BROOKINGS, S.D. - As we
enter the spring and summer
months, livestock producers need to start thinking
about the risk of nitrates
in feed supplies and how
it will affect their livestock
operations, explains Karla

Forages Field Specialist.

• Go green. Choose paint,
furniture and a baby mattress for your child’s bedroom that are free of harmful
chemicals. Read labels carefully. Conventional and even
organic mattresses typically
have waterproof covers that
contain PVCs that children
breathe in all night. However,
a mattress made from fibers
woven to create air pockets
offers maximum breathability.
(StatePoint) For babies
and young children, high
quality sleep is crucial for
development and overall
health. By adopting good,
safe sleep habits early, the
entire family can get the rest
needed to thrive.
“I’ve heard it quoted that
anyone who says they ‘sleep
like a baby’ has never been a
parent! Ask most parents and
one of their top priorities
is for both kids and parents
to get more sleep,” says Dr.
Deena Blanchard, a partner
at Premier Pediatrics in NYC.
However, any sleep
children do get should be as
safe as possible, as sleeping presents hazards just
like any other activity. With
that in mind, Blanchard is
offering parents great tips
for helping young ones sleep
soundly and safely.
• At around six to eight
weeks of age, infants start to
develop circadian rhythms.
At this point, create a consistent routine before bedtime,
such as dimming lights. Your
baby will start to pick up on
these habits as sleep cues.
• For safety, the crib
should be free of bumpers,
blankets, pillows, wedges
and stuffed animals.
• Sleep safety evolves
as your child develops, so
consider developmental
milestones. Once your
little one rolls over, make
sure that she is no longer
swaddled. It’s always best to
put your baby on her back
to sleep, but once your baby
rolls over, it’s not necessary
to go into the room and flip
her onto her back. Likewise,
when your child starts to
pull to stand, make sure the
crib mattress is adjusted to
the lowest level and there
are no nearby items that she
can pull into the crib.

BROOKINGS, S.D. - Participants celebrate the lasting legacy of one of the nation’s largest
student-run livestock contests during the 93rd Little International which takes place on the
campus of South Dakota State University, Brookings, in the Animal Science Arena on Friday
and Saturday, April 1-2, 2016.
The event begins on Friday, April 1, when hundreds of high school students arrive on
campus from throughout South Dakota and Minnesota to join college students competing
in judging contests.
Little ‘I’ is managed by a volunteer staff of more than 100 SDSU students. Little I Manager, Adam Krause, a senior Agribusiness major from Clear Lake, says a SDSU College of Agriculture & Biological Sciences Alumni Reception is a new addition to this year’s schedule.
The reception will be held from 3 to 5:00 p.m. in the lobby of the Animal Science building on Saturday, April 2.
There’s no charge for admission to watch Little I events.
Friday will consist of a full slate of livestock judging contests, showmanship and fitting
competitions, as well as displays. Opening ceremonies begin on both Friday and Saturday
nights at 5 p.m. Friday’s events wrap up with the novice swine showmanship preliminary
round.
Saturday’s events kick off with horse showmanship preliminaries at 8:00 a.m. and conclude with an awards ceremony at 8:35 p.m.
A dance will be held following the awards ceremony, April 2, from 10 p.m.- 1 a.m. and
will feature Mitch Gordon and the Unleaded Band. The dance takes place at the Swiftel
Center in Brookings. Tickets to the dance can be purchased at the door for $10.
To learn more and view a complete schedule, visit the Little International website or
contact Krause at 605-956-1390.

Hernandez explained that
nitrate accumulation occurs
in the lower portions of the
plant, such as the stalk or
stem, and less in the upper
portions of the leaves.
When forages contain too
much nitrate, and livestock
consumer the plant, it
can prevent animals from
completing its conversion to
amino acids and protein.
“These nitrates are
absorbed directly into the
blood stream when they
combine with hemoglobin to
form meth-hemoglobin. This
last compound is the cause
of asphyxiation in animals,”
Hernandez said.
When producers suspect
there is a problem with
nitrates, testing can be accomplished to establish the
levels of nitrates present, or
no present, in the plant.
