New Position at SDSU
McCrory Gardens
BROOKINGS, S.D. - Thanks
in part to a $19,600 grant
from the Stanley Smith
Horticulture Trust, McCrory
Gardens Education and Visitors Center, Brookings, S.D.,
recently promoted Christina
Lind-Thielke to work as a
full-time Assistant Gardener/
Education Coordinator.
“Receiving the grant from
the trust really validated the
need for an Education Coordinator,” said Heather Costello, Operations Manager of
McCrory Gardens Education
and Visitor Center. “We are
excited for the growth of
McCrory Gardens, and also
about what we can do in the
future with Christina as an
additional resource.”
Costello says the Education Coordinator position
helps fulfill the mission of
McCrory Gardens Education
and Visitor Center by “Connecting people and plants
through education, discovery, research, and enjoyment of the natural and built
landscape.”
The grant covers the Education Coordinator portion
of Lind-Thielke’s position.
More about Christina
Lind-Thielke
Lind-Thielke, first worked
at McCrory Gardens as a
summer gardener while
attending South Dakota
State University. Following
graduation, she worked in
the landscaping industry in
California before returning
to McCrory Gardens. She
has been assisting Head
Gardener Chris Schlenker
with the care of the 45 acres
of arboretum and 25 acres of
formal display gardens that
make up McCrory Gardens.
In her new position she
will continue to work with
Schlenker. Lind-Thielke and
Schlenker manage a staff
of 10 student gardeners
throughout the summer
months as well as various
other volunteers throughout
the year. With the help of
staff and volunteers they
plant 40,000 annual plants
each spring.
As the Education Coordinator Lind-Thielke will also
take on several additional
duties. In this role she will
lead garden tours, continue
educational outreach to
schools and the community,
and coordinate all the educational programs offered by
McCrory Gardens Education
and Visitors Center.
“It’s busy during every
season and we have more
of a year-round appeal now
with the education center,”
Lind-Thielke said.
She has already launched
a few new programs for
summer 2016. Some of the
programs Lind-Thielke oversees include: Third Thursday
at the Gardens, which offers
free adult educational sessions to the public; Books
and Bloom, an eight-week
session for preschoolers
in the summer; and Team
Green, a program geared
toward third to fifth graders
which teaches them about
different aspects of nature.
New this year is the
Junior Arborist’s Camp. It
will be a week-long camp for
13-18 year-olds, focusing on
trees in the arboretum and
the arborist profession.
