Vietnam Veteran’s South Dakota Department Of Tourism Wins Eight
Awards At Annual Advertising Competition
Art Work Comes
Home To USD
VERMILLION — Galen A. Brown, native South Dakotan,
USD alumnus and a Vietnam War U.S. Marine Corp Purple
Heart recipient, will be honored by a retrospective of his
artwork at the Day Gallery in the Warren Lee Center for
the Arts at the University of South Dakota. The show runs
through April 4 with a gallery reception on March 23.
Galen Brown served two tours of duty as a sniper. He
enlisted in 1965 and was wounded in action in Hue, 1968.
His journey as an artist began after returning from war
and ended with his passing in 2013.
The show “Shapes and Shadows” is a collection of
works from his 50-year span as an artist. His series of
works delve into the shapes and shadows of what he
observed. Whether it was the shapes related to war and
peace, the shapes of justice and injustice, and even the
shapes related to his own cancer — his goal was to challenge the viewers to think.
Kay Adkins Brown, curator of the collection, states,”
In March of 1968, Galen came home to Dell Rapids, as
a wounded warrior. It seems fitting that on this 50-year
anniversary his art returns. His experiences in Vietnam,
like many others, left an emotional wound. Over the
years I knew Galen, his art was his vehicle for healing. I
believe at his passing he had come to many resolutions.
This show is an opportunity for others to experience this
journey.”
The retrospective is a selection of works on paper
from 15 series created by the artist. Included in the
exhibit is “Boots” a drawing of those he wore In Vietnam.
Between 2004-2008, Galen Brown used the American
Flag as the shape of his subjects. The piece “2 Flag” was
featured on the Story Wall from Minnesota Public Television’s “Vietnam.” In each of his pieces there is a subtle
reference to his service in Vietnam.
Galen Brown was a 1963 graduate of Dell Rapids,
South Dakota. He received his MFA from the University of
South Dakota, was a guest lecturer and Printmaker of the
Frogman Press and was Artist-in-Residence at the Oscar
Howe Gallery and Mount Marty College in Yankton in the
1980’s. His work has been exhibited and is in collections
in Germany, Italy, France, India and throughout the United
States.
PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Tourism
was recognized eight times during the 52nd ADDY Awards,
an annual awards show hosted by the South Dakota Advertising Federation (SDAF). The winners were announced at
the ADDY Awards ceremony, which was held Friday, Feb. 23,
in Downtown Sioux Falls.
According to the SDAF website, the awards are “the first
of a three-tiered national competition conducted annually
by the American Advertising Federation (AAF). It’s the
industry’s largest and most representative competition for
creative excellence.”
Out of all of the Department’s award-winning work, done
in partnership with Sioux Falls marketing and advertising
agency Lawrence & Schiller, the “My Great Place” television
spots received the highest recognition, winning Best of
Show.
In addition to that honor, the Department of Tourism
won a Best of Class award for magazine advertising for print
pieces created for the same campaign. Other prizes include
six gold awards, five of which went to work created for “My
Great Place.” The awards include magazine advertising (national); magazine advertising (in-state); national consumer
campaign; television advertising (campaign); and national
television (single spot). The Department also won a gold
award for its “Travel Insights” email campaign.
"Obviously we are beyond excited to have had such an
impressive showing at this year’s awards," said Jim Hagen,
Secretary of the Department of Tourism. "Our team works
incredibly hard to make sure we are creating messaging
that is compelling and attention-getting. While bringing
visitors to the state of South Dakota is our ultimate goal and
number one priority, the awards are definitely a plus.”
The SDAF website outlines the judging process for how
winners are selected. “Selection of the most creative entry
in each category is effected by a scoring process in which
a panel of judges evaluates all creative dimensions of every
entry. In each category, a “GOLD ADDY” is recognition of
the highest level of creative excellence and is judged to be
superior to all other entries in the competition.”
“You see so much amazing work entered every year,
which really speaks to all of the talented individuals we
have in South Dakota,” added Secretary Hagen. “We are
fortunate to be in an industry with so many creative people
and we couldn’t be happier with the work we produced
in 2017. We look forward to another great showing at next
year’s ADDY Awards.”
Finalists from the event, which includes the Department
of Tourism, now advance to the District 8 American Advertising Awards.
The South Dakota Department of Tourism is comprised
of Tourism and the South Dakota Arts Council. The department is led by Secretary James D. Hagen.
Volunteer Fire Assistance Grants Now Open
RAPID CITY, S.D. – Grant applications for the Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) program will be accepted from
March 12 to April 30, 2018.
The VFA program allows the South Dakota Department of Agriculture’s Wildland Fire Division (SDWF) to
provide volunteer fire departments funding through the
U.S. Forest Service. This funding is used to organize, train
and equip fire departments in rural areas to prevent and
suppress wildland fires.
Rural fire departments or organizations who buy fire
suppression, education and prevention equipment can
be reimbursed for the cost through these grant funds.
The maximum grant this year is 50 percent of the project
costs or $4000, whichever is less. This grant can be used
for either structural or wildland fire projects.
Eligibility requirements, administrative considerations, parameters for uses of VFA funding and the
application can be found at: http://wildlandfire.sd.gov/
VFDquicklinks/vfdquick.aspx. All applications must be
received by mail and postmarked no later than April 30,
2018. Grants will be awarded near the middle of May.

PIERRE — Houses, barns and other
buildings made of sod are the focus of the
Winter 2017 historic preservation issue
of “South Dakota History,” the quarterly
journal of the South Dakota State Historical Society.
“It’s Weathered Many a Storm: The Enduring Sod House in Northwestern South
Dakota” by Molly P. Rozum details the
role of sod structures in the settlement
of the region. Though most sod buildings
