2016 Dakota Lakes Research Farm Field Day
BROOKINGS, S.D. - The
Dakota Lakes Research Farm
will be hosting their Annual
Summer Field Day on Thurs-
day, June 30, 2016 beginning
at 3 p.m. and running until
dark. This event is always
held on the last Thursday in
June.
The Dakota Lakes
Research Farm has been
operating for 26 years with
the mission to
identify, research
and demonstrate
methods of
strengthening
and stabilizing
the agriculture
economy.
The research
enterprise at the
farm is operated
by the South
Dakota Agricultural Experiment
Station. The notfor-profit Dakota
Lakes Research
Farm Corporation manages the
production enterprise and owns
the land, the
fixed facilities,
and much of the
field equipment.
Much of the
station’s work
has focused on development
of diverse environmentally
friendly farming systems
The June 30 field day will
feature numerous speakers
from the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station,
SDSU Extension and the U.S.
Department of Agriculture.
Attendees will travel on
wagons around the farm and
view the ongoing research
which includes long term
crop rotations under irrigation and dryland management. Presenters will also
discuss winter wheat variety
trials, wheat diseases and
management, pulse crops,
oilseed crops, corn, and
soybeans.
The tour will share progress regarding three new
projects being funded by
The Howard Buffet Foundation.
The new projects include
research on coated seed
technology to hopefully
increase the consistency of
cover-crop establishment,
development of native vegetation habitat in public land
and roadsides, and research
and demonstration efforts
associated with integrating
livestock into farming operations. One project is building
a self-propelled grazing cell.
Wagons will take attendees around the farm
beginning shortly after 3
p.m. Wagons will load at
the farm headquarters and
leave there at 45-60 minute
intervals.
