‘Living Traditions’ Exhibit Slated
For Mount Marty College
“Living Traditions: Dakota,
Nakota, Lakota Art,” a traveling art exhibit from the South
Dakota State Historical Society,
will be showcased at the Bede
Art Gallery Jan. 4-29, 2016, and
the Mother Jerome Schmitt
Library from Feb. 1-26, 2016,
both located on the Mount Marty
College Campus.
The Dakota, Nakota and Lakota people of South Dakota have
produced beautiful art throughout their history. Bringing out
the beauty in everyday objects
led to strong traditions of
decorative quillwork, beadwork,
painting and carving. Dance and
ceremonies also have an important place in Sioux culture.
“Living Traditions: Dakota,
Nakota, Lakota Art” showcases
artistic work done in three different time periods — the nomadic
hunting period, the reservation
period, and modern times. Text,
photographs and images of
objects from the museum collection are shown on 20 text panels
in five pop-up kiosks.
“The artwork featured in this
exhibit is outstanding,” said
Helen B Louise, Museum of the
South Dakota State Historical Society
Director. “Using visual art from different
historic periods shows how important
traditions continue to be a part of life
today.”
This exhibition was funded by the
South Dakota Heritage Fund and the
State of South Dakota.
“Living Traditions: Dakota, Nakota,
Lakota Art” is one of 10 pop-up kiosk
exhibits available from the South
Dakota State Historical Society. Other
exhibits include: “Lewis and Clark
in South Dakota,” which tells about
the animals, plants, and people that
the Corps of Discovery encountered;
“Properties of History: Exploring
South Dakota’s Historic Places,” which
features historic properties from across
the state; “Life Underground: Hard Rock
Mining in the Black Hills,” which examines the state’s rich mining history; “At
Home & Abroad: South Dakota in World
War II,” which shares the story of South
Dakotans during the war; “South Dakota
Communicates,” which looks at early
telephone communication in the state;
“A Capital Fight:
Choosing South
Dakota’s Capital
City,” which tells
about the lively
multi-year fight to
Let Our Family
Business keep yours
in the go with:
permanently locate the capital; “Drawn
to the Land: Homesteading Dakota,”
which looks at the homesteading
experience in Dakota; and “Marketing
Dakota,” which explores the hard sell
used to draw settlers to the territory
and the state.

Altered Book Exhibition
Offered At USD Library
VERMILLION — An altered book exhibit on display
in the University Libraries
at the University of South
Dakota features 46 pieces
by 37 artists from Canada,
Spain, Romania and the U.S.
Altered books are mixed
media artwork that changes
a book from its original form
or meaning by various processes like cutting, painting,
tearing and collage.
The biennial international exhibition, “Bound and
Unbound III,” juried by Sandy
Brooke, associate professor of art at the College of
Liberal Arts at Oregon State
University-Cascades in Bend,
Oregon, will be on display
through Jan. 4.
“I selected books I
believed would challenge the
viewer and make them interact with the work,” Brooke
said. “Some artists recycled
library books, grinding
them into paper pulp and
remolding them. One series
crystalized the book in Borax
crystals creating a jeweled,
reflective surface as if it were
something you might find
deep in a cave.”
Committee member Sarah
A. Hanson, digitization and
photographs associate at
USD University Libraries,
said the exhibition showcases artists who have exhibited
internationally, nationally
and regionally. Some of the
artists have works in permanent collections at the Museum of Modern Art in New
York, San Francisco Museum
of Modern Art, Guggenheim,
Smithsonian, Center for the
Book, National Museum for
Women in the Arts and AT&T.
“We are pleased to have
such a strong exhibition,
representing very competent
book artists,” Hanson said.
To read more about each
artist and to view a video
of the juror discussing the
works, see the “Bound and
Unbound III” LibGuide.
“Bound and Unbound
III” is available for viewing
online in the Digital Library
of South Dakota.
The exhibition is located
in the cases on the second
floor of the I.D. Weeks Library at USD and open to the
public during library operating hours.
L&C Recreation Area
Hosting First Day Hikes
Lewis and Clark Recreation Area invites park visitors to
take a winter bird watching hike and a fitness hike on New
Year’s Day as part of America’s State Parks’ First Day Hikes
initiative in all 50 states, and the Surgeon General’s challenge
for all Americans to walk or wheel 22 minutes per day.
Assistant Park Manager Tonna Hartman will lead a guided
bird watching hike through the park beginning at 10 a.m. Friday Jan. 1, 2016. Participants are asked to meet at the Lewis
& Clark Recreation Area Welcome Center, located five miles
west of Yankton on Highway 52, and should bring binoculars
and dress appropriately for the weather.
After the bird hike Tonna will give a 30-minute presentation on birding at the Welcome Center. Hot chocolate and
cookies will be served.
The fitness hike will begin at 11 a.m. after the winter bird
watching hike.
“A park entrance license is required year-round for all
vehicles entering the park,” said Shane Bertsch, district park
supervisor. They may be purchased at the self-pay station
at the entrance booth or at the Welcome Center during business hours.
