School July 20 -21 2016, at the Volga
Research Farm. The farm is located
1.5 miles south of Volga on Brookings
County Road 5 (464th Ave), on the east
side of the road.

event costs, the registration fee is $225
when you register by July 8. After July
8 the registration fee is $250. This fee
includes meals and all handouts/reference materials.

- 26, 2016.
Workshop details
The event begins at 8 a.m. both days
with the last session on July 20 ending
at 4:45 p.m. and the last session on July
21 ending around 3 p.m.
During this two-day workshop sessions will be hosted by SDSU Extension
staff and South Dakota State University
faculty. The following topics will be
covered:
Weed Management: Crop Injury
Characteristics and New GMO Products
Discussion for the Future Led by Paul
O. Johnson, SDSU Extension Weed Science Coordinator, this field training will
focus on diagnosing common problems,
such as crop injury associated with
herbicide applications and carryover in
corn, soybean, and other crops. Participants will be challenged to identify the
causes of crop injury or weed control
failure in simulation plots. Participants
will also be part of a discussion on how
new GMOs will change their business in
the future.
Effective Plant Disease Management:
What you don’t see could be hurting
your yield This session is led by Em-
manuel Byamukama, Assistant Professor & SDSU Extension Plant Pathologist.
In order for plant diseases to develop,
three factors must be present: a susceptible host (planted crop), the pathogen,
and a conducive environment. Since the
host is always there, the pathogen and
the environment become the limiting
factors. In this session, we will learn
about sources of inoculum for various
diseases and the role of weather in
driving plant disease epidemics. We
will also learn proactive approaches for
effective and profitable plant disease
management.
Insect Management: Techniques for
Scouting and Identification of Insect
Pests This session is led by Adam
Varenhorst, Assistant Professor & SDSU
Extension Field Crop Entomologist.
There are several insect pests that
may cause economic injury to crops in
South Dakota. The focus of this session
will be learning the scouting techniques
for key insect pests. In addition, we will
also cover identification of common
insect pests and then apply both the
learned scouting and identification
skills in demonstration plots.
Soil Properties, Productivity and
Fertilizer “Goof Ups”: This session is led
by Anthony Bly, SDSU Extension Soils
Field Specialist and Jon Kleinjan, Crop
Production SDSU Extension Associate.
Participants will learn to identify soil
properties that lead to higher productivity. Improper fertilizer applications
will be made for participants to diagnose and identify.
Managing Cover Crops in the Upper
Midwest: Opportunities and Challenges
This session is led by Peter Sexton,
Southeast Farm Manager & Associate
Professor & SDSU Extension Sustainable Cropping Systems Specialist and
David Karki, SDSU Extension Agronomy
Field Specialist. Participants will
review benefits of cover crops within a
cropping system and its effects on soil
health. Work looking at the influence
of cover crop blends on rate of residue
decomposition and nutrient cycling
will be presented. We will discuss cover
crop species selection, seeding times
and methods, and establishment when
seeded in-season into cash crop/s.
Research results from cover crop studies conducted at the SDSU Southeast
Research Farm will also be thoroughly
discussed.
Climate Trends Impacting Agriculture: This session is led by Dennis
Todey, SDSU and State Climatologist
& Laura Edwards, SDSU Extension Climate Field Specialist. This session will
review tools and products available to
understand current climate conditions
in South Dakota and potential decisionmaking. Additional decision tools and
current conditions will be addressed.
Cost of Production and Making
a Profit: This session is led by Jack
Davis, SDSU Extension Crops Business
Management Field Specialist. Cost of
production is mainly related to input
costs, but sale price determines profit
or loss. This noon session will discuss
both of these aspects and how they
need to work together to make our
clients as profitable as possible with
lower grain prices.
Workshop participants can earn Certified Crop Advisor continuing education credits in:
* Soil & Water Management- 1.5
credits
* Integrated Pest Management - 4.5
credits
* Crop Management - 3.5 credits
* Crop Injury Characteristics and
New GMO Products. niGrow
Hummus: Healthful
& Versatile
BROOKINGS, S.D. - Hummus, which has become one of
the most popular dips in the U.S. is also good for you said
Ann Schwader, SDSU Extension Nutrition Field Specialist.
“Chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans are excellent sources of dietary fiber and plant protein,” Schwader
said. “A versatile legume and common ingredient in Middle
Eastern and Indian dishes, Chickpeas are also high in
folate and potassium. They are located in both the protein
and vegetable food groups and contain phytochemicals,
which may reduce the risk of certain types of cancers.”
Schwader goes on to explain that 1 cup of cooked
chickpeas has 24.4 grams of fiber and counts as 1 cup of
vegetables - helping contribute to an adult’s daily goal of
2.5 to 3 cups of vegetables per day. As for protein, 1/4 cup
of cooked chickpeas counts as an ounce equivalent in the
protein group.
Chickpeas are a legume known as a pulse. Lentils,
dry beans and dry peas are also pulses. Pulses produce
seeds within a pod. According to the USDA’s MyPlate food
system, these types of foods are in the beans and peas
subgroup.
“You can eat chickpeas hot or cold, canned or dry.
Chickpeas are found in grocery stores with other ready-touse canned beans or they can be purchased dry in plastic
bags or bulk,” Schwader said.
Chickpeas have a nutlike taste and a texture that is
buttery, yet somewhat starchy. They can be roasted and
added to salads, used in soups, or easily pureed from the
can to create a smooth hummus.
Tips for Serving Hummus
1. An ingredient that’s often found in hummus recipes
is tahini. Tahini is a thick paste made from ground sesame
seeds. Tahini is also called sesame paste.
2. Dunk veggie sticks into hummus as a tasty snack. It’s
a great way to sneak in a serving of vegetables.
3. Use hummus as a regular condiment like ketchup or
mustard.
4. Try hummus on a bagel.
5. Spread hummus on warmed pita bread.
