Managing Chronic Disease
BROOKINGS, S.D. - One in three South Dakotans suffer from chronic disease. Jacqueline Rhode is one of them. Since childhood, Rhode, 31, has been in and out of hospitals.
First with her dad, Edward Rhode, who suffered from chronic disease until his death when Rhode was only 15, leaving her
alone to be cared for by her church family.
Then, as a college freshman, Rhode began her own saga of living with and trying to manage chronic disease.
“It can be frustrating to manage your chronic disease because it seems that everything you learn is from trial and error - it can
take such a long time to gather the tools and skills you need to properly manage chronic disease,” explains Rhode, 31, who lives
with three chronic diseases,
cerebral palsy, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
Today, Rhode has come a
long way. She went from being
confined to her bed to living a
full life now that she is able to
manage her chronic diseases.
She is passionate about
supporting other members of
her Crow Creek Reservation
community who also suffer
from chronic disease as colead for Better Choices, Better
Health® program.
These community-led BetGuns, Antiques, Household, Miscellaneous

workshops are an extension of Stanford University’s
Chronic Disease Self-Management Program. The program
is brought to South Dakotans
