things By Dana Schmidt Yankton Community Library True friends are there when you need them; they believe in you and want you to succeed. The Friends of the Yankton Community Library are no different. These Friends are an organization made up of community members that value and support the role of the library. They raise money through book sales, membership fees and donations. These funds are used to supplement the library’s budget to provide materials and programs that enhance the library’s services. Past purchases have included new reading chairs, seating for the teen area, the beloved puppet theatre and so much more. In addition, they have paid the fees associated with many of the presenters that come to the library, including four acts that were part of our Summer Reading Program in 2018. This upcoming weekend, Feb. 23-24, the library will again be hosting our Oscar Movie Marathon. On Saturday, we will be playing “BlacKKKlansman” (9 a.m.), “Bohemian Rhapsody” (11:30 a.m.) and “A Star is Born” (2 p.m.). On Sunday, we will show “Isle of Dogs” (1 p.m.) and “The Wife” (3 p.m.). If you are lucky enough to get one of our reading chairs for any of these performances, you can thank the Friends for these comfortable seats. The library will provide snacks for the showing, but you are welcome to bring your favorites as well! In 2019, the Friends have already dedicated funds to two events for this summer. On May 16, we will again welcome Sean Gaskell at the Yankton GAR Hall. He will give a performance and educational demonstration on the kora, an ancient 21-stringed harp from West Africa. Thanks to the Friends and our partnership with Yankton Area Arts, we are excited to bring this unique experience to Yankton at no cost to those attending. In addition, the Friends of the Library have agreed to sponsor a special event on July 23 at 6 p.m. We will have genealogist Gail Blankenau here to do a presentation entitled “Women Homesteaders.” This presentation focuses on areas in the plains and is full of good stories, good visuals and a lot of information about homesteading. It is sure to be an interesting event that you won’t want to miss! ——— So how can you help? The Friends annual Membership Drive is held each March. Membership fees can be very minimal or range to Benefactor level with donations of $100 or more. No matter the amount, these memberships help the Friends in their mission of support- ing the Yankton Community Library. You can pick up and return a membership form at the front desk at the library. You can also support the Friends by shopping at the monthly book sales that take place the first Saturday of every month from 9:30 a.m. to noon. You could also volunteer to help with the book sales. The Friends are also happy to take donations of used books that are in good condition excluding textbooks and encyclopedias. Of course, the Friends are also willing to accept donations in the jar that is everpresent on the front desk at the library or by writing them a check. The Yankton Community Library is lucky to have friends like the Friends. We hope you will consider contributing to this great group so the library can continue offering exceptional services to the community.
