AMSBERRY Yankton Area Arts Last weekend Yankton Area Arts hosted the annual Tour of Homes. Although the weather was a bit frightful, the homeowners were ready to open their beautiful homes to those who ventured out, and the roads were cleared nicely around the homes. Thank you to Mike & Helen Miller, Jamie & Merrick Monaghan, Ron & Jeannine Evans, Marilyn Loecker and the folks from the Cramer-Kenyon home for your willingness to open your amazing homes for the holiday season and for your support of the arts in Yankton! To those who purchase tickets year after year, we appreciate your loyalty to Yankton Area Arts and local arts education programming. I’d also like to thank all those who made desserts and volunteered during one of our busiest weekends of the year. Currently on display in the gallery is the 13th annual Crimson Door Holiday Shopping Boutique. The gallery has been transformed for the holiday season and is filled with handmade, unique items for everyone on your Christmas list. Shoppers will find items like mittens, jewelry, dreamcatchers, home décor, doll clothes, painting and photography, calendars, greeting cards, scarves, Julie hats, weavings, toys, blankets, baskets, books, journals, electronic device protectors, crochet hook holders, bookmarks, purse holders, ornaments and so much more! The Crimson Door is open daily through December 21 and members of YAA get 10% off all purchases all year long. The Crimson Door Holiday Hours are Monday-Friday from noon-6 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sundays 1-4 p.m. Need a little music to get you in the holiday spirit? You are in luck as the Yankton Area Summer Band is planning its annual Christmas Concert on Dec. 16 at 4 p.m. in the Yankton High School Theatre. The band is led by local teacher Gwen Wenisch. The concert is free to the public and all are encouraged and welcome to attend. Following the concert, cider and cookies will be provided by the Services Central Federal Credit Union. The Yankton Area Summer AMSBERRY Find it here! Band is brought to you by Yankton Area Arts and the Yankton Parks & Recreation Department. We have so much to look forward to in 2019 including a great line up of exhibits in the G.A.R. Hall Art Gallery. First up on the exhibit calendar is Glenda Drennen, a resident of Sioux City, Iowa. Her exhibit will be on display Friday, January 9-February 27 with a special reception and gallery talk on Friday, February 1 from 5-7 p.m. Ms. Drennen creates original watercolors and water media paintings. She has been painting watercolors professionally for about 40 years. “The most exhilarating thing about painting with watercolor is to take advantage of its somewhat unpredictable nature — something I do even before deciding what subject to paint,” she said. This award-winning artist has earned signature membership in the Iowa Watercolor Society and Watercolor USA, Springfield, Missouri. She is a popular, sought-after watercolor workshop instructor; therefore, Ms. Drennen will be teaching a threeday workshop at Yankton Area Arts during which she will inspire and guide participants to create their own paintings based on two of her own favorite methods. The workshop will be held Jan. 10-12 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. each day. For more information on the workshop, please visit YanktonAreaArts.org. Looking for more arts opportunities this month? The Bede Art Gallery on the campus of Mt. Marty College is currently exhibiting a student art exhibit, the Dakota Dance Association is presenting “The Nutcracker” this weekend, Trinity Lutheran Church is hosting an Advent Concert Series each Thursday titled “Bach’s Lunch,” and the United Church of Christ is hosting a concert on Dec. 16. You can find more information on arts happenings on the YAA Arts Calendar at YanktonAreaArts.org. Be sure to follow YAA on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for all the latest area arts happenings! Yankton Area Arts is a non-profit arts organization located at 508 Douglas Avenue in Yankton. The G.A.R. Hall Art Gallery is open to the public free of charge.
