$221,195
In Tobacco
Disparities
Grants
PIERRE, S.D. – The Department of Health is awarding
$221,195 in grants to reduce
tobacco use in populations
with higher rates of tobacco
use.
The tobacco disparities
grants are aimed at reducing
tobacco use among the following priority population
groups
disproportionately
affected by tobacco: youth
and young adults, American
Indians, pregnant women,
Medicaid clients, spit tobacco
users and mental health and
substance abuse populations.
This is the first year that
grants have been awarded.
“Tobacco use is the leading
cause of preventable death.
The work that these community organizations accomplish
through these grants can help
reduce tobacco’s impact locally and statewide,” said
Kiley Hump, chronic disease
prevention and health promotion administrator for the Department of Health.
Awarded grantees include
Boys & Girls Club of Brookings, Boys and Girls Club
of Watertown, Coteau Des
Prairies Health Care System,
Delta Dental of South Dakota
Foundation, Missouri Breaks
Industries Research, Inc. and
the Teddy Bear Den. These
organizations will carry out a
variety of activities throughout the year such as providing tobacco prevention and
cessation education and increasing QuitLine enrollment.
“Identifying and eliminating
tobacco-related disparities
is one of the four goal areas
of the Tobacco Control State
Plan. The steps these organizations are taking to prevent
and control tobacco use
have a positive influence on
the lives of South Dakotans,”
Hump said.
The Department of Health’s
tobacco control program
coordinates state efforts to
reduce death and disease
caused by tobacco use. Efforts include providing technical assistance and support
to individuals, communities,
schools, workplaces, tribes
and healthcare facilities; offering funding and support
to local entities; conducting
statewide public education
campaigns; operating the
state’s tobacco QuitLine; and
conducting surveillance and
program evaluation.
Preventing and reducing
the burden of chronic disease
through tobacco control efforts is one objective of the
Department of Health’s 20152020 strategic plan, http://
doh.sd.gov/strategicplan.
