Sulley. He took up a claim in the fall of 1865.
Charles came to Volin in 1889 and became a businessman
there in 1894, being both a harness maker and shoe repairman.
Eucharis was the first white settler on Turkey Creek. He came
to South Dakota in the spring of 1866 where he herded cattle on
Turkey Creek, east of the current town of Volin, for his brother-inlaw, Louis Volin.
In the late 1880’s, the town of Volin and many settlers homes
were destroyed by a prairie fire. Both Henry’s and Eucharis’
homes were lost, but their youngest brother, John, saw the fire
coming soon enough to plow around the buildings and save
them. He lived one mile north of Volin.

A post office called Volin has been in operation since 1887.
The town of Volin was developed when Henry P. Volin
subdivided his holdings consisting of 390 acres of good land
and laid out the town of Volin in 1886. He called the town after
himself, and the first plat consisted of but one block and a half.
In 1894, he laid out the first addition to the town, which
consisted of 15 blocks and by 1897, it had grown to an area of
60 acres with a population of 250.
Henry came to the Dakota Territory in 1866 with his brother,
Eucharis, and homesteaded in 1868.
Other Volin brothers involved in the history of the area are
Joseph J., John, Charles P., and Eucharis (Carey).
Joseph became a resident of Yankton County in April 1864,
and was active in early day freighting from Council Bluffs to Fort
