Chao has announced the recipients of $225 million in Competitive Highway Bridge Program (CHBP) grant funding. South Dakota was one of 18 states to receive a portion of this funding to make critical upgrades to select bridges in rural areas. The project selected for a $2.2 million award bundled four bridges in Butte, Meade, and Lawrence Counties that are in poor condition and load restricted. All four structures are on County highways serving as connections to local communities that are essential to maintain agriculture business, recreational opportunities, and regional connectivity. The bridges are located in: •Butte County - on Orman Road over Horse Creek constructed in 1930. •Meade County - on Opal Road over Beaver Dam Creek constructed in 1966. •Lawrence County - two structures on St. Onge Road over False Bottom Creek constructed in 1950. “We see a significant benefit to bundling these projects into one contract,” says Secretary of Transportation Darin Bergquist. “By utilizing a similar design and materials for each structure, the counties will save time, money and bring these projects to completion sooner.” Congress funded the CHBP grant program in the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2018, from the U.S. Treasury's General Fund. By law, the funds were restricted to states with population densities of less than 100 people per square-mile based on Census data. Twenty-five states met program qualifications. “This grant continues to move us in the direction of replacing bridges that have reached their useful life and to continue to provide efficient and safe Book 68 transportation options for our state,” says Bergquist. "Partnering with South Dakota to establish a new Veterans cemetery in the eastern half of the state is exactly the kind of project that the Veterans Cemetery Grants Program was made for" said Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs Randy Reeves. "This new cemetery will give tens of thousands of Veterans and their families the peace of mind that comes from knowing they will have a burial option close to home."
