BROOKINGS, S.D. - The South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum presents “The Wolff Family: Early Sheep Ranching in South Dakota,” June 16 at 6:30 p.m. As part of the program, the children of Phil Wolff will share home movies of the family’s vast sheep operation in the Badlands of South Dakota. Lowell Slyter, SDSU Animal Science Professor Emeritus, will join the family in providing reflections about what made this operation successful. The program is free and open to the public. The Wolff Ranch, originating in the 1920’s, was one of the largest sheep operations in South Dakota. Otto Wolff and his son, Philip, were early innovators that greatly influenced sheep and wool production and range improvement during the 20th century in South Dakota. The films being presented for this program will be a combination of a film Otto Wolff produced for programs he conducted around the region about his operation and interviews of Phil Wolff recorded by Dr. Lowell Slyter. They present a rich visual history of life on a sheep ranch in the mid-20th Century. Founded in 1884, the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum’s mission is toinspire a passion for the diverse history, culture and science of agriculture in South Dakota. It is the official State museum for preserving the history of agriculture and rural life of South Dakota located in the historic Stock Judging Pavilion on the South Dakota State University campus at 977 11th Street, Brookings, S.D. The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 605.688.6226 or visit the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum online.
