The park, which sprawls across almost 2,400 acres of land near Ponca, Nebraska, contains a unique variety of natural landscapes, making it the perfect site for visitors to engage in a wide range of activities. Established in 1934, the park has seen a lot of changes throughout its 82 years. But according to Jeff Fields, the Ponca State Park superintendent, preserving the park’s rich history and unique natural landscapes is always a priority. “We’ve done some pretty careful planning throughout the years,” he said. “We’ve been sure to preserve the neat natural resources that make Ponca special.” A RICH HISTORY When Ponca State Park was first established, it consisted of a mere 200 acres. “The park was actually part of an initial establishment by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp),” Fields said. “The CCC camp that was at Niobrara State Park was moved from Niobrara to here, to establish Ponca.” The Civilian Conservation Corp was a temporary public program that sought to provide work to men throughout the Great Depression. At USD Staffer Voted Top Toastmaster VERMILLION — A University of South Dakota staff member has been chosen outstanding Toastmaster of the year by her fellow Vermillion club members. Lindsay Hayes, coordinator of student and institutional assessment at USD, was awarded the honor. In that position, she works with the USD Office of Institu- CCC camps, men built roads, trails, shelter houses and more. But in truth, the history of the park begins way before the CCC set up camp at Ponca. And according to Maria Korver, a park superintendent who specializes in outdoor education, that history is a prominent part of many of the park’s present attractions. One such attraction is an art piece entitled “The Towers of Time.” The piece features three towers engraved with different animals and educates visitors about the animals that might have populated the park millions of years ago. “Each tower represents a different time period in history,” Korver said. “The first tower represents the Cretaceous period, the time of dinosaurs. The second tower represents the Ice Age, the time of larger mammals like mammoths and saber-tooth tigers. On the last tower are animals you would recognize today.” The towers, which are visible from the park’s entrance, are popular with visitors, according to Korver. “Another huge attraction is the old oak tree,” Korver said. The tree reminds visitors that the landscapes of the park were there long before the park’s establishment, even before the United States declared its independence. “It was a seedling way back in 1644,” Korver said. “You can do the math: that’s an over 300 year old tree. It’s very knobby. You can see it’s been through a lot of history. I love that tree.” The Lewis and Clark expedition is another key component in the park’s history. In 1804, the expedition traveled through the Elk Point area, which is located just across the river from Ponca. tional Research, Planning and Assessment to coordinate national and institutional assessments, placement and proficiency testing, and faculty evaluations. Once An Old CCC Camp, Ponca State Park Is Building For The Future Editor’s Note: This is the second in a four-series of profiles on selected state parks and recreation areas in the Press & Dakotan coverage area. ——— Announcements 1200 Events 2010 According to one of the park’s many educational signs, a man named Patrick Gass was appointed to serve as the expedition’s new sergeant during their stop in the area. He replaced Sgt. Charles Floyd, who had died shortly before. Fields said that the Lewis and Clark expedition still has an impact on park activities more than 200 years later. “(The park) played a large part of the Lewis and Clark bicentennial celebration here in 2003-2006. The weekend they were in this area, we had a lot of activities and re-enactor encampments. It’s kind of unique: the National Park Service has a passport program where you can get a stamp at parks across the country. We actually have two stamps (at Ponca), and the Lewis and Clark historic trail stamp is one of them,” he said. 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY Maurice and CarolAnn Becker will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Saturday, July 16. Today, the park is characterized by its wide assortment of natural habitats. “We have a unique medley of natural landscapes here,” Fields said. According to Fields, Ponca State Park acts as the eastern gateway to an unchannelized section of the Missouri River known as the Missouri National Recreational River, which is a national park. “Some of the newer property acquired in last 10 years includes land in the flood plain (of the river), so we (the park) have prairie and wetlands,” Fields said. But the park’s most unexpected natural landscape feature is Fields’ favorite. “I think the Eastern De- n NATURE Page 10 last year and started a Toastmasters International Club for all faculty, staff, students and Vermillion residents who want to improve their communication skills.
