Yankton County, what a wonderful place!
Yankton County is an
amazing place to live or
visit, with strong agricultural,
manufacturing, and tourism
sectors that are all working
together to improve the
quality of life for residents and
visitors alike. Yankton County
prides itself on our clean air,
clean water, and our pleasing
environment.
The county is named for
the Yankton band of Sioux
Indians who lived in the area
since the early 1700s and

its two river systems. The
James River runs through the center of the county from north
to south and the Missouri River forms our southern border
with Nebraska. The two rivers meet just a few miles east of
Yankton.
Pierre Dorion was the first non-native person to reside here.
Dorion married a Yankton Sioux woman name Holy Rainbow
20 years before the arrival of Lewis and Clark in 1804. The
first known white woman to visit Yankton County was Pelagie
Guerette LaBarge, traveling on the Missouri River in 1847 on
a steamboat piloted by her husband Captain Joseph Marie
LaBarge. Major William Lyman was the first known white
settler in Yankton County in 1857. Lyman established a ferry
across the James River along with a small trading post.
In 1861, the Dakota Territorial Government was established
with the City of Yankton designated as the first capital. Yankton
County has always been an early and important part of the rich
history of the Dakota Territory and the State of South Dakota.
The rich history of Yankton County is preserved through many
historic buildings, historical sites and of course our wonderful
citizens. (http://www.co.yankton.sd.us)
