A ‘Haphazard’ Offering

Some classic fairy tales get the once over in the
Yankton Children’s Theatre Company production of “Haphazardly Ever After,” which starts
next week at the Dakota Theatre in downtown
Yankton. ABOVE: In the play, two fairies (Jasmine Gill and Lily Lawrence) set the stage for
the story, which features a king and queen coping with some bratty children. RIGHT: The royal

“Who doesn’t love a good
fairy tale?”
That is the question the
Yankton Children’s Theatre
Company asks as it prepares
to present its magical next
production.
That show is “Haphazardly Ever After,” a parody
of various classic fairy tales,
said Richard Wright, the
director of the play.
The show will be presented on March 31-April 2

kids and adults can enjoy,
Wright said.
Children are best suited
for physical comedy, he said,
noting that they will do just
about anything and love
making people laugh.
Wright said he is working
with a particularly talented
group of kids, ranging from
ages 7-14 with a 4-year-old
for a small role.
“They are very dedicated
and willing to learn,” Wright
said, “I don’t call them kids
anymore. I just call them performers because that is what
they are.”
Wright especially believes
that his leading actors —
including Quinn Fargo (King
Barnabas), Ashli Aguirre
(Queen Mildred), Sydney
Kaiser (Princess Cinnamon),
Natalie Nayokpuk (Princess
Peppermint), Nicholas
Nayokpuk (Prince Hairgell)
and Seth Fargo (Prince
Slacker) — have pulled out
all the stops for their show.
“Playing a lead role is
more difficult since the per-
formers have more lines to
remember, as well as having
the most amount of time on
stage,” Wright said.
One of the goals of the
Yankton Children’s Theatre
Company is to teach the
young actors more about
acting as a profession and
how they can start working
towards pursuing acting
later in their lives, he said.
Shows like this would be
impossible if it wasn’t for
the partnership between the
Yankton Children’s Theatre
Company and the Lewis and
Clark Theatre Company,
Wright said.
“They are great partners
of the children’s theatre,” he
said. “In fact, they allowed
us to recycle the set from
the last play Lewis and Clark
held.”
Shellee Heinemeyer, the
director of Lewis and Clark
Theatre Company, said
she is excited to allow the
children’s theatre space this
year.
“These kids have been

awesome this year and I look
forward to seeing them succeed with “Haphazardly Ever
After” and the future plays
that will be done.”
This production does
face some unique challenges,
however.
“This year could be
tough,” Wright said. “This is
the first play I have directed
that has had an intermission,
and we are putting on this
show seven times, where
most plays run for four
shows.”
The play is sponsored by
the Eagle Eye Ride and the
Mary Carda Simek Memorial
Community & Charity Fund.
