Energize! Conference:
Save the Date! May 5-6, 2020
BROOKINGS, S.D.
- The SDSU Extension
Community Vitality Team
and the Community of
Milbank are teaming up
to host the Energize!
Exploring Innovative Rural
Communities Conference
May 5-6, 2020 in Milbank,
South Dakota.
Designed to invigorate
South Dakota’s rural
communities, Energize
invites rural communities
to network with other
community leaders
from across the state,
share success stories,
get ideas and to take
action to improve their
own communities. The
conference will offer
several sessions including:
Funding for Community
Projects, Supporting
Local Business, Uptown
Revitalization and
Engaging Community
Members.
“This event will
have information
for communities,
resources and ways to
to connect with staff from
entities across the state
with available community
resources and grant funds.
This marks the third
year for the Energize
Conference in South
Dakota, with previous
programs hosted in
DeSmet and Lemmon. At
previous conferences,
Thares notes that bringing
community leaders and
business owners together
to share their experiences
and knowledge on a
variety of topics proved
to be powerful with all
groups learning from
each other. “We anticipate
a similar experience in
Milbank May 5 and 6,” he
concludes.

GFP Commission
Continues Nest Predator
Bounty Program For 2020
PIERRE, S.D. – The
South Dakota Game,
Fish and Parks (GFP)
Commission has voted in
favor of conducting a nest
predator bounty program
again in 2020.
At their January
meeting, the commission
was provided a
comprehensive summary
on the 2019 Nest Predator
Bounty Program and
adopted a resolution to
conduct the program again
in 2020. Following a 60-day
public comment period
and a public hearing at
their March meeting, the
commission voted to move
forward with the program.
“The bounty program
has generated a lot of
interest and passionate
discussion,” said Kelly
Hepler, Secretary of
Game, Fish and Parks.
“I am pleased with the
commission’s decision
to move forward with
the program this year
for a number of reasons,
including removing
nest predators from the
landscape and increasing
furbearer license sales. In
addition, the opportunity
to get youth involved
in outdoor activities
is very important to
our department. The
overwhelming support
for the tradition of
trapping and for
removing predators
from the landscape
are opportunities our
department wants to
continue to offer.”
The commission
determined the following
objectives for the 2020
program:
•Remove up to 50,000
nest predators from the
landscape;
•Increase furbearer
license sales by 5 percent;
•Double participation
in the trapping education
program ETHICS SD;
•Ensure 20 percent of
bounty participants are
under the age of 18.
“The nest predator
bounty program has been
a key component of my
Second Century Initiative,
Book 69
which aims to get families
outside together,” said
Governor Kristi Noem.

PIERRE, S.D. – The
South Dakota Department
of Veterans Affairs is now
accepting nominations for
South Dakota’s new “Fallen
Heroes Bridge Dedication”
program. The first South
Dakota state bridge was
dedicated in November of
2019.
South Dakota plans to
dedicate six state bridges
a year in honor of fallen
heroes that died while
serving in combat. More
than 3,000 South Dakotans
have made the ultimate
sacrifice.
“Our fallen heroes are
no longer with us, but
their memory lives on in
the hearts of their loved
ones and our state,” said
Greg Whitlock, Secretary
of the South Dakota
Department of Veterans
Affairs. “Naming our
South Dakota bridges in
honor of our fallen will
give us an opportunity of
remembrance, reflection,
and respect – for honoring
the men and women
five dollars per tail, not to
exceed $250,000 for the
bounty of nest predators.
