Korver said the Eric Wiebe
Memorial Shooting Complex
located within the park is a
popular destination for visitors.
“Our shooting sports are
very big,” she said. “In our
shooting range, we have archery, a prehistoric tool called

oaders.”
The park also offers more
than 22 miles of trails for
the avid hiker or mountain
biker. Korver said these trails
are one of her favorite park
features.
“You can hike the trails
and look out over the river
and see for miles,” she said. “I
love to get on a trail and just
go. You never know what you
are going to see.”
Korver said that visitors
can always engage in activities by attending the park’s
wide range of educational
programs.
“(Our education programs
are) something we’ve really
grown throughout the years,”
she said. “We offer programs
almost daily. Programs can
range from teaching fishing to
talking about birds to learning
about rocks.”
Some of these programs
are based out of the park’s
education center. The center
serves as a place where kids
and adults alike can learn
about the park and the Missouri River. It also serves as
the park’s headquarters.
Other park activity offerings include horseback riding,
kayaking, golfing and fishing.

Fields said that the park
has many big plans for the
future. Lately, the focus has
been on updating and mod-
ernizing certain facilities.
“We’re getting a Ponca
State Park Aquatic Center,” he
said. “We’re hoping to open
it up this summer for a short
time; the official opening is
next year.”
The park has also been
updating its lodging.
“We just built some new
cabins,” Fields said. “So we
now have 31 cabins. Fifteen
are the new mini lodges — big
four-bedroom cabins. We’re
now in the process of replacing 10 of our older cabins with
newer ones as well. Then the
two-bedroom cabins will then
be available year-round; currently they’re only seasonal.”
Opening the cabins yearround is part of the park’s
plan to transition into a fourseason destination, according
to Fields.
“We want people to know
there are still fun things to
do in the winter time (here),”
Fields said.
Fields said the modernizations will never replace the
park’s focus on the outdoors.
“Our motto is ‘Where People and Nature Meet,’” he said.
“The natural resources make
it a very beautiful place. We’ve
just tried to complement that
beauty with some really nice
lodging and facilities.”
Anyone interested in staying in one of the park’s cabins
or campsites or learning more
