Cow Calf Education and
Research Facility Dedication
BROOKINGS, S.D. - South Dakota State University will host the Grand Opening of its state-of-the art Cow-Calf Education and Research Facility on Sept. 16 with tours starting at 5 pm, program
and dedication at 6 pm, along with a chuck wagon BBQ and live entertainment. The unit is located at 2901 Western Avenue, two and a half miles northwest of the SDSU Animal Science Complex
in Brookings, SD. The public is encouraged and welcome to attend this event.
The new unit features working cattle facilities that are designed for educational demonstrations highlighting proper cattle handling and treatment techniques. The main building includes an
80-seat classroom which will be utilized for student classes as well as producer meetings and industry events. Additional features include a double alley system, Silencer chute and Bud Box.
The building also has a multi-use barn space with a center concrete drive and area for portable pens on either side.
“This new Cow-Calf Education and Research Facility will enable us to put our education in beef cattle production on the leading edge for decades,” says Daniel Scholl, Interim Dean of the
College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences and Director of the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station. “The capacity of this facility for teaching, research and Extension will lay the
groundwork for many years of service to the beef cattle industry. Our desire is to always be the go-to location for beef cattle education and scientific research.”
A monoslope research building houses equipment that measures individual feed and water intake and allows for unique nutrition research studies. Replicated pastures on the site will be used
to conduct grazing management research.
“We are so excited to finally show students, the public and the beef industry our new unit,” says Joe Cassady, SDSU Animal Science Department Head. “This unit enables our faculty and students to pursue their scholarly interests and do so with the best facilities in the country. This project would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts and generosity of our alumni
and friends.”
Scholl and Cassady encourage members of the public to tour the new unit during the Sept. 16 dedication. “We want to publicly
express our thanks to our visionary donors and leaders of the state and region for helping us provide this outstanding educational tool to benefit our students and stakeholders,” Scholl adds. “Thanks to the leadership provided by our department head
and former dean, we are so pleased to be able to have this opportunity to partner with our donors to deliver state-of-the-art
education and research opportunities.”
Each year more than 600 SDSU undergraduate students will gain hands-on training in the state-of-the-art facilities in the areas
of beef nutrition, management, breeding, genetics, reproduction, cattle evaluation, seedstock marketing, and low stress handling techniques.

Sept. 17 at Yankton’s Cramer-Kenyon Heritage Home.
Program On Alice
Cramer Slated Sept. 17
The Cramer-Kenyon
Heritage Home and Yankton
Area Arts are partnering for
a unique, all-inclusive tour,
luncheon and art class at noon
on Saturday, Sept. 17.
The Cramer-Kenyon
Heritage Home, 509 Pine in
Yankton, will host a special
tour of the house, focusing on
Alice Cramer and her paintings followed by a sumptuous
luncheon in the dining room
catered by Willa B’s.
The tour will be packed
with information and viewing
of items not seen at the home
before. Jean Kenyon Lovelace
returned some very special
pieces to the Cramer-Kenyon
home during her visit on July
30. Many belonged to Mrs.
Nelson J. (Alice) Cramer; or, as
she signed her artwork, “Alice
M. Bulfinch Cramer.”
The group will then gather
in GAR Hall Art Gallery, 508
Douglas, to recreate a painting
seen on the tour under the
direction of Cheryl PetersonHalsey. Cheryl has led many
paint and sip style classes
with Yankton Area Arts. Her
sense of humor and laid-back
attitude, make each student,
from the beginner to the consummate painter, comfortable
with a paintbrush in hand.
There is a fee to attend the
all-inclusive soiree. Space is
limited, so register by calling
Yankton Area Arts at 665-9754.
Registration can also be done
online at yanktonareaarts.org.
